Cory Visser, of Long Beach, has been fishing for over 50 years. He has never had a boat of his own but is always there for captains who need a good crew. He is proud that he was once part of a crew that caught a Grand Slam of tuna on a one-day trip.

by Cory VisserThursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.
There were some excellent last chance Rockcod fishing, with big Lingcod, Sheephead, Whitefish and Reds caught. Now the next two months will be spent by most local boats catching Sculpin and Bass, with an occasional Halibut mixed in. There are still a few signs of Yellowtail at Catalina, making this an interesting destination with some school size White Seabass on the prowl.
Of course there is always Mexico to satisfy your craving for a fish taco. Several boats have scheduled 1.5 or longer Freezer Specials this weekend and beyond. For example:
The Chief out of San Diego had an excellent 2.5 day trip over the weekend, south of the border. They managed 147 Lingcod, a Cow Cod and limits of Rockfish, Sheephead and Whitefish.
Both the El Dorado out of Long Beach and the Toronado out of Pierpoint Landing scheduled trips over the weekend fishing the shallow water at San Nicolas Island and Monday and Tuesday with great success:
The El Dorado caught 32 Lingcod on their trip Saturday, 12-28-13 and 52 Lingcod on Monday, 12-30-13:
Some excellent Sheephead fishing as well:
Angler Jimmy fished San Nicolas Island on Monday, 12-30-13 off the Pacific Islander and caught limits of Lingcod, Reds and Sheephead:
Scattered reports of breezing Yellowtail at the Coronado Islands and several weeks ago out of Ensenada, with plenty of Rockfish being caught by the very few anglers fishing the area?

Both the ¾ day boat Freelance and the Pursuit are now concentrating on Calico Bass, Sculpin, Perch, Halibut and Bonito. Occasionally they have caught a stray home guard Yellowtail. The Freelance caught 21 Bonito on their 01-02-14 trip.
Private boater Jonathan fished with his wife and new born Daughter over the weekend on a 2 day trip and again on New Year's Eve. On the weekend they were able to catch all four of their targeted species, Lingcod, Sheephead, White Seabass and a Yellowtail:
They also ran into a school of Bonito:
On Tuesday, they targeted Sheephead and Lingcod, and the trip did not disappoint. Some pictures:
