Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The White Seabass Island bite slows down, although plenty of Coastal Tankers are still being caught, provided you're willing to put in the time for them. A few huge Yellowtail are mixed in with the Tanker Seabass too, that is not a common occurrence locally? The Coronado Islands and Rockpile down south have heated back up, with Yellowtail counts in the high 30's and fish to 44 pounds. Still a few fish being caught at Catalina, with a few schools spotted at San Clemente Island as well as Santa Barbara Island. Recently the Barracuda show up one day and are gone the next, both in Santa Monica Bay and Long Beach, and now they are back again, with many boats catching limits on Wednesday out of Long Beach.

The excitement level increased when word spread that the First Bluefin Tuna of the year was caught by Danny Lynch on the multi day trip over the Holiday weekend on the Sea Adventure 80, some 95 miles south of Point Loma on a cedar plug trolling:

They also caught a few Yellowtail on the three day trip:

Speaking of Bluefin Tuna, the Royal Star on the way back from Alijos Rocks found some schools of biting Bluefin Tuna to 106 pounds, average size was 75 pounds:

All of the multi-day trips that ran over the Holiday weekend found Mother Wind a big annoyance, preventing any further offshore exploring. My trip on the Aztec out of Seaforth Landing, a 2.5 day trip, spent the morning of the first day searching for Yellowtail in Ensenada Bay. We saw some, but they didn't want to play. Of course on Sunday they bit, while we ventured south to San Martin Island, waking up to 30 knot winds and 53 degree dirty water. Saturday afternoon was spent hammering the Lingcod to 14 pounds, along with some Reds and other Rockfish. Sunday was spent attempting to salvage the day with Whitefish and Sheephead; however, they didn't want to play either. We did spend several hours fishing deep water Rockfish for about 50 Reds and a few more Lingcod. Saturday's Jackpot Lingcod caught by me:

Sunday's Jackpot Lingcod, twins?

The Charter Boat Dreamer caught limits of White Seabass on Monday, 05-28-12. The Mardiosa managed 2 White Seabass, 1 Halibut, 18 Calico Bass, 7 Sheephead and 6 Sargo on Monday, 05-28-12, and then on Thursday, 05-31-12, caught 5 White Seabass, 1 Halibut, and 25 Calico Bass.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The weekend weather was very nice, with the water temps gradually increasing daily to reach the mid 60's, and consequently the fishing continued to improve. More White Seabass were caught at Catalina and a few along the coast to a whopping sixty pounds. Yellowtail remain scarce at Catalina, however, the Calico Bass fishing is much better. More Squid were located at both Catalina and San Clemente Island. Barracuda are moving up the coast and the question is: have they finally arrived in Long Beach? There were sightings on Thursday, yet none were hooked and landed.

Private boater Ron with friend James caught their limit of White Seabass on Saturday, 05-05-12, catching huge 50 and 60 pound fish:

The Charter Boat Options caught limits of White Seabass on their last two trips to Catalina over the weekend.

A number of Private boaters also got into the Catalina White Seabass action this week.

The Yellowtail in La Jolla returned in small quantities, along with a few White Seabass!

There were some decent counts of Yellowtail found at the Coronado Islands and south of South Island during the week, with high counts of 12 Yellowtail caught, along with a smattering of log size Barracuda.

Coronado Island Yellowtail caught on the Voyager, Sunday, 05-06-12:

The arrival of Barracuda locally will most likely be the primary focus this coming week. While local fishing continues to be excellent on Rockfishing, lots of Big Bocaccio, some huge Reds and some very large Lingcod are being caught, as well as lots of Sculpin. Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Despite very calm seas both Saturday and Sunday the weather was very odd. A deep marine layer kept Father Sun, mostly in hiding, however, water temps did rise considerably, providing increased optimism for improved fishing. We hope soon to arrive, those feisty toothy critters known as Barracuda and maybe those fun to catch Bonito. Rising water temps point to better Bass fishing, a White Seabass bite along the coast and at the Islands, as well as more hard fighting Yellowtail arriving locally.

The Yellowtail bite slowed down over the weekend with a lot of boat pressure in La Jolla. The ¾ day boat San Diego had their best day of fishing for the week on Monday with five Yellowtail. These fish are running big, almost all over 20 pounds up to 40 pounds. Some pictures from trips over the weekend during the week:

Angler Greg on his Saturday, 04-21-12 trip on the San Diego trip, a 22 pound Yellowtail:

Ian with a 25+ pound Yellowtail caught on their Wednesday, 04-25-12 trip:

Local fishing remains excellent on Rockfishing, with more nice Lingcod being caught. The only decent fishing for Bass is in the evenings on the Twilight runs.

Twilight fishing: The Native Sun fished on Saturday, April 21, 2012, and caught 89 Sand Bass and 13 Sculpin. The Freelance out of Davey's Locker ran a twilight trip on Monday, 04-23-12, catching1 Calico Bass, 10 Sand Bass, 5 Rockfish and 72 Sculpin.

In Santa Monica Bay
The ¾ day Tradition has been running trips all week, with very light loads and are regularly catching limits on both Rockfish and Sculpin. San Clemente Island!A 25 pound Halibut caught at the Island on a Black Pearl 2-day Kayak trip over the weekend.

I fished with Dave on the private boat "Hooked" on Saturday at the Island with friends Kevin, Bob and Jeff. We loved the calm seas; however, the deep marine layer made it a chilly experience. Fishing was good, yet we had to work for our limits. We did catch a number of big Reds, a Lingcod, and lots of those extinct Bocaccio, and some really nice size Santa Marias and Green Spots. A couple of pictures:

Dave also fished on Tuesday, 04-24-12 and caught four Lingcod to 18 pounds, with a bunch of big Reds:

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
For local fishing in the Santa Monica, Long Beach, Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with trips out of San Diego and Baja, Mexico.
Wow, what a weekend, following up opening day for Rockfish with a bang. Beautiful weather provided all anglers ample opportunity to get out and catch some fish. Almost everyone headed out for their favorite structure spot, hoping to catch Lingcod, Big Reds and assorted other Rockfish. Almost all were rewarded with great fishing. A few continued to target Halibut, while others found Exotics at the Islands.

This was a very exciting week for fishing.
Four Yellowtail were caught at Catalina over the weekend by private boater Jeff, see more details under Catalina. Generally during the Fred Hall Show, this is the time the White Seabass begin to show at the Island, although the cooler water needs to warm up a bit to set them in action. Last weekend's 80 degree weather did not hurt as we saw the water temps increase as much as five degrees from 6am to 6pm. However, the cold front that moved through on Tuesday offset the great weather on the weekend.

The Toronado out of Pierpoint Landing fished San Nicolas Island on Sunday, 03-04-12. Everyone caught limits of Lingcod, a bunch of Rockfish, Whitefish and a big Sheephead that took the Jackpot:

The Constitution ran a 1.5 day trip to Colonet and limited out on Reds and other assorted Rockfish. An 11 pound Cow Cod and a similar sized Red shared the Jackpot. Some pictures:

The Jackpot fish:

Local fishing has been sensational for Rockfish, a good shot at the Lingcod, Sculpin and some Bass. Halibut fishing continues to be excellent when targeted. Improved Bass fishing will depend on increasing water temps.

Twilight fishing: The Slammer out of Redondo Sportfishing ran a trip on Sunday, 3-04-12, with 4 anglers catching 6 Sand Bass, 1 Sheephead, 10 Rockfish, 2 Lingcod, 19 Rock Crab and 2 Spider Crab. The Native Sun ran Twilight trips on Saturday and Sunday catching some Sand Bass and a bunch of Sculpin. The Freelance out of Davey's Locker ran a twilight trip on Sunday, 03-04-12 and caught 2 Calico Bass, 13 Sand Bass, 95 Sculpin and 1 Perch.

In Santa Monica Bay
The Tradition ran ¾ day trips over the weekend, on Saturday, 03-03-12, 37 anglers caught 273 Rockfish, 2 Lingcod, 11 Sculpin, 93 Sand Dab and 1 Thresher Shark .

Private boater Jason fished on Vince's 23' Striper "Big Drum" on Saturday, 03-03-12. Captain Vince found stopped to first catch some Lingcod bait, sand dabs, and then continued on his favorite structure areas usually holding Lings and other bottom critters. The Lingcod were MIA today; however, they caught easy limits of Rockfish, starting with this Copper, then some Reds:

The ½ day boat New Del Mar caught 155 Rockfish and 175 Sculpin (limits) on their Sunday, 03-04-12 trip.

The ¾ day boat Spitfire loads up on the Rockfish:

Newport Beach and Dana Point.

Down South-San Diego and good ole Mexico!
The ¾ day boat out of San Diego, The Point Loma with Captain Ron Baker-34 pound Halibut:

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
For local fishing in the Santa Monica, Long Beach, Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with trips out of San Diego and Baja, Mexico.
With good weather on Saturday and for most of the week, and being a Holiday weekend, this provided numerous opportunities for scheduling lots of fishing. Locally the Sculpin and Bass remain the targeted species, with Halibut being the spice on the cake. Across the border there remains some outstanding fishing for Big Reds and Lingcod, mostly on multi day trips.

We had a fantastic 2.5 day trip on the Aztec, out of Seaforth Landing over the weekend. Limits of Reds complemented by combined limits of other Rockfish, Lingcod, Sheephead and Whitefish. Here are a couple of pictures from my report, to read the full report with lots more pictures click on this link;

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
For local fishing in the Santa Monica, Long Beach, Catalina and San Clemente Islands. Through:
12-29-11

Last Call to scratch that Rockfish itch, tomorrow at midnight they become no take until the season reopens on March, 1st, 2012. Looks to me like lots of anglers this week scratched that itch and found the targeted species, thus it is going to be Fish Tacos on the menu for New Years?

The Constitution ran a 1.5-day trip to Colonet Wednesday, 12-28-11 and they limited out on Big Reds and several monster Lingcod, but no Yellowtail. Some pictures:

No more news on the winter runs of Yellowtail south of the border. The previous week the Pacific Voyager ran a 2.5-day trip to Colonet over the weekend and they caught 11 Yellowtail to 28 pounds, mostly on Yo Yo Iron.

Twilight fishing: Not recently, just wait until summer?

In Santa Monica Bay
Private boater Aren fished Wednesday, 12-28-11 with five fishing buddies out of Santa Monica at the Short Banks. All six limited out on quality rockfish. They sure know how to prepare a meal:

And catch some fish:

Both the New Del Mar and Spitfire had near limits of Sculpin and Rockfish, on their Thursday, 12-29-11 trips, with five Lingcod caught between them.

Newport Beach and Dana Point.
The ¾ day boat Sum Fun had one heck of a week Sculpin fishing, not to mention some big Sheephead and Rockfish. Some pictures:

I fished with private boater Lal and his son Scott on Monday, 12-26-11 in drop dead gorgeous conditions. We had our best bite of the year in the Palos Verdes area, releasing all but a few of our 45 mixed Calico and Sand Bass to 5.5 pounds, plus 10 assorted Rockfish and a Halibut, which we kept. Lal's 5.5 pound Sand Bass:

The Freedom is running one last trip to San Clemente or San Nicolas tonight, all aboard.

Down South-San Diego and good ole Mexico!
I fished with private boater Bill on Wednesday, 12-28-11 also in drop dead gorgeous conditions. We fished the Finger Bank, Salsapuedes and along the kelp beds on the coast of Baja Mar. We had to work hard for a limit of Reds each, however, all the other species of Rockfish were on a good chew all day. Releasing all our shallow water caught fish; I released 5 and 10 pound Lingcod, to go with Calico Bass, Sugar Bass, Johnny Bass, Chocolate Rockfish and others. It was fantastic fishing and weather. Here is Bill with a big Sheephead:

Myself with a large Red:

Captain Jamie ran a Seasons charter on Monday, 12-26-11 in gorgeous weather and slammed the big Reds. Some pictures:

The Indian is running full day Rockcod trips to the Finger Bank and Points south of the border. They had limits around on Wednesday, 12-28-11, for 22 anglers.
