Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.
There was an explosion of fishing opportunities this week on the exotics. Yellowtail
seemed to be all of a sudden everywhere. Catalina Island
finally broke out with some of the best Yellowtail fishing in years, as counts per boat went as high as 51. Added to that excitement were a number of good counts on the White Seabass
at the Island. The Options and Mardiosa six pack charter boats have caught steady limits of White Seabass to add to their Yellowtail counts this week. Continuing with the surprise this week were reports of Kelp Paddy Yellowtail both inshore and offshore, including US waters. Now that's not happened in May in I don't remember how long, if ever, south of the border yes, yet not north of the border this early?
How about the ½ day boat Southern Cal out of Pierpoint Landing
catching 11 Yellowtail, 50 Calico Bass and 35 Sand Bass for their 17 anglers yesterday, Thursday, 05-24-13. Wow, what a half day trip! The ½ boat Monte Carlo
got in on the action Wednesday, 05-22-13 catching 7 Yellowtail, 33 Calico Bass, 3 Sand Bass, 6 Sheephead, 1 Whitefish and 14 Sculpin.
Tanker White Seabass were again targeted and caught along the coast, while the Channel Islands erupted with large schools of fish up to 67 pounds, with plenty of 50 pound Tankers and several more over 60. The unusual rapid increase in water temps has contributed nicely to these conditions. Halibut fishing has also remained steady all along the coast.
Locally we continue to hope for the Barracuda to arrive in mass, so far the best showing is at Catalina and south of the border. The Calico and Sand Bass fishing has also picked up considerably. What a setup for this Holiday Memorial weekend. So many choices to decide from? Your best bet is to jump on a multiday trip, which allows you to explore several locations and or Islands and improve your chance to catch the right kind. I'm heading out on the Aztec out of Seaforth Landing in Mission Bay for a 2.5 day trip that returns Monday. We are hoping to take advantage of the Kelp Paddy Yellowtail fishing as well as possibly find a school of hungry Bluefin Tuna? So get out and go fishing, the opportunities have not been this good for quite some time.
