Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

I think we can begin saying this has been the year of the Bluefin Tuna? I sure can't remember having such a consistent bite on these fish for so long. Despite the warm 70+ degree water they are still biting. Everyone is now hoping for the Yellowfin Tuna to join in the fun. There have been a few good scores, however, no signs yet of the Yellowfin moving into US waters? Some Yellowfin have been found under the Porpoise, but these instances are so far, few and far between.

Meanwhile the Offshore action continues at full speed ahead on all four exotics-Yellowfin Tuna, Bluefin Tuna, Do Dos and Tails. The one day boats have been able to catch three of the four species and in good numbers too. Most of the Yellowfin have been caught on the 1.5 to multi day trips further south.

The Yellowtail and Dorado (Mahi Mahi) fishing on the Kelp Paddies continue to be off the charts in many areas below 50 miles south of the border to over 150 miles. The ¾ day boats out of San Diego have been slaying them on many occasions.

Locally there are not many kelp paddies that are holding fish, and that is if you can find one? Yet occasionally the Mother Load Kelp Paddy is found. So far this week most of the private boater reports contain few fish being caught. Lal and I took the Ducky on a 105 mile boat ride on Wednesday, 08-29-12 and located only three small Kelp Paddies off the 277. One of the three held six Dorado and Lal coaxed one 10 pounder into biting. The rest had lockjaw? We listened to many boaters on the water with similar results.

On some days the ¾ day boats out of Newport Beach and Long Beach some found the right kelp paddy. For example the Freelance on Wednesday, 08-29-12 caught 3 Yellowtail, 73 Dorado and 35 Rockfish. Out of the same landing as the Freelance the Bongo's III on Thursday, 08-30-12, caught 30 Yellowtail and 30 Dorado, that's full limits for the 3 anglers aboard, wow!

The Toronado out of Pierpoint Landing ran a trip on Thursday, 08-30-12 and caught 5 Bluefin Tuna, 52 Yellowtail and 41 Dorado.

The Freedom out of 22nd St. Landing caught 102 Yellowtail and 18 Dorado on Tuesday, 08-28-12.

The ½ day boat Monte Carlo had 7 Dorado and a Yellowtail on their trip Wednesday, 08-29-12.

Here is a big Halibut off the Monte Carlo:

Private boater Captain Ron went fishing on the luxurious yacht ''Salt Fever" with friends over the weekend. They caught 14 Bluefin Tuna on Sunday at the Pens, while their Saturday results included some smaller Yellowfin Tuna to 15 pounds and a smattering of Yellowtail and Dorado.

Last weekend was the annual Make a Wish Tournament and it was again very successful in raising funds of well over $200,000 for the unfortunate kids with terminal diseases. Private boater Jerry and friend caught 33 and 34 pound Bluefin Tuna at the pens to win big fish honors in the small boat division, 1st and 2nd, plus the outboard division.

Private boater Ron on the boat "Reel Hard" and friends won 1st place on the overall small boat division, with 3rd and 5th place finish on big fish honors. Congrats guys, quite an accomplishment.

According to angler Spence and his friend their trip on the Pride Tuesday, 08-28-12 was wide open on the Bluefin Tuna, with a few Dorado and an Albacore mixed in. Some pictures:

An Albacore, must have been lost?

The Aztec, from a 2.5 day trip that returned Wednesday, 08-29-12 with 77 Bluefin Tuna to 45 pounds, 2 Albacore Tuna, 34 Yellowtail and 48 Dorado.

Locally the targeted fishing is mostly Sculpin and Rockfish, and when limits are reached early they go look for some Bass on the chew. According to Japan Ron the ¾ day Victory had a good day of fishing on Wednesday, 08-29-12, catching Lingcod, Big Reds, Sculpin, nine Barracuda and a White Seabass. Some pictures from Japan Ron:

Twilight fishing:
The Enterprise fished on Thursday, 08-30-12, and caught 1 Calico Bass, 74 Sand Bass and 33 Sculpin for only 12 anglers. The Freelance fished Tuesday evening, 08-29-12 and caught 121 Sculpin and 100 Sand Dab. The Monte Carlo fished on Sunday evening, 08-26-12 and caught 2 Halibut, 81 Sand Bass, 2 Barracuda and 16 Sculpin.

The Islands

Catalina/Santa Barbara Island!
The Sport King had a good day at the Island on Monday, 08-27-12 catching 2 Yellowtail, 63 Calico Bass, 2 Barracuda, 5 Sheephead, 5 Rockfish and 60 Perch.
The Pursuit out of 22nd St. Landing, ran to the Island on Thursday, 08-30-12, with 29 anglers catching 102 Calico Bass, 12 Barracuda, 19 Sheephead, 22 Rockfish and 192 Perch.

San Clemente Island!
The Fury out of Dana Wharf fished a 2-day trip over the weekend returning Sunday, 08-26-12 with 25 anglers catching 6 Bluefin Tuna, 35 Yellowtail and 8 Dorado.
The Freedom caught 8 Yellowtail 32 Dorado 22 Sheephead 120 Whitefish on their Sunday, 08-26-12 trip.

Down South-San Diego and good ole Mexico!
The Yellowtail fishing at the Coronado Islands has been very good for private boaters. The ¾ day boats are running offshore to catch Tuna and Tails as the Visa mess is still up in the air? The last few days the ¾ day boats have found limit style fishing on the Dorado also with lots of Yellowtail being caught offshore on the kelp Paddies.
The ¾ day boat San Diego out of Seaforth Landing caught 82 Yellowtail and 7 Dorado on their Wednesday, 08-29-12 trip.

The Mission Belle headed out on Sunday, 08-26-12, and caught 82 Yellowtail and 28 Dorado.

The ¾ day boat Malahini caught 1 Bluefin Tuna, 69 Yellowtail and 32 Dorado on their trip on Monday, 08-27-12.
Charter Master Jamie, of Seasons Sportfishing fished offshore during the week on several trips and caught plenty of Yellowtail and Dorado. Some pictures:

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

In recent weeks the Private Boater has enjoyed some of the best fishing in three years. The Offshore action has provided opportunities to catch-Yellowfin Tuna, Bluefin Tuna, Do Dos and Tails. The weather has been exceptional for most of the last two weeks, leading to water temps as high as 75 degrees, yikes, Cabo eat your heart out!
An enormous amount of Dorado (Mahi Mahi), are being seen and caught from 150 miles south of the border to 75 miles north of the border. In fact the ½ day boat Patriot caught some Dorado off of Newport Beach recently. The Yellowtail fishing on the Kelp Paddies have been off the charts in many areas.
The secret of successful fishing is finding the Mother Load Kelp Paddy. You find it, and they bite and everyone goes home happy. Locally there are many kelp paddies that are not holding fish, yet there are a bunch of paddies that yield huge results. So don't give up, keep on looking, you may just find that Mother Load Kelp Paddy.

Where ever it was caught, it's a keeper?

Now that's a big Tail:

Speaking of private boater trips, my good friend Lal went fishing on the luxurious yacht ''Salt Fever" with his son and friends. The seven anglers caught 34 Bluefin Tuna over the weekend to 41 pounds, with most of the tuna over 30 pounds. Some pictures:

Well not to be denied, I went fishing with Captain Chris on his luxurious yacht a 50' Viking, "Bad To The Bone" on Sunday 08-19-12. The six of us found the Bluefin Tuna on a serious chew. Some pictures:

Private boaters have been combing the seas from 50 miles south of the border and all the way up to making runs northwest out of Newport Beach. We are all hoping the fish put on a show similar to four years ago, when a run of 10 miles out of either Long Beach or Santa Monica Bay yielded Kelp Paddies loaded with Dorado and Yellowtail. Then the Yellowfin Tuna moved in under the porpoise and it was game on for 30 to 40 pound Tuna.
Angler Tunahead Ron fished the Condor on a 1.5 day trip Wed.-08-22-12 and slammed the fish again. His buddy was hot, catching an offshore slam, Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado and Yellowtail. Some pictures:

My good friend Rick fished a 2 day trip on the Pride, and loaded the boat with some Bluefin Tuna, yellowtail and Dorado over the weekend. Some pictures:

The Aztec, on its latest 1.5 day trip, which will return Friday morning, 08-24-12, caught 36 Yellowtail, 43 Bluefin Tuna, 38 Dorado and 2 Yellowfin Tuna to 45 pounds.
Angler Raul fished with friends on the Sea Adventure II on Wed.-08-22-12 and caught Dorado, Yellowtail and Bluefin Tuna. Friend Maria caught her first ever Dorado:

Locally:
Private boater Bill fished out of Long Beach over the weekend and found a huge Halibut on the chew:

The Freedom out of 22nd St. Landing caught 21 Bluefin Tuna, 62 Yellowtail and 132 Dorado on a 2-day trip.

The Barracuda fishing is all but over for now, with Rockfish, Sculpin, Sand Bass and Calico Bass the targeted species. The ½ day boat Southern Cal had a great day of Sand Bass and Barracuda fishing on Wednesday, 08-15-12 with 46 Sand Bass and 53 Barracuda caught. While the ¾ day Victory managed 69 Sand Bass, 28 Barracuda and 150 Sculpin. Some pictures from Japan Ron:

In Santa Monica Bay
Jackpot Jimmy got out on the ¾ day boat Tradition on Saturday, 08-18-12 and they caught some huge Salmon Grouper, Sheephead, Sand Bass and Jimmy caught a 13 pound Halibut:

Newport Beach and Dana Point. There has been some excellent Sculpin fishing with some good scores on the Bass. For example the Freelance caught 290 Sculpin and 100 Sand Dab on their ¾ day trip, Sunday, 08-19-12.

A couple of White Seabass have also shown up in the counts.

Long Beach and San Pedro
There was some great Sculpin and Sand Bass fishing during the week, when not targeting the Barracuda which have been MIA most of the week. The Victory according to Ron caught easy limits of Sculpin and half limits of Sand Bass on their Wed-08-22-12 trip.

The Islands

The Fury out of Dana Wharf fished on Tuesday, 08-21-12 with 47 anglers catching 4 Yellowtail, 61 Calico Bass, 2 Sand Bass and 1 Sheephead.

Down South-San Diego and good ole Mexico!
The Yellowtail fishing at the Coronado Islands has been very good for private boaters. The ¾ day boats are running offshore to catch Tuna and Tails as the Visa mess is still up in the air? The last few days the ¾ day boats have found limit style fishing on the Dorado with some Yellowtail being caught offshore on the kelp Paddies.
The ¾ day boat San Diego out of Seaforth Landing caught 11 Bluefin Tuna, 3 Yellowtail and 9 Dorado on their Wednesday, 08-22-12 trip.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Offshore action continues at full speed-Yellowfin Tuna, Bluefin Tuna, Do Dos and Tails. The weather has been between very good and sensational, leading to more outstanding fishing over the weekend and during the week!
Lots of Dorado (Mahi Mahi), are being seen in the very warm water up to 73 degrees in some areas. These Dorado seem to be bait shy, preferring the natural baits (sauries) to the big sardines being offered. The Yellowtail fishing on the Kelp Paddies have been off the charts in the 100+ mile range, requiring a 1.5 day trip or longer to reach.
Finding the Mother Load Kelp Paddy is still the major task to achieve a great count on the fish. The big schools of Yellowfin Tuna have been more difficult to find and the Bluefin Tuna have been found closer to the Pens located about 50 miles south of San Diego. There have been some off the charts catches of Yellowtail and Dorado on the ¾ day boats, meaning you don't have to run far to load up on the fish.
Check out this count off the ¾ day boat Malihini from 08-15-12, 116 Yellowtail and 80 Dorado for 40 anglers.
A Jackpot Yellowtail on the Pride plus some Bluefin Tuna and Dorado fishing Tuesday, 08-14-12. Some pictures:

In Santa Monica Bay
Mostly Rockfish with some decent counts on Sand Bass and a few Calico's mixed in.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Offshore Grand Slams-Yellowfin Tuna, Bluefin Tuna, Do Dos and Tails. The weather has been sensational during the week and provided excellent opportunities for catching an Offshore Grand Slam; which is catching all four species on a single trip, usually in a single day, not all that common, yet has happened more frequently has fishing has been outstanding.

More and more Dorado (Mahi Mahi), are being caught off Kelp Paddies along with Yellowtail and the two species of Tuna. There have been some excellent trips in one day range where limits of Bluefin Tuna were caught. The area below 120 miles and on down to 150 miles has provided more opportunities for catching Yellowfin Tuna, to go with the other species being targeted.

On any given day the catch is dependent on finding the Mother Load Kelp Paddy, often only one Paddy needs to be found to fill the boat up. If the Captain and crew cannot find that magic Kelp, it can lead to a disappointing trip. Open water schools of fish are few and far between, I.E. there is a distinct lack of troll fish being caught.

On the one day trips, the Pride managed limits of Bluefin Tuna both Wednesday and Thursday as early as 7:30 am. They then spent the rest of the day looking for Kelp Paddies to add Dorado and Yellowtail to the scores. Some pictures:

Angler Ron hit the Jackpot, literally on the Condor which docked Wednesday morning, 08-08-12, returning from a 1.5 day trip that caught the offshore grand slam, Yellowfin, Bluefin Tuna, Dorado and Yellowtail. Ron won the jackpot with a big Yellowfin Tuna to go with his personal slam, congrats Ron!

I fished on the Aztec, on a 1.5 day trip that left Monday night and returned Wednesday morning. Our count consisted of 8 Yellowtail, most in the 18 to 22 pound range, 12 Dorado, and five Yellowfin Tuna, with a 35 pounder taking Jackpot. We stopped or trolled by over 30 Kelp Paddies with most not holding fish and never found the magic one, despite going the distance of up to 150 miles. My good luck deserted me on this trip as I caught only one small Dorado, which was released. Some pictures:

Some pictures of the Aztec's 8-05-12 1.5 day trip where they caught over 100 Bluefin Tuna:

Jackpot picture of the 3 day Vagabond trip returning 08-06-12, with Yellowfin Tuna to 53 pounds:

Nice Legend Bluefin Tuna:

A nice Dorado caught by Bob:

Angler Mike had a great trip on the Islander on a 1.5 day trip that fished all day Saturday, down 140 miles, catching Yellowtail, Dorado and Tuna. Some pictures:

At San Clemente Island the big Yellowtail and White Seabass are showing up in the counts. Catalina remains very quiet, for this time of year.
Limits of Calico Bass plus 7 White Seabass were caught on the Dreamer, Saturday, 08-04-12:

Locally the Barracuda fishing is hit and miss, same for Sand Bass and Calico Bass. The ½ day boat Southern Cal had a great day of Sand Bass fishing on Wednesday, 08-08-12 with 124 caught to go with only one Barracuda. While on Monday, 08-06-12, the ¾ day Victory managed 139 Barracuda and 2 Sand Bass. Some pictures from Japan Ron:

Generally the best Sand Bass fishing is in the evening on the Twilight runs, although there have been some great Sculpin fishing too.
Twilight fishing:
The Enterprise fished on Monday, 08-06-12, and caught 47 Sand Bass, 1 Barracuda and 12 Sculpin. The Monte Carlo out of LA Harbor Landing ran a trip on Saturday, 08-04-12, and caught 42 Sand Bass and 4 Sculpin. The Freelance fished Tuesday evening, 08-07-12 and caught 175 Sculpin and 50 Sand Dab.

In Santa Monica Bay
The ¾ day boat Tradition caught their second Yellowtail of the year on their trip Saturday, 08-04-12. They found the Rockcod in the morning on a decent chew, as the Barracuda were MIA, and then had a few Bass hit the deck. The Barracuda returned on Sunday, it has been that kind of an erratic year? Pictures courtesy of Jackpot Jimmy:

The 1/2 day boat Redondo found excellent Barracuda fishing on Sunday, 08-05-12, catching 12 Sand Bass and 126 Barracuda. They followed that trip up with good Calico Bass fishing on Thursday, catching 124.

Newport Beach and Dana Point.
There has been some excellent Sculpin fishing with some good scores on the Calico Bass. For example the Patriot caught 200 Calico Bass (limits) for the 20 anglers on their ¾ day trip, Thursday, 08-09-12.

Private boater Joe found a couple of Halibut on the chew Monday, 08-06-12:

Private boater Danial fished with friends and released this estimated 100 pound Black Seabass and kept a 19 pound White Seabass at the Island Saturday, 08-04-12:

Down South-San Diego and good ole Mexico!
The Yellowtail fishing at the Coronado Islands has been very good for private boaters. The ¾ day boats are running offshore to catch Tuna and Tails as the Visa mess is still up in the air? The last few days the ¾ day boats have found limit style fishing on the Dorado with some Yellowtail being caught offshore on the kelp Paddies.
The ¾ day boat San Diego out of Seaforth Landing caught 6 Yellowtail and 38 Dorado on their Wednesday, 08-08-12 trip.

The Mission Belle headed out on Thursday, 08-09-12, and caught 8 Yellowtail and 28 Dorado (limits).

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Tuna, Tuna, Tuna, Do Dos and Tails. The weekend weather did little to help the offshore performance; however, sensational weather during the week provided excellent fishing on the Bluefin Tuna, and the bigger Yellowtail being caught off the Kelp Paddies. There are several areas holding Bluefin Tuna, one area remains below 120 miles and another between 70 and 80 miles. Some Bluefin are biting even closer to home, around 30 miles from Point Loma, where the ¾ day boats have successfully fished them.

More and more Dorado are being seen and caught, while some big scores on Yellowfin Tuna were reported in the over 100 mile areas. For a lot of us the best news was some solid fishing on 1 day trips, as many anglers cannot get multiple days off to go fishing. Although your best bet on achieving a solid catch ratio is to book a 2.5 trip, which allows the boat to fish until dark on both days, and wake up in the zone on the second day.

For example: the First String docked Thursday morning, returning from a 2.5 day trip that slammed both Yellowfin and Bluefin Tuna, full limits on both species for 26 anglers, 520 Tuna in all, wow!
I fished on the Aztec, on a 1 day trip that left Tuesday night and returned late Wednesday evening. Our count consisted of 46 Yellowtail, most in the 18 to 22 pound range, with a 30 pounder taking Jackpot. We also caught five Bluefin Tuna to 25 pounds and one Dorado. The Aztec did a quick turnaround and ran another 1 day trip on Thursday, catching 40 Bluefin Tuna and 1 Albacore, yep that rare Tuna, which must have been lost? Some pictures:

Captain Adam took a charter group out of Oceanside to fish the local banks of the 181 and 182 on 08-01-12 and they caught Yellowtail and Dorado off the Kelp Paddies:

It has been fairly quiet at San Clemente Island with a few big Yellowtail being caught on most trips, and occasionally they find a school of biting White Seabass. The same remains true for Catalina, very quiet, with decent Calico Bass fishing in both areas.
The Barracuda come, the Barracuda go. Recently they returned in a fury! On any given day the local Sand Bass and Calico Bass fishing is excellent, which depends on conditions, current, water temp, etc.
The Mardiosa managed to catch 3 White Seabass, 45 Calico Bass, 2 Barracuda, 2 Sheephead, 2 Black Sea Bass released and 3 Sargo on their trip Monday, 07-30-12.

Limits of Calico Bass plus some decent White Seabass were caught on the Dreamer, Monday, 07-30-12:

The Dreamer caught 8 White Seabass Friday morning, August 03, 2012, and were still fishing.

The Yellowtail fishing at the Coronado Islands was very good on Saturday, 07-28-12, and then word came down that the ¾ day boats would not be allowed to fish the Islands unless they first checked in with immigration in Ensenada, which is ludicrous. There were reports of private boaters being asked to leave the area, and most private boaters are reluctant to return until this latest mess is cleared up. No updates yet.
