Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

This week produced more insane fishing for Tuna and Tails! More and more Dorado moving into the area, even better! The weekend boat pressure put the hex on close to shore fishing, yet those that ventured a little further out away from the maddening crowd got the job done!

Despite mid-week winds unfavorable to most fishing, both Sport Boats and private boaters alike found good fishing.

The only thing a 1.5 day trip or longer provides fishing until dark, and a bit further distance to get to some of the better Bluefin Tuna fishing in US waters. However, one day boats and ¾ day boats still got into some decent Bluefin Tuna fishing. Surprisingly there were catches of Tuna approaching 100 pounds in numerous cases! Even Yellowfin Tuna have been caught over 50 pounds and a few Big Eye Tuna made the counts.

Unbelievable that so many boats are finding Tuna so close to shore, some reports of as little as 3 miles from the coast.

The Barracuda are mostly gone or being ignored due to the Tuna Frenzy. A few caught here and there. Island fishing is almost an afterthought as it is an offshore game plan right now!

Some boats are finding some good schools of huge Bonito to 17 pounds. It's been a crazy and fun year so far.

How about a 100 pound Bluefin Tuna off the Freedom out of Long Beach:

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Tuna and Tail fishing is absolutely off the charts right now. Every private boater with a boat will probably be out searching for fish this weekend and the weather is expected to be excellent. ½ day, ¾ day and full day boats have been out fishing the 1.5 day and longer trips in most cases, as the Tuna are so close to shore, under 20 miles and as close as 5 to 7 miles from the coast.

The full moon over the weekend combined with 12 to 20 knot winds and big swells made for some unpleasant conditions and poorer fishing on 1.5 to 3 day trips. However, when the winds calmed down on Monday the fishing went absolutely berserk! The Bluefin Tuna ban put a downer on expectations, which were quickly forgotten when easy limits of Yellowfin Tuna were achieved so close to port, over a wide area of the coast. More and more Dorado are showing up in the counts as well!

The Barracuda are gone and then they are back out of Long Beach, San Pedro and on down to Newport Beach and Dana Point. The best count was off the ½ day boat Monte Carlo out of San Pedro on Thursday, with 100 Barracuda landed. Many local boats are concentrating on the opportunity to catch Tuna and Tails rather than search for Barracuda schools. Some boats are finding some good schools of Bonito; another added bit of excitement to this season's fishing!

OK private boaters, be careful out there, as the boat traffic will be unreal, so watch out for other water craft and don't set the auto pilot and leave the wheel! All eyes on deck be alert!

Due to offshore fishing the Coronado Islands are no longer being targeted. To be expected the enormous run on White Seabass at the Channel Islands slowed down. Same for San Clemente Island. Good fishing for Huge Halibut adds to the excitement. Catalina fishing for Yellowtail picked up a little bit with an occasional White Seabass in the mix. Calico Bass fishing has also improved.

Daytime Bass fishing is an after thought right now, with no signs of the annual spawn cycle?

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The Barracuda are back out of Long Beach, San Pedro and on down to Newport Beach and Dana Point. The best count yesterday was on the ¾ day boat Enterprise which landed 196 Barracuda along with plenty of Sculpin and a few Bass. Local Bass fishing is up and down, with some excellent days followed by some slow ones.

On the Offshore scene, out of San Diego, the Yellowfin Tuna are within one day range, under 60 miles. There remains a nice area of fish in the 80 to 90 mile range as well. A good mix of Yellowtail is being found on Kelp Paddies in many areas. An occasional school of big Bluefin Tuna to 100 pounds makes a showing usually catching any angler with light tackle off guard?

The private boater can still join the fun in Tuna fishing with the fish moving closer, although that nice school of fish at the 425 has moved on. Lots of private boaters have searched the US banks to no avail, not even very many Yellowtail on Kelp? With water temps way over 70 degrees everywhere, we should see better action on the northern banks soon? Hopefully a good herd of Dorado will begin to play!

Private boater Jim with a Bluefin Tuna:

The White Seabass fishing at the Channel Islands continues at a unbelievable pace, with many boats returning with three fish limits for all! Add to that action with huge Halibut being caught on almost all the trips.

San Clemente Island has been hot as of late with a good combination of Yellowtail to 40 pounds, Halibut and White Seabass! Catalina fishing for Yellowtail picked up a little bit with an occasional White Seabass in the mix. Calico Bass fishing has been steady with some Barracuda in the mix.

Daytime Bass fishing continues to improve, with some nice pockets of Calico Bass to go with the Sand Bass. The fish are getting ready to spawn and are loaded with eggs. The annual spawn should begin soon, as water temps as high as 70 degrees provides ideal conditions for spawning.

Fishing for Yellowtail at the Coronado Islands maintains at a steady pick of 10 to 30 fish. Private boaters have found fish at all three islands.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The private boater finally got an opportunity to join the fun in Tuna fishing over the weekend, with fish within 25 to 30 miles of San Diego. The majority of the Tuna were Yellowfin and some good sized Yellowtail were also caught. Most of the Tuna are being caught trolling, with bait mostly limited to Anchovies or for those that choose to make bait (Mackerel) which they don't seem to want. The famous 425 Bank was the most productive area, anywhere within five miles south or southwest of the high spot.

There are areas of fish from 60 to 100 miles which are being pursued by the 1.5 day and longer trips with moderate success. A combined mix of 100 fish per boat which includes both species of Tuna and Yellowtail with an occasional Dorado thrown in. Boats leaving out of Long Beach, San Pedro, Newport Beach and Dana point have also gotten in on the action. Have not heard of any Tuna in US waters, other than a small Yellowfin Tuna caught in Newport Beach Harbor in a net?

I am stoked as I'm heading down to San Diego this afternoon to fish on the Condor on a 2.5 day trip that returns Sunday morning. The weather looks sensational!

How about Yellowfin Tuna inside Newport Beach Harbor? El Nino, yep!

¾ day boat El Gato out of San Diego finds the Tuna, Monday, 06-30-14:

And the beat goes on with a steady pick at the Islands, as fishing for Yellowtail and White Seabass continues, with both the Channel Islands and San Clemente having kicked out good counts on both species lately. Good fishing for Huge Halibut adds to the excitement. Catalina fishing for Yellowtail picked up a little bit with an occasional White Seabass in the mix. Calico Bass fishing has also improved.

Most of the Barracuda fished locally are being caught north of Newport Beach, there is a scattering of fish out of Long Beach and San Pedro. The Twilight trips have also picked up some nice Barracuda to go with the excellent night Bass bite. The bite in Santa Monica Bay also cooled off with some decent counts on any given day.

I fished with Lal on the Rubber Ducky and we caught over 100 mixed Bass, 80% Calico Bass to five pounds on Sunday, 06-29-14, all released, all on the plastics. We found water temps as high 71.5 degrees, unreal for early July? The Calico Bass were very active in the water column as we caught fish from bottom to within 15 feet of the surface. A few pictures:

Here I am with a nice 4+ pound Calico Bass:

Here is Lal with a 5 pound Sand Bass:

Fishing for Yellowtail at the Coronado Islands remained steady during the week with counts as high as 25 on the San Diego, Tuesday, 07-01-14, and the Malahini produced 11 Yellowtail with over 180 Barracuda, making for a fun day of fishing.
