Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

It was another weekend of disappointing Tuna fishing? I'm not sure of what the problem was, nor were all the accomplished Captains out there coming up with any explanations? Wind, drop in water temps, plus an early season that showed way too much, too early? Yet as the week progressed, the Tuna fishing seemed to improve, with some exciting counts on both Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna. Several boats had mixed Tuna counts from 60 to 75. The Bluefin Tuna are running big with fish to 100 pounds and the Yellowfin Tuna have been as big as 55 pounds, quite surprising to have Yellowfin running this big this far north. So be sure to bring some 40 to 50 pound outfits.

Bait remains a problem, with few Sardines being located. Making Mackerel before heading for the Tuna grounds has proved rewarding, especially for hooking the big boys on heavy tackle. Throwing out an Anchovy with 25 pound test line is suicide when a 50 pound or bigger Tuna decides to bite!

A steady pick at the Islands, as fishing for Yellowtail and White Seabass continues, as both the Channel Islands and San Clemente have kicked out good counts on both species lately. Good fishing for Huge Halibut adds to the excitement. Catalina fishing for Yellowtail picked up a little bit with an occasional White Seabass in the mix. Calico Bass fishing has also improved.

The best Barracuda fishing locally out of Long Beach and San Pedro has been in the afternoon. The ½ day boats PM runs have far out produced the AM runs. Counts exceeding 100 Barracuda have been common in the afternoon? Also the Twilight trips have picked up some nice Barracuda to go with the excellent night Bass bite. Santa Monica has also seen some excellent runs on the Barracuda recently. A nice school of Barracuda also showed up in Dana Point this week.

Daytime Bass fishing has also improved, with some nice pockets of Calico Bass to go with theSand Bass. The fish are getting ready to spawn and are loaded with eggs. The annual spawn should begin soon, as water temps as high as 70 degrees provides ideal conditions for spawning.

Fishing for Yellowtail at the Coronado Island remained steady during the week with counts as high as 27 on the Mission Belle, Thursday, 06-26-14, and the San Diego produced 20 Yellowtail with scattered counts of Barracuda, making for a fun day of fishing.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The full moon had an adverse effect on the weekend Tuna fishing and the lack of counts forced many boats to cancel plans during the week due to lack of passengers. Neither the Yellowfin nor the Bluefin Tuna put in an appearance, even for trips as long as three days. The great early start to the offshore season has now sort of fizzled? The Yellowtail still seem to be plentiful when the right kelp paddy can be found, although too many have very small fish on them. The Condor on a 1.5 day trip fishing Thursday and returning this morning caught 30 Yellowfin Tuna. Not sure what has happened to the Bluefin, yet it remains mind boggling that the Yellowfin are biting this early in the year?

Island fishing for Yellowtail and White Seabass remains promising, as the Channel Islands have kicked out good counts on both species lately. Throw in some Huge Halibut and some trips are just sensational. Catalina fishing for Yellowtail and White Seabass has been hit and miss. No wide open bites lately, but the six pack charters have done well on both while the Pursuit and Sport King have found some Yellowtail on the chew on a daily basis.

More and more Barracuda are being caught locally out of Long Beach and San Pedro, and continue to be caught in San Diego and at the Channel Islands. Finally Santa Monica Bay got into the action. For example the ¾ day boat Spitfire caught 100 Barracuda and the ½ boat New Del Mar put 225 on the deck! Out of Long Beach the ¾ day boat Enterprise caught 142 Barracuda and out of San Pedro the ½ day boat Monte Carlo caught 82 Barracuda. It should be an exciting weekend.

Fishing for Yellowtail at the Coronado Islands and/or Rock Pile remained steady during the week with counts as high as 27 on the Malihini, Thursday, 06-19-14, and they also caught 128 Barracuda, making it a very decent day.

This is just two of the big Yellowtail caught off the Malahini out of 11 Yellowtail and lots of Barracuda on their Sunday trip.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The big Bluefin Tuna were very moody this week, lots of show and very little go. Those that dropped down in line size usually paying the price of screaming drags and broken lines. There are simply too many fish from 70 to over 100 pounds which have no mercy when hooked on anything less than 40 pound test line?

Captains were seeing some schools of smaller Bluefin, however, they were even more line skittish, both boat and line shy!

There were a few decent counts on the Yellowfin Tuna from 10 to 25 pounds, and the size of the Yellowtail improved somewhat. Previously they are mostly Rats!

Yellowtail fishing at Catalina is hot one day and slow the next, while the White Seabass perform similarly. Limit style fishing for White Seabass has been the case most of the week at the Channel Islands, with a good mix of big boys, along with school size fish. Huge Halibut are being caught at the Islands on a very consistent basis.

There were some good counts of local Barracuda fishing during the week out of Long Beach and San Pedro. They are still being caught in San Diego and at the Channel Islands, only a few have shown up from Newport Beach to Santa Monica Bay locally.

The Coronado Island fishing for Yellowtail picked up again with calmer seas. Lots of fish are being seen, and in many cases this week they went on the chew, as scores ranged from 40 to over 100 per boat Tuesday.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Mother wind stepped up to put a damper on the Tuna party all weekend and most of the week, as a number of trips were even cancelled during the week because of high seas and wind. Very few Bluefin Tuna were caught as a result and only a few decent counts on the Yellowfin Tuna from 10 to 25 pounds, mostly 10 to 15 pounders. The large counts of Yellowtail are mostly Rats! I strongly encourage everyone to release most of them!

I expect this weekend to be a good one for those scheduled on 1.5 day or longer trips, as the weather is much improved and hopefully the 3 to 4 degree drop in water temps will warm back up. I believe the Bluefin Tuna will return, make sure to bring some 40 and 50 LB. line for the bruisers!

Yellowtail and White Seabass are being still being caught at the Islands, and all along the coast in strategic areas from south of the border to the Channel Islands. In fact limit style fishing for White Seabass has been the case most of the week at the Channel Islands, with a good mix of big boys, along with school size fish. Huge Halibut are being caught at the Islands on a very consistent basis.

Most of the Barracuda are being caught in San Diego and at the Channel Islands, only a few have shown up from Newport Beach to Santa Monica Bay locally. Most ½ day and ¾ day boats have settled for Rockfish and a sprinkling of Bass.

The Coronado Island fishing for Yellowtail took most of the weekend off with windy conditions. Lots of fish being seen, but few being hooked. As the winds died down later in the week, the Yellowtail fishing picked up with some decent scores for Thursday fishing.

Twilight fishing remains the best fishing for Sand Bass. Most landings are now offering Twilight trips especially on weekends!

The Tribute returned with a nice score on the Yellowfin Tuna and Yellowtail Sunday, 06-01-14:
