Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Here today, gone tomorrow is the best explanation for the Yellowtail bite south of the border. The bite shut down completely over the weekend. Then on Monday the ¾ day boat, San Diego managed to catch 23 Yellowtail and followed that up with 75 on their Tuesday, 03-26-13 trip. Then the bite shut down again. Lal and I fished the Rockpile on Wednesday, 03-27-13 and got shut out, seeing only a few fish taken. These fish range in size from 15 to 33 pounds and are being mostly caught on the Yo Yo Iron, with a few caught on the surface iron and on sardines.

The local action continues to be concentrated on catching Rockfish, Reds and big Lingcod, both along the coast and at the Islands. Private boaters targeting the Sand and Calico Bass have found the water temps beginning to rise, allowing for an occasional bite on quality Bass off structure or kelp beds.

Japan Ron fished with private boater Lal on Monday, 03-25-13 and caught his biggest Sand Bass this year at 7.5 pounds:

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The Fred Hall show in Long Beach seemed to keep most anglers on shore. The weekend weather didn't help, as it was breezy on Saturday, then a bit better on Sunday. Considering it rained very hard Thursday and Friday, the majority sat this weekend out.

Scattered Yellowtail reports turned into a good buzz on Tuesday when both the ¾ day boats, San Diego and the Malihini caught decent counts of Yellowtail from 15 to 33 pounds. In fact the San Diego had only 13 anglers catch 33 Tails on Tuesday, that's nearly three a piece, followed by 25 on Wednesday with 40 anglers. Yep, that's great fishing. The Malihini had 15 on Tuesday and 16 Wednesday. Counts were much lower on Thursday. This is typical Yellowtail fishing for this time of year, run and gun style. It's kind of like you having to drop everything and go, or the bite is over and you missed it.

Lal and I did just that. It was my Wednesday to work; however, I just couldn't bare the thought of missing an opportunity for early season Yellowtail. Up at 2:30 am Wednesday, I met Lal at 3:30 am and we were on the water by 5:50 am. Although we did not know it at the time, we didn't need bait, so we picked up half a scoop of Sardines. The fog played havoc with our day, yet we managed to scratch out three Yellowtail from 22.5 to 23.5 pounds. All three were caught on 6X Jr lures, Yo Yo style. The fish spent the majority of their time near the bottom, so surface bait fishing was not an option. It was drift fishing, with a quick stop on the rapidly moving fish, and then run and gun to find more. Some pictures:

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Opening day for Rockfish, Whitefish, Sheephead and Lingcod was a fantastic success. Captains of Sport boats and private boats alike dusted off their gear and scheduled trips after a long period of doing maintenance and waiting it out. The weather for both Friday, opening day, and the weekend contributed to the overall success. There was some wind that came up in the late morning on Sunday, however most of the week it was fishable. And fish everybody did.

The Fred Hall Show was quite popular on their opening day, Wednesday, 03-06-13. I worked the AllCoast booth with Captain Dav, Marli and Japan Ron. The turnout was much larger than last year. I wll return to the booth on closing day, Sunday, 03-10-13. Hope to see you there, and with rain the last few days and forecasts of winds on Saturday, it makes sense to plan a day at the show this weekend.

The new fishing regulations for the three species of Bass kicked in on 03-01-13. Calico, Sand and Bay Bass are now a combined total limit of five, and each Bass must be at least 14 inches in size. Theoretically Bass begin to spawn at around 12 inches, and this gives them an added two years to breed. Also who really needs to take home a 12 inch Bass for dinner, not much meat there?

The last three years of fishing the annual spawning run that occurs all up and down the coast, yet primarily on the Huntington Flats regions has shown a significant decline in the catch ratio. Since I fish Bass year round and practice catch and release, I am thrilled about the new rules.

The Long Beach Halibut Tournament which ends 03-10-13 is still going strong with plenty of 20 to 30 pound Butts being added to the leader board. Halibut fishing in general has been darn good for this time of year all up and down the coast.

Other than Rockfish, the Islands remained very quiet this week. There was a lot of coverage; however the chilly 55 to 56 degree water kept the exotics at bay. The full moon made the squid hunt more difficult as well. At least it was great to finally see some reports from these areas.

The Yellowtail are teasing everyone down south of the border, as the Rockpile and the Coronado Islands yielded Yellowtail on several occasions over the weekend and throughout the week on the ¾ day boat, San Diego. There were also several 25-30 pound Yellowtail caught out of San Quintin over the weekend. I did not hear of any Yellowtail caught in Ensenada, nor did they bite on the multi day trips to Colonet.

A number of boats ran 1.5 day trips down south of the border to Colonet and other destinations. They all had great trips, with limits of Reds and assorted rockfish, with some great Lingcod fishing adding spice to the cake. Some pictures off the Voyager 2.5 day trip returning Thursday, 03-07-13:

Captain Jaime of Seasons Sportfishing took their new 34' Parker out for a shakedown run to Catalina, Saturday, 03-02-13, with reliable anglers Bill and Roxy. The fishing was slow, but the afternoon produced some good counts on the Reds.

I went fishing with private boater John on Friday evening, fishing Saturday, 03-02-13 and Sunday, 03-03-13. We left out of San Pedro. The weather was sensational on Saturday, yet the fishing was very slow! We caught nearly a limit of Rockfish at the West end on Saturday. Friday night making squid was a lot of effort, but we managed over 150 pieces. The entire close in kelp areas yielded nothing, up and down the Island. We were hoping for a bite on the home guard Yellowtail, yet none developed. We woke up to a stiff breeze on Sunday at the Isthmus. Tried to return to the west end to catch a few more fish tacos, and found only white caps in our way. Settled for 7 Calico Bass and a dozen Rockfish fishing plastics along the Palo Verdes coast, all fish released to fight another day.

San Clemente Island!
The Freedom out of 22nd St. Landing had a super day of fishing on Monday, 03-04-13, catching 86 Sheephead, 131 Whitefish, 12 Bocaccio, 162 Rockfish, 3 Lingcod, 6 Sculpin and 102 Red Snapper.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The weekend weather was decent in the morning on Saturday, then Mother wind showed up and didn't leave until Monday. Consequently if you didn't make it out Saturday you were sort of out of luck for Sunday fishing in good conditions. The wind seemed to come and go throughout the rest of the week, so timing was essential to getting out and getting bit.

Today, Friday, March 1st is opening day for Rockfish and related species, Whitefish and Sheephead. With today's weather forecast being very good all the schdeduled opening trips have a great opportunity to start the season off on a good footing. We should once again get some Island reports as well.

The Long Beach Halibut Tournament which ends 03-10-13 is still going strong with plenty of 20 to 30 pound Butts being added to the leader board. Halibut fishing in general has been darn good for this time of year all up and down the coast.

The Yellowtail bite showed a uptick this week down south of the border, as the Rockpile yielded some Yellowtail on Wednesday on several ¾ day boats. There was also a single 25 pound Yellowtail caught out of Ensenada over the weekend.

A number of boats ran 1.5 day trips down south of the border to Colonet and other destinations. They all had great trips, with limits of Reds and assorted rockfish, with some great Lingcod fishing adding spice to the cake. I went fishing with private boater John on Saturday, 02-23-13 out of San Pedro. The weather and Calico Bass fishing was sensational for this time of year! Some pictures:

John pulled in another Gopher Cod. We had some nice current and marginal wind of about 2 knots. The meter remained barren for the next 5 minutes, so John set us back up on the few marks we could find. I caught a couple more Calico Bass and John caught a Copper Rockfish and a nice Sculpin.

The bite became a strenuous effort to get a bite. The number of short bites between us was numerous to say the least? We caught a Red, a Johnny Bass, a Copper Rockfish, Sculpin and more Gopher Cod. What happened to the Bass? One of the four Sculpin we caught:

As the morning progressed we found more encouraging marks and a more favorable current and drift direction. John got on the Bass board with back to back Calico Bass. I added a few more Calico Bass to the count and a Sand Bass, one of only two we caught today.

I added a decent sized Sculpin to the count and one of the half dozen Reds we caught:

Private boater Benny fished with a friend on Saturday, 02-23-13 locally and caught this dandy Calico Bass:

The Islands

Catalina/Santa Barbara Island!
I have heard rumors of a few home guard Yellowtail making an appearance, will definitely have a report next week, as I plan on spending the weekend at Catalina private boating!
