Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

What a difference a change of weather and conditions can make. While we have had primarily a deep marine layer off the coast most of the week, calm seas have led to a magical increase in water temps. Earlier in the spring when water temps rise above 60 degrees, the fish seem to stir, their appetites improve and they forage more aggressively. This week there areas where the water temps rose to as high as 61.9 degrees. What a difference that makes to a bite.

Private boating locally saw both the Calico and Sand Bass turn on. Also there was a better bite on the Halibut. Still, most of the Sport Boats primarily are concentrating on catching Rockfish, Reds and big Lingcod. A few Twilight trips have yielded good scores on Bass.

It seems the on again, off again Yellowtail bite south of the border, is on again. One day the boats catch 15 to 20 Yellowtail, then virtually nothing? Well those 21 anglers who took a chance on Thursday on the ¾ day boat San Diego got into a late afternoon bite, landing 72 Yellowtail. It appears you have to spend some time on the water to get in on the right day, when the fish bite. These fish were primarily caught on fly lined sardines, a change in tactics to boot.

Based on the encouraging news of the arrival of big schools of Barracuda in Ensenada over the prior weekend, combined with some scattered reports of Yellowtail, I headed down that way with good friend Bill on his boat out of his slip in Las Salinas. Wednesday, 04-24-13 seemed to be a down day across the board, as we struck out on the both Barracuda and Yellowtail. We did find the bottom critters on the chew, catching lots of Lingcod, Reds, Coppers and assorted other Rockfish. Some pictures:

On Thursday the Yellowtail returned?

The GameFisher found the Yellowtail hungry on Thursday, 04-25-13, catching seven on the Troll:

There was a stirring of life at San Clemente Island as the Freedom found some Yellowtail on their Wednesday trip. The Thunderbird caught three Yellowtail on their Sunday trip. We are still waiting for the White Sea Bass to show up at the Islands.

I fished with private boater Lal on Sunday, 04-21-13 out of Long Beach. We found the Sand Bass on the chew on the local reefs, catching and releasing 33 Sand Bass to 3.5 pounds. Some pictures:

Private boater Japan Ron also fished with Lal on Wednesday, 04-24-13. They fished a little further south in the Newport Beach area. Both the Calico and Sand Bass were hungry, as they caught and released 25 of each. Their biggest Calico Bass reached seven pounds and their biggest Sand Bass was five pounds. Some pictures:

The Islands

Catalina/Santa Barbara Island!

The Pursuit out of 22nd Street Landing in San Pedro found Catalina to yield a good count on a variety of Rockfish and other species on their weekend trips.

The Freelance fishing the Island, Wednesday, 04-25-13 and Thursday:

San Clemente Island!

The Yellowtail bite on the Freedom has picked up, and the Tails are big, they caught 8 on Tuesday, 04-24-13:

The Thunderbird out of Davey's Locker has been running to the Island frequently and slamming the Rockfish, Reds and Lingcod.

Down South-San Diego and good ole Mexico!

Charter Master Duane for Seasons Sportfishing found the Yellowtail on the chew over the weekend, 04-20-13 at the Coronado Islands and south. They finished the day catching some good bottom critters:

Angler Bryan with Yellowtail caught off the San Diego, Thursday, 04-25-13:

Angler Eddie with the lone 30 pound Yellowtail caught on their Wednesday trip on the San Diego:

Angler Scott had a successful trip on the Malihini, Tuesday, 04-23-13:

All comments and suggestions welcomed!

Weather
The weather forecast for both Saturday and Sunday looks to be a bit breezy, yet still fishable.

Always check the latest forecast before leaving the dock.
