Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Yellowtail took a back seat to the Bluefin Tuna on the Offshore scene! Although the weekend was a bit disappointing for the Tuna, by midweek, the Tuna fishing was game on, with numerous limits, and counts over 100 for several boats like the Grande with a one stop day for 130+ to 55 pounds on Thursday! A few Dorado are still being caught on the Kelp Paddies with the Yellowtail, although most boats only go Kelp Paddy hopping when they are done with the Tuna.

The Tuna Pens are back in action this year. Last year saw some epic fishing at the pens. So far this year it is hit and miss. A few good scores have been made off the pens with most days scratch fishing. The private boater got their first chance this year to fish the Bluefin within one day range. Those that fished on the weekend encountered a down bite, with better results later in the week. Those private boaters that ventured out, did have some excellent success on the kelp paddies they found, with Yellowtail and an occasional Dorado being caught.

Private boater Jeff caught his first Bluefin Tuna of the year at the Pens, a 50 pounder:

He also caught some dandy Yellowtail off the Kelp Paddies:

The Channel Islands continues to kick out White Seabass and huge Halibut on selected trips. The Mirage caught 23 White Seabass and 26 big Halibut on their 2 day midweek trip that returned on Wednesday, 07-24-13.

San Clemente Island slowed down over the weekend with only a few Yellowtail being reported.

The Pursuit caught 18 Yellowtail on their Wednesday trip to Catalina. The Sport King and Gail Force have been scratching out a few Yellowtail on their daily trips. So perhaps this bite will again pick up? I have seen no recent reports of any White Seabass being caught. The Calico Bass fishing remains outstanding at the Island, with a few Barracuda mixed in the catch.

Locally the Sand Bass has slowed way down except on the Twilight bites. The Barracuda bite is hit and miss each day, with some excellent afternoon bites. The ½ day boat Monte Carlo got into a wide open Calico Bass bite on their afternoon trip Thursday, catching and releasing 200 Calico Bass. With so many releases the majority of the Bass must have been less than 14 inches? To me this is great news, because next year this fishery will be all the healthier.

The Coronado Islands and Ensenada remain on the slow side, although Ensenada has benefitted from some decent Bluefin Tuna bites offshore.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Yellowtail fishing over the weekend Offshore was excellent, limits around, and most boats caught a smattering of Bluefin Tuna, along with a few Dorado, however few if any Yellowfin Tuna were found? Then the Bluefin Tuna bite went off on Thursday, with many of the Tuna caught in one day range. For example: The Pride caught limits of Bluefin Tuna, 60 for 12 anglers, the Pacific Voyager caught 104 on a two day trip and the Eclipse caught 91. There just might be a chance the private boaters can get into the action finally, if the fish remain in one day range?

The Channel Islands continues to kick out White Seabass and huge Halibut on selected trips. The Mirage caught 61 White Seabass on their 2 day midweek trip. San Clemente Island went off on Tuesday when the Freedom caught 147 Yellowtail to 49 pounds. They caught 46 and 41 respectively on their last two trips to the Island, Wednesday and Thursday.

Only a few Yellowtail are being caught at Catalina recently, although The Sport King did catch 20 Yellowtail on their Thursday trip. So perhaps this bite will again pick up? I have read of no reports of any White Seabass being caught recently. The Calico Bass fishing remains outstanding at the Island, with a Barracuda mixed in the catch.

Locally the Sand Bass and Barracuda bite is on one day and slow another? For example the Victory on Monday caught 112 Sand Bass and 231 Barracuda, whereas their Wednesday trip yielded 68 Sand Bass and 38 Barracuda, with even lower counts on Thursday. Every now and then a local Yellowtail is being caught.

Sand Bass fishing on the Twilight trips has been for the most part better fishing, and every now and then the Barracuda bite turns on at night.

Both the Coronado Islands and Ensenada has for the most part been inactive. Although Ensenada has got in on some decent Bluefin Tuna bites offshore.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

After a slower weekend of fishing Offshore the fishing improved with some flat calm seas later in the week. A few more Dorado and Yellowfin Tuna have been mixed in the counts, while the Bluefin Tuna bite has also improved, with Tuna averaging 30 to 40 pounds and an occasional fish to 87 pounds. The Kelp Paddy Yellowtail fishing which took a nose dive on the weekend, then returned to mostly limit fishing mid-week. Still almost all these fish are being caught well over 100 miles from San Diego, necessitating you at least fish on a 1.5 day trip or longer. So far this year the private boater is shut out of the offshore fishing scene due to the distance needed to travel to the zone?

The Channel Islands continues to kick out White Seabass and huge Halibut on selected trips. San Clemente Island yielded a 58 pound Yellowtail off the Thunderbird on Thursday, 07-11-13.

The Yellowtail being caught at Catalina, has slipped some with most boats catching under 10. Very few reports of any White Seabass are being caught. The Calico Bass fishing is outstanding at the Island, and a good mix of Barracuda is also available for action as the Pursuit caught 200 on their Wednesday, 07-10-13 trip.

Locally the Sand Bass and Barracuda have been mixed together, allowing the ½ day and ¾ day boats to catch limits on both on selected days. Every now and then a local Yellowtail is being caught in the Horseshoe Kelp area.

The Coronado Islands has for the most part been inactive. Ensenada remains relatively quiet as well.

Angler Aaron holding a nine pound Sand Bass caught on Saturday, 07-06-13:

Private boater Lal and I took advanatage of a wide open Barracuda and mixed Bass bite on Saturday, 07-06-13. We spent most of the morning catching and releasing 30 Calico and Sand Bass to five pounds. Then after a slow period of fishing the Horseshoe Kelp area we were on our way home when we came upon a massive school of breaking fish under an enormous flock of diving birds. We enjoyed the next three hours throwing plastics and getting bit on almost every cast, not knowing whether we would hook a Barracuda, Sand or Calico Bass. We finshed the day with 20 Calico Bass, 40+ Sand Bass and 40+ Barracuda, for a rare two man 100 fish day. Some pictures:

A five pound Sand Bass, and what a nice way to start off the day.

I drop back down and get bit hard again, more violent head shakes, and some screaming drag. This time I reel up a 4.5 pound Sand Bass, wow that was fun!

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The offshore scene is looking up as Dorado and Yellowfin Tuna have shown up with an improving Bluefin Tuna bite, with Tuna averaging 30 to 40 pounds and an occasional fish to 70 pounds. The Kelp Paddy Yellowtail fishing has thinned out some, unless you're on a boat running the distance, well over 100 miles, then limits remain the rule.

White Seabass and huge Halibut continue to be caught at the Channel Islands or along the coast. San Clemente Island has hot recently for both White Seabass and Yellowtail to over 40 pounds.

There have been numerous good counts of Yellowtail being caught at Catalina, primarily on the front side of the Island. Only a few White Seabass are being caught. The Calico Bass fishing is outstanding at the Island, and a good mix of Barracuda is also available for action.

Locally the Barracuda returned for some decent off the ½ day and ¾ day boats, with a number of boats reporting several hundred on any given day. An occasional local Yellowtail is being caught in the Horseshoe Kelp area. The Sand Bass bite has been sporadic of late, with lots more Sand Bass being released less than 14 inches. Recently the San Diego fleet has been seeing great action on Sand Bass averaging 3 to 6 pounds.

The Coronado Islands have yielded only modest counts of Yellowtail throughout the week. Ensenada has been relatively quiet as well.
