Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The Del Mar portion of the annual Fred Hall show opened this week and runs through the weekend. Considering the wind is slated to blow all the way into next week, might as well spend a day at the show? Although smaller than the Long Beach show, there are some different vendors attending, and plenty of bargains on terminal tackle.

Just after we witnessed the water temps rising to as high as 64, the recent cold weather and recent storm blew that up. The improved local and Island Bass bite will most likely be placed on hold until we gain better weather conditions? More reports of good Halibut being caught this week, primarily due to the recent grunion runs.

The excellent fishing for both local and Island Rockfish, Lingcod, big Reds, Whitefish and Sheephead should continue as long as the wind and rough seas allow you to fish. Might be awhile before we see calm seas again?

The Coronado Islands Yellowtail bite shut down for a few days, then re-appeared on Tuesday. All the ¾ day boats getting in on the action with moderate counts and light loads of anglers. 15 on the Mission Belle for 9 anglers, 25 on the Malahini for 16 anglers, and 27 on the San Diego for 16 anglers. Some pictures:

I fished with private boater Lal on the Rubber Ducky Sunday, 03-23-14. Fishing for Bass was extremely slow, although I started the day out on the right foot with this 4.75 pound Sand Bass, things deteriorated from there.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The water temps are rising quickly, 64+ at the islands and locally. Consequently both the local and Island Bass bite has improved, with some good sized Halibut being caught. Excellent fishing for both local and Island Rockfish, Lingcod, big Reds, Whitefish and Sheephead.

The Coronado Islands Yellowtail bite remained steady over the weekend and peaked on Wednesday. All the ¾ day boats getting in on the action with counts as high as 64 on the Mission Belle, 49 on the Malihini and 74 on the San Diego for 27 anglers on Wednesday,03-19-14! Some pictures:

Tuesday, the 18th:

They caught 74 on their Wed. trip, here is a picture of angler John and friend with their catch:

Another happy angler on the San Diego:

The Yellowtail bite slowed in Ensenada, as water temps were said to very between 59 and 61, dropping from earlier levels of 62 to 64. Yet there is still good fishing as far south as San Quintin, with the Yellowtail mostly being caught on the Yo Yo iron style of fishing or by trolling Rapalas.

The majority of the local boats continue targeting Rockfish and Lingcod, with good results, then looking for local action on both Calico and Sand Bass, while Halibut fishing also remained upbeat.

Most private boaters found improved fishing on both species of Bass, with some great size on the local and Island Calico Bass fishery.

Pretty ladies who fish or maybe not:

I fished Saturday and again Wednesday with private boater Dave and friends. We slammed the Reds on Saturday, catching over 35, with one 10-12 pound Lingcod and plenty of other assorted Rockfish. A little slower on the Reds Wednesday, 03-19-14, with 21 Reds, a dozen Coppers, a dozen Whitefish and more Bocaccio than you can count, most released.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The much anticipated annual Fred Hall show opened a week ago Wednesday. Most reports indicated the show drew decent crowds, however with fewer exhibitors this year? Not sure why, as for most of the year the economy has been improving? Generally it was considered another good show with average attendance. There was not an abundance of break through deals, yet plenty of discounts were offered on terminal tackle as well as Rods and Reels, etc. There appeared to be a much larger display of boats on hand.

If you missed the Long Beach Show, the Del Mar show starts up next week, although it is usually much smaller in size.

The Coronado Islands Yellowtail bite exploded over the weekend and into early this week. All the ¾ day boats getting in on the action with counts as high as 58 on the Mission Belle, 111 on the Malihini and 80 on the San Diego, full limits for 16 anglers on Monday,03-10-14! The Yellowtail continue to put on a good show in Ensenada and as far south as San Quintin, with the Yellowtail mostly being caught on the Yo Yo iron style of fishing.

The majority of the local 1/2 day and 3/4 day boats are now targeting Rockfish and Lingcod, with good results, then looking for local action on both Calico and Sand Bass, while Halibut fishing also remained upbeat.

Most private boaters found improved fishing on both species of Bass, with some great size on the local and Island Calico Bass fishery. For example Lal and friend Mark fished on Friday along the Palos Verde Coast for some excellent Calico Bass fishing, then headed toward Izor's Reef on Sunday and got into a wide open bite on the Sand Bass, releasing some 52 combined Bass to 5 pounds.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Well most of us survived the well needed storm over the weekend. Rain, large swells and wind unsettled the ocean, however, water temps were not too overly affected. Consequently all opening day Rockfish trips were cancelled over the weekend, a tough blow to the hungry Sportfishing fleet. Nevertheless those capable of fishing mid-week made the most of it with some great trips. This weekend should provide some opportunities to those that missed out on opening day, although the weather forecast for Saturday is less than ideal.

The much anticipated annual Fred Hall Show opened on Wednesday. Most reports indicated decent crowds with far fewer exhibitors this year? Not sure why as for the most part the economy has been improving?

The Coronado Islands on again, off again Yellowtail bite was still on hold, with the ¾ day boat San Diego catching 3 Yellowtail on their Wednesday trip and none on Thursday's trip. No other boats are running this week.

Both in Ensenada and way down south in San Quintin, the usual Charter Masters found the Yellowtail on the chew just before the storm, mostly being caught on the Yo Yo iron style of fishing. Captain Kelly reported that today, Friday one boat reported a wide open bite on the Yellowtail, so the storm did not chase them away!

With most boats now targeting Rockfish and Lingcod, the recent improvement in local action for Bass fishing was put on hold, while Halibut fishing remained upbeat. Local action on Sheephead and Whitefish also showed good signs.

There were no reports from private boaters this week on the Bonito bite at Catalina and no sport boats running to Catalina found them, concentrating on Rockfish.

Most private boaters stayed on shore this week or went to the Fred Hall show. It was the first time in 20 years I have missed opening day at the show. I am still recovering from a bad fall and torn Quad muscle. Hope to hobble there on Sunday?

my favorite actress - Elizabeth Taylor;
my favorite singer - Whitney Houston,

I just wanted you to know that my favorite politicians are - Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barbra Boxer, Diane Feinstein & Eric Holder.
