Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The weekend weather was decent in the morning on Saturday, then Mother wind showed up and didn't leave until Monday. Consequently if you didn't make it out Saturday you were sort of out of luck for Sunday fishing in good conditions. The wind seemed to come and go throughout the rest of the week, so timing was essential to getting out and getting bit.

Today, Friday, March 1st is opening day for Rockfish and related species, Whitefish and Sheephead. With today's weather forecast being very good all the schdeduled opening trips have a great opportunity to start the season off on a good footing. We should once again get some Island reports as well.

The Long Beach Halibut Tournament which ends 03-10-13 is still going strong with plenty of 20 to 30 pound Butts being added to the leader board. Halibut fishing in general has been darn good for this time of year all up and down the coast.

The Yellowtail bite showed a uptick this week down south of the border, as the Rockpile yielded some Yellowtail on Wednesday on several ¾ day boats. There was also a single 25 pound Yellowtail caught out of Ensenada over the weekend.

A number of boats ran 1.5 day trips down south of the border to Colonet and other destinations. They all had great trips, with limits of Reds and assorted rockfish, with some great Lingcod fishing adding spice to the cake. Some pictures off the Pacific Voyager 1.5 day trip returning Sunday, 02-24-13:

Just more pretty ladies that fish or not:

Julie humor:

Most colorful fishing fly you have ever seen, try this one?

More fun stuff:

For local fishing out of Dana Wharf Sportfishing the ½ day boat, Sum Fun had 14 anglers catch 3 Sand Bass, 28 Sculpin, 110 Sand Dabs on their Saturday, 02-23-13 trip.

Angler Sergio went fishing Wednesday, 02-27-13, on the Western Pride with friends and they had a great day of fishing:

Sergio fished again Thursday aboard the Western Pride and caught this 10.5 pound Cabezon:

And some Sand Bass:

Out of Pierpoint Landing the ½ day boat Southern Cal has been doing well on the Sand Bass catching 17 Sand Bass, 38 Sculpin and 300 Sand Dab on their trip Saturday, 02-23-13.

Private boater Brandon with a big night Sand Bass out of Long Beach:

In Santa Monica the New Del Mar had a decent day of mixed Bass and Sculpin fishing on Saturday, 02-23-13, catching 3 Sand Bass, 222 Sculpin, 150 Perch and 251 Sand Dab. The ¾ day Spitfire had a good day on Saturday, 02-23-13 with 26 anglers catching 6 Calico Bass, 14 Sand Bass, 130 Sculpin, 30 Perch and 20 Sand Dab.

Nice Bass on his Saturday, 02-23-13 trip on the Spitfire by Jimmy Bass:

I went fishing with private boater John on Saturday, 02-23-13 out of San Pedro. The weather and Calico Bass fishing was sensational for this time of year! Some pictures:

John pulled in another Gopher Cod. We had some nice current and marginal wind of about 2 knots. The meter remained barren for the next 5 minutes, so John set us back up on the few marks we could find. I caught a couple more Calico Bass and John caught a Copper Rockfish and a nice Sculpin.

The bite became a strenuous effort to get a bite. The number of short bites between us was numerous to say the least? We caught a Red, a Johnny Bass, a Copper Rockfish, Sculpin and more Gopher Cod. What happened to the Bass? One of the four Sculpin we caught:

As the morning progressed we found more encouraging marks and a more favorable current and drift direction. John got on the Bass board with back to back Calico Bass. I added a few more Calico Bass to the count and a Sand Bass, one of only two we caught today.

I added a decent sized Sculpin to the count and one of the half dozen Reds we caught:

Private boater Benny fished with a friend on Saturday, 02-23-13 locally and caught this dandy Calico Bass:

Private boater Matt with a nice Sculpin at Palos Verdes over the weekend:

Private boater Dave fished with a friend on Saturday, 02-23-13 locally and caught this dandy Calico Bass:

The Islands

Catalina/Santa Barbara Island!
I have heard rumors of a few home guard Yellowtail making an appearance, will definitely have a report next week, as I plan on spending the weekend at Catalina private boating!

San Clemente Island!
Some private boaters had some decent Calico Bass fishing last weekend, nothing so far this week.

Down South-San Diego and good ole Mexico!
Captain Louie on his boat Its 4 Reel found a solo 25 pound Yellowtail on the Yo Yo Iron over the weekend, Saturday, 02-23-13, and finished the day off with a good score on Reds and Lingcod. Some pictures:

Private boater Robert found the Halibut on the chew Saturday, 2-23-13 landing 23.5 and 19.5 pound fish. Some pictures:

Anglers fishing Wednesday, 02-27-13 off the ¾ day boat San Diego found a school of Yellowtail and caught these three 25 to 35 pound fish on the Yo Yo Iron:

The Blackjact with a good run on the Reds Saturday, 02-23-13:

The weather forecast for Saturday is decent most of the day, while Sunday looks to contain windier conditions. Always check the latest forecast before leaving the dock.
