Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Weekend fishing for Offshore Yellowtail continued with limits being the rule on most 1.5 day trips or longer. A hand full of Bluefin Tuna added to the spice of each trip, with Tuna over 100 pounds. White Seabass and huge Halibut are being caught at the Channel Islands on a regular basis.

On any given day there have been excellent counts of Yellowtail being caught at Catalina, primarily on the front side of the Island. Private boaters, six pack charters and a few full day boats have found a school of White Seabass willing to bite on occasion. The Calico Bass fishing is outstanding at the Island, and a good mix of Barracuda is being found as well.

San Clemente has at times yielded counts exceeding those at Catalina for both White Seabass and Yellowtail to over 40 pounds, except the Yellowtail are the bigger brutes in smaller quantities than the school size 10 to 12 pounders being caught at Catalina.

Locally the Barracuda have played hide and seek for the ½ day and ¾ day boats. A few local Yellowtail are still being caught in the Horseshoe Kelp area. Sand Bass Junction has been very plentiful of late, with many limits being taken, and many more Sand Bass being released less than 14 inches in size.

Most of the better counts on Bluefin Tuna to over 100 pounds remain some 175 miles south of Point Loma, although Tuna have been caught as close as 60 miles, the 20 to 30 pounders which bite better on light tackle!

Here is a nice Bluefin off the Condor over the weekend; they also caught limits of Yellowtail to 28 pounds:

The Enterprise did catch 29 Barracuda on yesterday's ¾ day run, Wednesday, 06-19-13. They had fun fishing for Calico Bass, releasing over 130 and 24 Sand Bass, keeping only a few due to size limits.

The Yellowtail fishing at the Coronado Islands has improved lately, as on Wednesday the Malihini caught 37 with 21 Barracuda. The San Diego added 23 Tails and the Mission Belle 17 Tails.

Coastal Tanker White Seabass fishing picked up some this week, also the schoolies keep us encouraged for better action to come. An occasional large Yellowtail have been caught mixed in with the WSB. The prime reason the WSB bite improved is the arrival of live squid in key areas.

Private boater Tim fished with friend Barry and caught this 52 pound Coastal Tanker, Tuesday, 06-18-13:

Tim also added a Yellowtail:

Angler Vick, who owns the world record for White Seabass of 66 pounds caught on eight pound test line, catches a 50 pounder Tuesday, 06-18-13 on the same test line:

The Halibut bite remains impressive for those few that fish for them. The Sport Boats have found a more frequent healthy bite on both Calico and Sand Bass. Twilight trips are being scheduled more frequently, with some night time fishing for Barracuda to go with both Sand and Calico Bass.

The Islands

Catalina/Santa Barbara Island!

I fished Catalina on Sat.-06-15-13 with private boater Jeff. We arrived at the Island just after dark and soon found an enormous school of squid and got them to float. We stuffed boat bait tanks and a cooler for chum. We both got a decent night of sleep, and I awoke at 4am and checked our outfits to find them in total disarray. We re-rigged and began fishing. At 6am Jeff caught a 30 pound White Seabass and I hooked one, only to lose it to a huge seal. Conditions were definitely not favorable and four hours later had nothing further to show for our efforts. Made a number of moves before Jeff added a nice 35 pound White Seabass to the count. Both the Calico Bass and Barracuda were off the chew today, releasing a half dozen of each. Some pictures:

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Offshore Yellowtail fishing below the border continues to be excellent with limits the rule. Most of these trips are 1.5 day or longer, which allows for dawn to dusk fishing. Then after finding limits of Yellowtail, they can search for the Bluefin Tuna. The schools of Bluefin are few and far between and early in the year are on a finicky bite pattern. Everyone needs to bring 40 and 50 pound on their trips as these fish have up to and over 100 pounds, and are averaging 40 to 60 pounds.

Limits of White Seabass at the Channel Islands were not a common occurrence this week; however, there were some good catches. For example the Mirage had limits of White Seabass on their Wed., 06-12-13 trip. Big Halibut are hanging out with the Seabass and the fish are being up caught to 50 pounds.

Locally the Barracuda have been hit and miss and are certainly negatively affected by boat pressure, with some counts up to 70 for the ½ day and ¾ day boats. An occasional local Yellowtail bite has been on both at the Horseshoe Kelp and just outside the Long Beach Harbor from 1 mile to the 6 mile green buoy. Look for working birds and be sure to bring live squid.

The annual migration of Sand Bass has begun, as the ¾ day boat Patriot caught both limits of Sand Bass and Sculpin on yesterday's trip, Thursday, 06-13-13. The Enterprise caught over 100 Sand Bass and 100 Sculpin on yesterday's ¾ day run.

The Yellowtail bite at Catalina over the weekend and during the week has been good with counts on the Pursuit over 50 Yellowtail. If you're in the right place at the right time, the White Seabass are biting. The Island has been yielding some huge Halibut on the squid grounds and on some of the beaches on both sides of the Island.

San Clemente Island has had some great fishing for both Yellowtail and White Seabass this week.

The Coronado Islands have yielded very inconsistent counts of none, 1 and 10 to 30 on the Yellowtail throughout the week. The last few days the bite has been off.

I did not see any reports on the Coastal Tanker White Seabass biting this week. I'm sure this fishing will make another appearance soon. Erratic water temperatures could be the cause?

La Jolla had a quick break out for Yellowtail last week, then the counts quickly faded when lots of boat pressure was applied.

More and more Twilight trips are being scheduled, with some night time fishing for Barracuda to go with both excellent Sand and Calico Bass fishing

The Bluefin Tuna are getting closer. Here is a nice Bluefin off the Pacific Voyager over the weekend:

The Islands

Catalina/Santa Barbara Island!

I fished Catalina on Sat.-06-08-13 with private boater Lal. We caught lots of nice Calico Bass, a decent size Sheephead and a few other critters, but no exotics. Got a call from new friend Jeff who found the White Seabass on his trip with his girlfriend on Mon-06-10-13 and said let's go get some more. I was all in! Figuring I just had to break out of my slump at Catalina this day would be the ticket. Holy Moses it was a day to remember, probably top five all time, certainly my best ever at any Island! I caught 27 and 30 pound Halibut, released a 100 pound Black Seabass, I also caught a 25 pound White Seabass, the Ghost, curse over, and two 12 pound Yellowtail. Jeff caught a White Seabass and a Yellowtail. We also released over 40 Calico Bass and 20 Barracuda. Some pictures:

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Weekend fishing for Offshore Yellowtail was excellent when you found the Magic Kelp, as the Tribute did out of Seaforth Landing, with 30 anglers catching 150 Yellowtail on its 1.5 day trip. Limits of White Seabass at the Channel Islands were not the rule, with lots of boat pressure; however, during the week there were some very good counts. Locally the Barracuda have arrived, yet they have also been negatively affected by boat pressure, with counts mostly under 30 for the ½ day and ¾ day boats. A few local Yellowtail are being caught in the Horseshoe Kelp area.

Other exciting offshore news was received from the Shogun on their 8 day trip. They found Bluefin Tuna to over 100 pounds some 175 miles south of Point Loma. There is a good patch of favorable water out there, which will allow for the Tuna to make their way further north, hopefully soon!

The Enterprise did catch 71 Barracuda on yesterday's ¾ day run. Sand Bass fishing locally is also picking up.

The Yellowtail bit at Catalina over the weekend and during the week, however, for the most part, the White Seabass pulled a no show. The Coronado Islands have yielded consistent counts of 10 to 30 on the Yellowtail throughout the week. I went fishing with new friend Jeff and we managed to catch a few Yellowtail on Wednesday, 06-05-13 at South Kelp Ridge, below the Coronado Islands. A couple of pictures:

The prospects for near shore Kelp Paddy Yellowtail remained disappointing this week. Coastal Tanker White Seabass and some schoolies keep us encouraged for better action to come.

La Jolla had a quick break out for Yellowtail over the weekend, as the New Seaforth caught 48 Yellowtail on their half day run Sunday. The counts quickly faded when lots of boat pressure was applied.

The Halibut bite remains impressive for those few that fish for them. The Sport Boats have found a more frequent healthy bite on both Calico and Sand Bass. Twilight trips are being scheduled more frequently, with some night time fishing for Barracuda to go with both Sand and Calico Bass.

Private boater Eric fished with friend Jay for some local Tankers, Sunday 06-02-13. The big boys didn't show, however they both caught nice school sized White Seabass to 22 pounds:

Twilight fishing awesome off the Native Sun from angler Sergio, Sunday, 06-02-13:
