Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The good weather window over the weekend was extremely short lived, yet many private boaters wanted to get a last trip in before the holidays. Most targeted Rockfish, both shallow water and Deep, as well as Sheephead and Whitefish, and a few found the mixed Calico and Sand Bass on the chew.

As far as Sport Boats go, most ran either ½ day or ¾ day trips, mostly concentrating on Rockfish, Sculpin with a few decent days catching mixed Bass and a Halibut or two.

The rain came on Monday, and again on Wednesday, with wind on Thursday, not providing much in the way of any reports or even opportunities to go fishing. The boats that fished on Thursday had good counts of Rockfish, Sculpin and some big fat Lingcod. The season for Rockfish, Sheephead, Lingcod and Whitefish closes at midnight 12-31-12 until 03-01-13. So this weekend and Monday are your last opportunities to load of the freezer with Taco meat.

The Voyager and Old Glory have 1 and 1.5 days scheduled out of San Diego for tonight to run to San Clemente Island for freezer specials. Out of San Pedro the Freedom is also scheduled to run to San Clemente Island.

I fished with private boater Lal on the Rubber Ducky on Saturday, 12-22-12. The recent great bite on the Calico Bass slowed way down, while we caught more Sand Bass on this trip, it was a very slow chew, yet we caught a huge variety of critters, such as Lingcod, Reds, Johnny Bass, and Copper Rockfish. All but three of the 20+ Bass caught were released and 28 of the 30 Rockfish caught were released. A few Pictures:

A bit later the sunrise reminds us how super living in Southern California is:

The fishing was just a slow pick on the Sand Bass with only one Calico Bass out of ten. A big change from the last few fishing trips where the Calico Bass dominated the counts.
However, the Rockfish had moved in and were on the chew, including a bunch of small 1 to 2 pound Reds and three legal sized Lingcod:

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Thought I better post this today, there could be no tomorrow, hate to see all my hard work go to waste?

Since the weather over the weekend, and for most of the week, was either rainy, or windy, or both, few brave soles ventured out to go fishing. There were some die hard private boaters that targeted mixed Calico and Sand Bass, Rockfish, both shallow water and Deep, as well as Sheephead and Whitefish, and a few found the Halibut on the chew.

As far as Sport Boats go, there were a couple of reports from the local Islands, Catalina and San Clemente. The Channel Islands are yielding great counts on the Big Reds and Lingcod. The ½ day and ¾ day boats mostly concentrated on Rockfish, Sculpin and on occasion some had a few decent days catching mixed Bass and a Halibut or two.

Although some of the San Diego boats scheduled 1.5 day trips to San Clemente Island, I did not see any reports on a successful trip, if they made it out?

So in this report I have included a number of what I hope you will find humorous events and photos leading up to this fateful last day of the Mayan Calendar, and the first day of winter. Have a very Merry Christmas everyone.

This week Sergio says:

Then of course all Redneck fishermen are hoping to find the following under their tree for Christmas morning:

Locally the target is Rockfish, Lingcod, Sculpin, White Fish and Sheephead, with a few Calico and Sand Bass mixed in. Occasional a nice Halibut is added to the counts.

Private boater Loking fished with a friend in Newport Bay on Saturday, 12-15-12 and caught and released a bunch of Spotted Bay Bass, Sand and Calico Bass, plus a decent sized Halibut. Some pictures:

Some good sized Lingcod caught Thursday, 12-20-12 off the ¾ day boat Sum Fun:

Angler Peggy with a 9.5 pound Lingcod caught off the Reel Fun, Monday, 12-17-12:

The Channel Islands Rockfishing is hot!

Nice Lingcod caught on the Mirage, Sunday, 12-16-12:

Down South-San Diego and good ole Mexico!
Not much to report, I hear the 1.5 day trips to Colonet are not being scheduled this year due to the stupid Visa regulations?

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The weather over the weekend was extremely nice, and provided good opportunities for all to go fishing. There were a number of private boaters that ventured out for a variety of species. Some targeted Thresher Sharks, some targeted Rockfish, both shallow water and Deep, as well as Sheephead and Whitefish, and a few found the mixed Calico and Sand Bass on the chew. In addition there were some private boaters that drifted for and caught Halibut. All in all a nice variety of fish were caught this week.

As far as Sport Boats go, there were few reports to the local Islands, Catalina and San Clemente. The Channel Islands are yielding great counts on the Big Reds and Lingcod. The ½ day and ¾ day boats mostly concentrated on Rockfish, Sculpin and on occasion some had a few decent days catching mixed Bass and a Halibut or two. I see that more boats out of San Diego are scheduling 1.5 day trips to San Clemente Island or San Nicolas Island. Not happy to see this, as these boats would generally be targeting Rockfish along the Mexican coast. However, Mexico remains confused with their policy on Visas, and have not provided an economical way to comply with their new law to allow Sport Boats to fish the Mexican coastline.

The rain came on Thursday, and is expected to continue throughout the weekend, as well as into early next week. Looks like another week where most of us will be land locked. Darn, finding enough material to write about is difficult enough with good weather, virtually impossible with lousy weather.

Private boater Tim went out seeking a Thresher Shark and his mission was accomplished:

Not much to report, I hear the 1.5 day trips to Colonet are not being scheduled this year due to the stupid Visa regulations?

Only in Cabo, would you find a Marlin swimming in the harbor, I wonder how long it took before someone tossed him a bait?

Wow, now that's a monster Dorado, caught in Panama:

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Wow, what can I say: Four days of rain, followed by a couple of days of fog and wind, no bueno for fishing! Yes, there were a few who ventured out, mostly ½ day and ¾ day boats fishing locally. A private boater or two or more ventured out in the weather to drift for Halibut or hoop for Bugs. I don't do Hoop reports, that's not fishing to me? On the positive side, the weather does look good for this weekend and into the middle of next week.

There have been a few decent catches of Halibut lately, some big Lingcod, and the "Magician" private boater Matt, found some White Seabass on the chew to go with some good Reds and Lingcod fishing. It was only last week, when he woke everyone up, by catching big Home Guard Yellowtail. Some pictures of the White Seabass and Rockfish:

This week, Sergio says:

Just another pretty lady that fishes:
