Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Despite very calm seas both Saturday and Sunday the weather was very odd. A deep marine layer kept Father Sun, mostly in hiding, however, water temps did rise considerably, providing increased optimism for improved fishing. We hope soon to arrive, those feisty toothy critters known as Barracuda and maybe those fun to catch Bonito. Rising water temps point to better Bass fishing, a White Seabass bite along the coast and at the Islands, as well as more hard fighting Yellowtail arriving locally.

The Yellowtail bite slowed down over the weekend with a lot of boat pressure in La Jolla. The ¾ day boat San Diego had their best day of fishing for the week on Monday with five Yellowtail. These fish are running big, almost all over 20 pounds up to 40 pounds. Some pictures from trips over the weekend during the week:

Angler Greg on his Saturday, 04-21-12 trip on the San Diego trip, a 22 pound Yellowtail:

Ian with a 25+ pound Yellowtail caught on their Wednesday, 04-25-12 trip:

The Constitution ran a 1.5 day trip over the weekend. They had excellent weather, however, it was not easy style limits per usual, they had to work for their fish. Some pictures courtesy of Harry'O:

Not often a Red takes the Jackpot over a Lingcod:

The Freedom fished San Nicolas Island on Sunday, 04-22-12 and slammed the Lingcod, catching 67:

Local fishing remains excellent on Rockfishing, with more nice Lingcod being caught. The only decent fishing for Bass is in the evenings on the Twilight runs.

Twilight fishing: The Native Sun fished on Saturday, April 21, 2012, and caught 89 Sand Bass and 13 Sculpin. The Freelance out of Davey's Locker ran a twilight trip on Monday, 04-23-12, catching1 Calico Bass, 10 Sand Bass, 5 Rockfish and 72 Sculpin.

In Santa Monica Bay
The ¾ day Tradition has been running trips all week, with very light loads and are regularly catching limits on both Rockfish and Sculpin. On their trip on Sunday, 04-22-12 the fishing was excellent, they caught limits of both Rockfish and Sculpin with lots of Big Reds. Some pictures courtesy of Jackpot Jimmy:

San Clemente Island!A 25 pound Halibut caught at the Island on a Black Pearl 2-day Kayak trip over the weekend.

I fished with Dave on the private boat "Hooked" on Saturday at the Island with friends Kevin, Bob and Jeff. We loved the calm seas; however, the deep marine layer made it a chilly experience. Fishing was good, yet we had to work for our limits. We did catch a number of big Reds, a Lingcod, and lots of those extinct Bocaccio, and some really nice size Santa Marias and Green Spots. A couple of pictures:

Dave also fished on Tuesday, 04-24-12 and caught four Lingcod to 18 pounds, with a bunch of big Reds:

The Thunderbird ran to the Island on Saturday, 04-21-12 and caught 11 Sheephead, 39 Whitefish, 38 Bocaccio, 70 Rockfish, 13 Sculpin and 82 Red Snapper.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Ok the storm on Saturday kept almost everyone off the water, with only a few anglers fishing on Sunday. Good weather all week provided great opportunities for better fishing, although few private boaters have taken advantage of it. Most of those who did were rewarded.

The Yellowtail began biting in La Jolla last week, and on Monday the fleet caught ten Yellowtail, with the ¾ day boat San Diego catching six. They caught another seven on Tuesday, 04-17-12 and 15 more on Wednesday to 34 pounds.

Angler Odium fished on the San Diego on Thursday, 04-19-12 with friend Brian and both caught Yellowtail. Brian with his:

Odium with his Tail:

Ryan with a big Yellowtail:

Private boater Brando got in on the La Jolla Yellowtail action Wednesday, 04-18-12 with a friend:

Private boater Jeff on his boat "Ready to Assemble" returned to Catalina Island on Saturday evening, in rough seas, where I, crew Jonathan and George joined Jeff. We stopped at the Isthmus to look for Squid with only 50 pieces to show for our 6 hour effort in a continuous rock and roll environment. The seas finally settled down Sunday morning after sunrise. According to Jeff the water temps were unaffected by the Storm, and water clarity remained similar to his last trip. However, the Yellowtail had lockjaw. We did see boiling fish, and several seals were happy campers throwing a fresh caught Yellowtail up in the air and slapping them down, while the Birds when nuts eating the scraps.

Due to the storm all 1.5-day or longer trips over the weekend were cancelled. However, the Aztec ran a charter trip on Monday, 04-16-12 and returned with limits of Reds and Rockfish, including 11 fat Lingcod.

The Pacific Star ran a 2-day trip to the Islands returning Tuesday, 04-17-12 with limits of Rockfish, 3 Halibut and 40 Lingcod. Some pictures:

Local fishing remains excellent on Rockfishing, with more nice Lingcod being caught. The warmer days this week should help in reducing the cold dirty water along the coast. There were some decent evenings of Bass fishing on the Twilight runs.

Twilight fishing: The Native Sun fished on Sunday, April 15, 2012, and caught 73 Sand Bass and 13 Sculpin.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Wow, with excellent weather on Saturday and Sunday, it was game on. Yep, it was breezy in the afternoon, so you had to get the job done in the morning, many did.

Private boater Jeff set the early standard for great fishing at Catalina Island last weekend. He found the home guard Yellowtail on the chew Saturday, 04-07-12. Fishing solo, as he had a last minute cancellation from his crew. Jeff caught two Yellowtail weighing 20 pounds, and a 15 pound Tail to wrap up the day's catch early morning:

Not wanting to let an opportunity go to waste, Captain Jeff headed back to the Island on Sunday, and slammed the Yellowtail, again fishing solo, landing six Yellowtail to 30 pounds, out of nine hook ups. Wow Jeff, that's outstanding!

The Pacific Voyager ran a 1.5-day trip over the weekend and slammed the Reds, Lingcod, and Rockfish.

The Freedom out of 22nd St. Landing ran a trip Sunday, 04-08-12 to San Nicolas Island. According to angler Odium the fishing was excellent. Some pictures:

The reports from the ¾ and ½ day Sport Boats locally remain excellent on Rockfishing, with some nice Lingcod included in this weeks count. The cold dirty water along the coast continued, so the Bass fishing remains slow.

Twilight fishing: The Freelance out of Davey's Locker ran a twilight trip on Sunday, 04-08-12 and caught lots of Sculpin to go with a few Rockfish and Sand Dabs. The Native Sun fished twilight trips both Saturday, April 07, 2012 and Sunday, April 08, 2012, as angler Loker and friends found the Sand Bass on the chew. Some pictures courtesy of the Loker:

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

With decent weather forecasted on Saturday, 03-30-12, followed by a storm front on Sunday, which arrived as scheduled, everyone scrambled to get out on Saturday and scratch their fishing itch.

I left Friday evening on the Aztec for a 1.5 day trip down the coast of Baja, one of three boats that ventured down as far as Colonet. The Pacific Voyager and Voyager were the other boats in the area. Captain Mikey on the Aztec knew that a good trip required a good morning of fishing as the winds leading the storm front were scheduled to arrive by noon. Fortunately the winds held off until 2pm, which provided ample time to get the job done. Due to a ripping current and constantly changing condition, the morning bite was a slow pick. You had to work hard at it, yet those that had experience finished with limits of Reds, assorted other Rockfish, and a few nice Lingcod each. A couple of pictures:

After the Voyager limited out on Rockfish on Saturday on the first of a 2-day trip, they fished the shallows on Sunday. Jackpot was this 15 pound Sheephead:

Since opening day of the Rockfish season, March 1st, most everyone has been targeting Reds and Lingcod, with Bass fishing very slow due to cold and dirty water. For the most part it has been an excellent month of Rockfishing in between storms. Occasionally being targeted are Halibut, and there have been some dandy catches on these tasty fish.

Twilight fishing: The Slammer out of Redondo Sportfishing ran a trip on Saturday, 3-31-12, with 3 anglers catching 20 Sand Bass. Both the Freelance and Western Pride out of Davey's Locker ran twilight trips on Saturday, 3-31-12, and both had excellent Sculpin fishing to go along with some Sand Bass and assorted Rockfish.

The ½ day boat New Del Mar caught 78 Rockfish and 110 Sculpin on their Tuesday, 04-03-12 trip.

Private boater Ron took his new boat with friends out to the Long Beach Wall, Wednesday, 04-04-12 evening and found some Calico Bass on the chew:

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The decent weather on Saturday, 03-24-12 allowed a number of anglers to get in some fishing prior to the storm on Sunday and high winds on Monday.
The reports from the ¾ and ½ day Sport Boats locally contained many successful stories, although Rockfishing is still the name of the game right now. The recent storms have maintained the cold dirty water along the coast, which has put a damper on the Bass fishing.
Twilight fishing: Native Sun pictures from Friday night, 03-23-12:
