Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Despite another weekend of breezy conditions, the Offshore fishing was again very good. The one day Sport Boats did not get into the wide open Tuna bites they became accustomed to, yet filled the boat with lots of Yellowtail, some Dorado and Tuna. The 1.5 day trips did far better than single day trips, while 2 day and 3 day trips usually ended up with limits of Yellowfin Tuna, and a good variety of Dorado, Yellowtail, Bluefin Tuna and the occasional Albacore.
As the week progressed and our first storm of the year came through the Tuna counts were fading. Would like to get out one more time myself, however, once again on the weekend and forecasted through early next week is breezy offshore conditions. As the water cools the fish head south, bummer. However, it has a been a banner season for most. Far better fishing this year than the last two years.

An area of concern: I know the Sport Boats need to make a decent living, considering the last few years have been poor at best. I just can't get a good handle on why so many Rat Yellowtail are being caught and killed. The same goes for private boaters, although they do not account that much for the thousand a day that are being caught by the Sporties. These small Yellowtail are next year's crop of 10 to 12 pounders and the following year of 20 to 25 pounders. At least this week a number of boats found the bigger models biting, for example:

Off the Searcher 10-08-12, lots of big Yellowtail:

Off the Ocean Odyssey 10-08-12, all the Yellowtail you wanted:

Angler Pam off the Pacific Dawn 2-day trip over the weekend, with big Bull Dorado:

Angler Kevin fished a 1.5 day trip on the Condor over the weekend and caught limits of Yellowfin Tuna and a few Bluefin Tuna. Some pictures:

There were few private boater boats this week with the best fishing down at the 1010 Trench, some 65 miles south of Point Loma. Mostly the bigger boats ventured as far south as the D220 and west to the 213 Banks, with 80 miles a beginning destination for the 1.5 and longer trips. The inshore banks, Hidden, 302, 371 and 425 are still yielding mostly Rat Yellowtail and a few Dorado, yet not much in the way of any Tuna, although the ¾ day boats found a good school of Bluefin Tuna mixed in with the incredible amount of small Yellowtail remaining in the area near the Hidden Bank.
Here is a picture of Eric with a Bluefin Tuna off the San Diego on Tuesday, 10-09-12:

Private boater Jerry hired Dave Hansen to fish Thursday, 10-11-12, leaving Wednesday evening to go long out of Newport Beach, ending up 100 miles south. They found wide open Yellowtail fishing with a good mix of Yellowfin Tuna and Dorado. Here is Scott's son Rocky with a great mix of fish:

The Ranger 85 returned Friday, 10-12-12 from a 2.5 day trip with 30 anglers catching 22 Bluefin Tuna, 93 Yellowfin Tuna, 128 Yellowtail and18 Dorado.

The Pacific Voyager, returned from a successful 2.5 day trip Monday, 10-08-12 with a great mix of fish: 120 Bluefin Tuna, 118 Yellowfin Tuna and 2 Albacore Tuna.

There has been a small snap on the Yellowtail at Catalina Island this week. The ¾ day boat Enterprise made the run to Catalina on Saturday, 10-06-12 and caught 2 Yellowtail, 38 Sheephead, 137 Whitefish, 154 Rockfish, 1 Bonito, 4 Sculpin, 210 Perch and 1 Cabazon.
There was also a short window of opportunity at San Clemente Island on the Yellowtail, where they bit well most of last week until the weather turned on the weekend. Private boater Glen fished the weekend with friends at the Island and they caught 8 Yellowtail on Saturday and 9 on Sunday. The Fury returned from a 2-day trip, Friday/Saturday, caught 131 Yellowtail and lots of Calico Bass on their trip.

In Santa Monica the 3/4 day boat Tradition had a decent day on their Saturday, 10-06-12 trip catching 10 Calico Bass, 6 Sand Bass, 142 Rockfish, 2 Lingcod, 75 Sculpin, 30 Perch and 2 Cabazon. The New Del Mar had a decent day of Bass fishing on Tuesday, 10-09-12, catching 32 Calico Bass, 21 Sand Bass, 1 Sheephead, 85 Rockfish, 1 Lingcod, 30 Sculpin and 2 Cabazon.

Twilight fishing:
The Freelance fished Sunday evening, 10-08-12 and caught 1 Halibut, 3 Calico Bass, 4 Sand Bass, 18 Rockfish, 81 Sculpin, 12 Yellowfin Croaker and 3 Sargo. Most boats have discontinued twilight trips as the demand has dwindled? The Nautilus fished on Saturday, 10-06-12 in the evening catching 7 Calico Bass, 12 Rockfish, 60 Sculpin (limits) and 4 Sargo.

The Islands

Catalina/Santa Barbara Island!
The Sport King had a good day at the Island on Friday, 10-05-12 catching 2 Yellowtail, 69 Calico Bass, 1 Barracuda, 8 Whitefish, 5 Rockfish and 137 Perch

The Freedom caught 15 Yellowtail, 26 Calico Bass, 6 Barracuda, 3 Sheephead, 7 Whitefish and 73 Perch on their Saturday, 10-06-12 trip.

Down South-San Diego and good ole Mexico!
The ¾ day boats are running offshore to catch mostly Yellowtail and Dorado; however they got a taste of Bluefin Tuna this week to go with the amazing Yellowtail fishing.
The ¾ day boat San Diego out of Seaforth Landing caught 22 Bluefin Tuna, 195 Yellowtail and 11 Dorado on their Tuesday, 10-09-12 trip.

The Mission Belle headed out on Sunday, 10-07-12, and caught 1 Bluefin Tuna, 135 Yellowtail and 12 Dorado.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Despite some very breezy conditions over the weekend, due to Hurricane Miriam, the Offshore fishing was decent for most of those that ventured out into the slop. There was a drop off for some Sport Boats on catching Yellowfin Tuna, a few Do Dos, with a few kelp Paddies loaded with the small Yellowtail and some bigger models. Only an occasional few Bluefin Tuna were found, and the same goes for the Albacore. The 1.5 day trips did far better than single day trips, while 2 day and 3 day trips usually ended up with limits of Tuna to 60 pounds.

A few private boaters braved the nasty seas fishing down at the 1010 Trench, some 65 miles south of Point Loma. If they found the right Kelp Paddy they enjoyed a Bonanza on catching multiple species. Mostly only the bigger boats ventured as far south as the D220 and west to the 213 Banks. The inshore banks, 302, 371 and 425 triangle are still yielding mostly Rat Yellowtail, with a few Dorado, and not much in the way of any Tuna this close to shore. The Hidden Bank yielded a few Yellowfin Tuna on the troll and around the Kelp Paddies, however, no large schools were found.

The weather improved during the week and limits of Yellowfin Tuna again became the rule. Unfortunately the weather forecasted for Saturday through early next week calls for windy conditions again.

The Condor has been tearing them up this year, and returned Friday morning with limits of Yellowfin Tuna, 40 Bluefin Tuna to 40 pounds, plus plenty of Yellowtail and a few Dorado. Some pictures courtesy of Norm:

Here are some pictures courtesy of David of the carnage off the off the Legend, Tuesday, 10-02-12:

Angler Ray chartered the boat Limitless with friends on a 1.5 day trip last week. There were only 4 fishermen on board. They caught school size Yellowfin Tuna throughout the day and continued to look for other species to add to the count. Captain Tom trolled through a big meter mark in the afternoon and Ray's son Tom got bit real good and was in for a long fight. Then Ray and friend Brandon hooked baitfish, fortunately on heavier line. All three landed Yellowfin Tuna over 50 pounds with the biggest weighing in at 59 pounds. Some pictures:

Private boater Brandon fished on his boat with friends, on Thursday, 10-04-12 and they caught limits of Yellowfin Tuna, several Bluefin Tuna to 30 pounds and some big Dorado to 20 pounds,at the 213 and 1010 trench. The bonanza:

Private boater Shawn fished on his boat with friends, Sunday, 09-30-12, and they caught limits of Yellowfin Tuna and some Dorado in nasty conditions. A couple of pictures:

Private boater Alex fished on his boat with his wife and Dad, Sunday, 09-30-12, and they caught 4 Dorado to 20 pounds and 8 Yellowfin Tuna in rough seas. A couple of pictures:

Private boater Lal fished with Japan Ron on Tuesday, 10-02-12 and found the Sand and Calico Bass on the chew to four pounds. Some pictures:

The Toronado out of Pierpoint Landing ran a trip on Friday, 09-28-12 and caught 1 Bluefin Tuna, 1 Yellowfin Tuna, 27 Yellowtail and 10 Dorado.

In Santa Monica the ½ day boat Redondo Special had a decent day on their Saturday, 09-29-12 trip catching 1 White Seabass, 17 Calico Bass, 3 Sheephead, 24 Rockfish, 3 Lingcod, 1 Sculpin, 7 Perch and 2 Cabazon.

Out of San Pedro, the ½ day boat Monte Carlo had decent afternoon, Monday, 10-01-12 catching 3 Sheephead, 66 Bocaccio, 167 Rockfish, 8 Sculpin, 45 Sand Dab and 46 Red Snapper.

Out of Newport Beach, the Amigo fished on Saturday, 09-29-12 catching 2 Bluefin Tuna, 1 Yellowfin Tuna, 5 Albacore Tuna, 58 Yellowtail and 3 Dorado.

Twilight fishing: The Freelance fished Sunday evening, 09-30-12 and caught 1 Calico Bass, 5 Sand Bass, 17 Rockfish, 74 Sculpin and 3 Sargo . The Nautilus fished on Saturday, 09-29-12 and caught 6 Calico Bass, 7 Sand Bass, 17 Rockfish, 80 Sculpin and 2 Cabazon.

The Islands

Catalina/Santa Barbara Island!

The Sport King had a good day at the Island on Wednesday, 10-03-12, catching 75 Calico Bass, 24 Sheephead, 12 Whitefish, 11 Rockfish, 1 Bonito, 102 Perch and 12 Red Snapper.

The Pursuit out of 22nd St. Landing, ran to the Island on Wednesday, 10-03-12, with 40 anglers catching 33 Calico Bass,35 Sheephead, 30 Whitefish,40 Rockfish, 404 Perch and 11 Sargo.

San Clemente Island!
The Fury out of Dana Wharf fished on Saturday, 09-29-12 with 7 anglers catching 24 Yellowtail, 19 Calico Bass and 1 Sheephead.

Down South-San Diego and good ole Mexico! No recent reports about the Yellowtail fishing at the Coronado Islands, which has been very good for private boaters. The ¾ day boats are running offshore to catch mostly Yellowtail and Dorado, as the Tuna are a bit far south to run to.

The ¾ day boat San Diego out of Seaforth Landing caught 125 Yellowtail and 4 Dorado on their Thursday, 10-04-12 trip.

The Mission Belle headed out on Wednesday, 10-03-12, and caught 95 Yellowtail and 12 Dorado.

The ¾ day boat Malahini caught 71 Yellowtail and 5 Dorado on their trip on Wednesday, 10-03-12.

I fished down south out of Las Salinas Wednesday, 10-03-12, with friend Bill Fisher, and we slammed the Lingcod to 12 pounds, Reds and other Rockfish. We intended to run offshore, however, a heavy fog bank without radar kept us near shore. Some pictures:

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Fishing has been just short of sensational Offshore with most boats, private and Sport Boats catching limits of Yellowfin Tuna, then add some Bluefin Tuna, along with lots of Yellowtail and Dorado. if you run the distance of 60 to 75 miles. If you find the right Kelp Paddy, you could soon realize the Bonanza of all four species. Adding to the thrill on a few trips is finding big Albacore to 40 pounds.

The Sport Boat industry has needed this late season run, after several very lean years, where many boats exchanged hands, and some excellent captains left the area. Private boaters have also feasted this year on shorter runs locally for Yellowtail and Dorado, while longer runs have provided a great mix of Tuna and Tails. On Friday, 09-28-12 most boats called in with full limits of Yellowfin Tuna for the day, plus a nice complement of Yellowtail and Dorado.

I know everyone is hopeful the fishing season will extend into November, I sure do? Considering Hurricane Miriam is pushing more warm water up from the Baja Coast, that wish might be granted. Meanwhile this storm is going to put the kabash on this weekend's fishing with high surf and winds, negating my planned repeat to last Sunday's wide open bite on a private boat. The open water fishing will still be accomplished, however, with the winds and heavier swells, finding Kelp Paddies will be a challenge.

I had the privilege to be invited on the luxury Yacht "Bad to the Bone" fishing on Sunday, 09-23-12. We started the day just south of the D220 at 74 miles from Point Loma. After a couple of stops on the troll for Yellowfin Tuna we found the Magic Kelp Paddy and proceeded to catch fish off it for nearly three hours. All four species were caught off this Kelp Paddy, some pictures of first Yellowfin Tuna, then Bluefin Tuna:

According to angler Erick their trip on the Pride Wednesday, 09-26-12 was wide open on the Yellowfin Tuna, with 48 Yellowtail, a few Dorado and a couple of Albacore mixed in. Some pictures:

The Aztec, on a 1.5 day trip that returned Thursday, 09-27-12 with 58 Bluefin Tuna, 130 Yellowfin Tuna (limits), 40 Yellowtail and 24 Dorado. Pictures courtesy of Ray:

Angler Mark fished with friends on the Pacific Queen on Sunday and caught some Yellowfin and Bluefin Tuna, with plenty of Yellowtail and Dorado. Some pictures:

Locally there are still few and far between days where kelp paddies are found holding fish, and that is if you can find one? Yet occasionally the Mother Load Kelp Paddy is found. Do Dos and Tails remain the primary target of the ¾ day and one day boats locally, who head offshore rather than settle for Sculpin and Rockfishing.

On some days the ¾ day boats out of Newport Beach and Long Beach found the right kelp paddy. For example the Freelance on Monday, 09-24-12 caught 33 Yellowtail and 2 Dorado. Out of the same landing as the Freelance the Bongo's III on Wednesday, 09-26-12, caught 45 Yellowtail and 3 Dorado.

The Cortez Bank has been yielding solid counts of Bluefin Tuna and the following boats have been having great success on their 1.5 day trips.
The Toronado out of Pierpoint Landing ran a 1.5 day trip returning on Monday, 09-24-12, and caught 44 Bluefin Tuna, 8 Yellowfin Tuna, 1 Calico Bass, 45 Sheephead, 60 Whitefish, 100 Rockfish and 100 Bonito.
The Freedom out of 22nd St. Landing ran a 1.5 day trip and caught 115 Bluefin Tuna, 31 Sheephead, 65 Whitefish, 25 Rockfish and 10 Sculpin returning on Monday, 09-24-12.
Locally the targeted fishing remains Sculpin and Rockfish, with a few Bass mixed in.
In Santa Monica the ½ day boat Redondo Special had a good day on their Thursday, 09-27-12 pm trip catching 3 White Seabass, 21 Calico Bass, 3 Sand Bass, 8 Sheephead, 11 Rockfish, 2 Sculpin, 15 Perch and 1 Cabazon. Also on their Monday trip they caught limits of Calico Bass (70) for 7 anglers.

Out of Long Beach, according to Japan Ron, the ¾ day Victory had a good day of fishing on Wednesday, 09-26-12, catching Big Reds, lots of Sculpin, and a few Sheephead. Ron also fished Tuesday with Lal on the private boat "Rubber Ducky" and they caught Rockfish and Bass along with this Dandy 7 pound Halibut: Some pictures from Japan Ron:

Angler Hakeli fished on the City of Long Beach ½ day boat on Sunday, 09-23-12. They caught easy limits of quality Sculpin and some Reds and Sheephead. Some pictures:

Out of Newport Beach, the Amigo ended a 2-day trip on Sunday, 09-23-12 catching 2 Bluefin Tuna, 1 Yellowfin Tuna, 5 Albacore Tuna, 58 Yellowtail and 3 Dorado.

Twilight fishing: The Freelance fished Sunday evening, 09-23-12 and caught 5 Calico Bass, 2 Sand Bass, 24 Rockfish and 175 Sculpin.

The Islands

Catalina/Santa Barbara Island!
The Sport King had a good day at the Island on Tuesday, 09-25-12 catching 115 Calico Bass, 13 Sheephead, 10 Rockfish and 40 Perch.
The Pursuit out of 22nd St. Landing, ran to the Island on Sunday, 09-23-12, with 29 anglers catching 1 Yellowtail, 54 Calico Bass, 33 Sheephead, 30 Whitefish, 50 Bocaccio, 103 Rockfish, 158 Perch and 10 Red Snapper.

San Clemente Island!
The Fury out of Dana Wharf fished on Tuesday, 09-25-12 with 21 anglers catching 150 Calico Bass, 13 Barracuda and 2 Sheephead.

Down South-San Diego and good ole Mexico!
The fishing at the Coronado Islands has been very quiet as of late. The ¾ day boats are running offshore to catch Tuna and Tails as the Visa mess is still up in the air? The last few days the ¾ day boats have found limit style fishing on the Dorado also with lots of Yellowtail being caught offshore on the kelp Paddies.

The ¾ day boat San Diego out of Seaforth Landing caught 5 Bluefin Tuna, 8 Yellowfin Tuna, 41 Yellowtail and 7 Dorado on their Tuesday, 09-25-12 trip.

The Mission Belle headed out on Tuesday, 09-25-12, and caught 67 Yellowtail and 20 Dorado.

The ¾ day boat Malahini caught 1 Bluefin Tuna, 59 Yellowtail and 5 Dorado on their trip on Thursday, 09-27-12.

All comments and suggestions welcomed!

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

And the beat goes on, as the Offshore action remained very steady, with good scores on Yellowfin Tuna, lots of Do Dos and Tails, occasional good schools of Bluefin Tuna of which some were the tackle buster 60 to 100 pound variety, with some decent scores on Albacore. Open water jig strikes were common and the Kelp Paddy fishing could turn into a smorgasbord of all of the above species off of the one Kelp.

In the last several weeks the private boater has enjoyed great fishing down at the 1010 Trench, some 65 miles south of Point Loma. Tuna were also found at the D220 and 213 Banks. The inshore banks, Hidden, 302, 371 and 425 are still yielding mostly Rat Yellowtail and a few Dorado, yet not much in the way of any Tuna. Water temps range anywhere from the high 60's on up to 75 degrees, depending upon the area.

The Legend was one of the lucky boats to find the big bruising Bluefin Tuna, along with limits of Yellowfin Tuna. Some pictures:

The Top Gun 80 returned Monday, 09-17-12 from a whale of a 2.5 day trip with 25 anglers catching 45 Bluefin Tuna, 250 Yellowfin Tuna (full 2-day limits), 4 Albacore Tuna, 50 Yellowtail and 50 Dorado.

I was lucky enough to hitch a ride with Bill on his 26' Striper, fishing Sunday, 09-16-12. Leaving Point Loma we found the going tough, with bumpy seas and 15+ knot winds. We found some dandy Kelp Paddies, mostly holding Rat Yellowtail, and a few small Dorado as we passed the upper part of the Hidden Bank. We arrived late to the party at the 1010 Trench, 10 am, having to listen on the radio about how good the fishing was. Nevertheless, we managed to catch four Yellowfin Tuna to 25 pounds and an 18 pound Bluefin Tuna, with some big boys lost to pulled hooks. A couple of pictures:

Private boater Ed fished on his boat with friends, Sunday, 09-16-12, and they caught limits of Yellowfin Tuna to 25 pounds, a few Bluefin Tuna to 35 pounds and huge Dorado to 45 pounds, for 3 anglers, A couple of pictures:

According to angler Ted his one day trip on the Pride Monday, 09-17-12 was wide open on the Yellowfin Tuna, (limits), with a few Dorado and Yellowtail mixed in.

The Aztec, returned from a successful 1.5 day trip Monday, 09-17-12 with a great mix of fish: 9 Bluefin Tuna, 33 Yellowfin Tuna, 16 Albacore Tuna, 120 Yellowtail and 14 Dorado.

For most of the last several weeks not many kelp paddies in the US were holding fish, however this week that all changed. A number of times the Mother Load Kelp Paddy is found, as Jonathan and his wife Jenn went hunting last weekend, starting at the 277, finding little and continuing further south some 20 miles before coming across the Magic Paddy. Wow it was as good a yield on huge Dorado as I have seen reported this year, regardless of where, US or Mexican waters. They spent hours on the same Kelp Paddy, enjoying a steady bite on Big Bull Dorado to well over 30 pounds, and lots of big Hens too. They kept 10 and released more than that many. Some pictures:

Private boater Joe fished on his boat, Tuesday, 09-18-12, out of Dana Point, and caught lots of Dorado, releasing all but four, as on the way home from Catalina, he found the Magic Paddy. Some pictures:

Most of the ¾ day boats out of Newport Beach and Long Beach had long since given up on kelp paddy fishing and returned to targeting Rockfish and Sculpin, however, this week they are again running offshore, however, the results were not all that great. Here is a nice Dorado caught off the Gail Force on a 3/4 day trip:

To get in on the Tuna, it is necessary to book a 1.5 to 2 day trip out of these northern landings to reach the fish.
There has been a small snap on the Yellowtail and White Seabass at Catalina Island this week.

The Toronado out of Pierpoint Landing ran a trip on Sunday, 09-16-12 and caught 3 Bluefin Tuna, 91 Yellowtail and 6 Dorado.
The Freedom out of 22nd St. Landing caught 62 Bluefin Tuna on their trip Monday, 09-17-12.

In Santa Monica the ½ day boat Redondo Special had a decent day on their Saturday, 09-5-12 pm trip catching 2 Yellowtail, 5 Calico Bass, 1 Sand Bass, 2 Sheephead, 9 Rockfish, 3 Sculpin and 11 Perch.

Out of San Pedro, the ½ day boat Monte Carlo had decent afternoon, Thursday, 09-20-12 on the Lingcod and Red Snapper, catching 5 Lingcod, 1 Calico Bass, 9 Sheephead, 13 Rockfish, 11 Perch, 36 Red Snapper and 1 Cabazon. Some pictures:

Out of Dana Point, the Fury ran an offshore trip on Tuesday, 09-18-12 and caught 1 Yellowtail, 30 Dorado, 48 Calico Bass and 5 Perch.

Out of Newport Beach, the Amigo ended a 2-day trip on Saturday, 09-15-12 catching 13 Bluefin Tuna, 1 Yellowfin Tuna, 25 Albacore Tuna, 30 Yellowtail and 15 Dorado for 14 anglers. The Freelance fished offshore Tuesday, 09-18-12 and caught 14 Dorado, 3 Calico Bass, 2 Sheephead, 2 Rockfish, 2 Sculpin and 45 Perch.

Twilight fishing: The Freelance fished Sunday evening, 09-16-12 and caught 8 Calico Bass, 20 Rockfish, 120 Sculpin and 1 Cabazon. Most boats have discontinued twilight trips as the demand has dwindled?

The Islands

Catalina/Santa Barbara Island!
The Sport King had a good day at the Island on Monday, 09-17-12 catching 4 Yellowtail, 42 Calico Bass, 15 Barracuda, 12 Sheephead and 110 Perch.
The Pursuit out of 22nd St. Landing, ran to the Island on Wednesday, 09-19-12, with 40 anglers catching 11 White Seabass, 100 Calico Bass, 31 Sheephead and 106 Perch.

San Clemente Island!
The Fury out of Dana Wharf fished on Monday, 09-17-12 with 26 anglers catching 211 Calico Bass, 13 Barracuda, 1 Sheephead and 7 Perch.
The Freedom caught 40 Calico Bass, 1 Barracuda, 31 Sheephead, 1 Whitefish, 34 Rockfish, 1 Sculpin and 63 Perch on their Saturday, 09-15-12 trip.

The ¾ day boat San Diego out of Seaforth Landing caught 100 Yellowtail 44 Dorado on their Thursday, 09-20-12 trip.

The Mission Belle headed out on Monday, 09-17-12, and caught 80 Yellowtail and 21 Dorado.

The ¾ day boat Malahini caught 45 Yellowtail and 22 Dorado on their trip on Thursday, 09-20-12.

Charter Master Jamie, of Seasons Sportfishing fished offshore on the weekend and caught an Offshore Grand Slam of Bluefin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Albacore, Yellowtail and Dorado. Some pictures:

Private boater Vince fished on friend Dave's boat, Tuesday, 09-18-12, and they caught a bunch of quality Yellowtail and two Albacore to 30 pounds:

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

In recent weeks the Private Boater has enjoyed some of the best fishing in three years. The Offshore action has provided opportunities to catch-Yellowfin Tuna, Bluefin Tuna, Do Dos and Tails. The weather has been exceptional for most of the last two weeks, leading to water temps as high as 75 degrees, yikes, Cabo eat your heart out!
An enormous amount of Dorado (Mahi Mahi), are being seen and caught from 150 miles south of the border to 75 miles north of the border. In fact the ½ day boat Patriot caught some Dorado off of Newport Beach recently. The Yellowtail fishing on the Kelp Paddies have been off the charts in many areas.
The secret of successful fishing is finding the Mother Load Kelp Paddy. You find it, and they bite and everyone goes home happy. Locally there are many kelp paddies that are not holding fish, yet there are a bunch of paddies that yield huge results. So don't give up, keep on looking, you may just find that Mother Load Kelp Paddy.

Where ever it was caught, it's a keeper?

Now that's a big Tail:

Speaking of private boater trips, my good friend Lal went fishing on the luxurious yacht ''Salt Fever" with his son and friends. The seven anglers caught 34 Bluefin Tuna over the weekend to 41 pounds, with most of the tuna over 30 pounds. Some pictures:

Well not to be denied, I went fishing with Captain Chris on his luxurious yacht a 50' Viking, "Bad To The Bone" on Sunday 08-19-12. The six of us found the Bluefin Tuna on a serious chew. Some pictures:

Private boaters have been combing the seas from 50 miles south of the border and all the way up to making runs northwest out of Newport Beach. We are all hoping the fish put on a show similar to four years ago, when a run of 10 miles out of either Long Beach or Santa Monica Bay yielded Kelp Paddies loaded with Dorado and Yellowtail. Then the Yellowfin Tuna moved in under the porpoise and it was game on for 30 to 40 pound Tuna.
Angler Tunahead Ron fished the Condor on a 1.5 day trip Wed.-08-22-12 and slammed the fish again. His buddy was hot, catching an offshore slam, Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado and Yellowtail. Some pictures:

My good friend Rick fished a 2 day trip on the Pride, and loaded the boat with some Bluefin Tuna, yellowtail and Dorado over the weekend. Some pictures:

The Aztec, on its latest 1.5 day trip, which will return Friday morning, 08-24-12, caught 36 Yellowtail, 43 Bluefin Tuna, 38 Dorado and 2 Yellowfin Tuna to 45 pounds.
Angler Raul fished with friends on the Sea Adventure II on Wed.-08-22-12 and caught Dorado, Yellowtail and Bluefin Tuna. Friend Maria caught her first ever Dorado:

The Freedom out of 22nd St. Landing caught 21 Bluefin Tuna, 62 Yellowtail and 132 Dorado on a 2-day trip.

The Barracuda fishing is all but over for now, with Rockfish, Sculpin, Sand Bass and Calico Bass the targeted species. The ½ day boat Southern Cal had a great day of Sand Bass and Barracuda fishing on Wednesday, 08-15-12 with 46 Sand Bass and 53 Barracuda caught. While the ¾ day Victory managed 69 Sand Bass, 28 Barracuda and 150 Sculpin. Some pictures from Japan Ron:

The Freelance fished Sunday evening, 08-19-12 and caught 220 Sculpin and 30 Sand Dab. The Southern Cal fished an evening run on Monday, 08-20-12 for 35 Sand Bass and 11 Sculpin for only 11 anglers.

In Santa Monica Bay
Jackpot Jimmy got out on the ¾ day boat Tradition on Saturday, 08-18-12 and they caught some huge Salmon Grouper, Sheephead, Sand Bass and Jimmy caught a 13 pound Halibut:

Newport Beach and Dana Point. There has been some excellent Sculpin fishing with some good scores on the Bass. For example the Freelance caught 290 Sculpin and 100 Sand Dab on their ¾ day trip, Sunday, 08-19-12.

A couple of White Seabass have also shown up in the counts.

Long Beach and San Pedro
There was some great Sculpin and Sand Bass fishing during the week, when not targeting the Barracuda which have been MIA most of the week. The Victory according to Ron caught easy limits of Sculpin and half limits of Sand Bass on their Wed-08-22-12 trip.

The Yellowtail fishing at the Coronado Islands has been very good for private boaters. The ¾ day boats are running offshore to catch Tuna and Tails as the Visa mess is still up in the air? The last few days the ¾ day boats have found limit style fishing on the Dorado with some Yellowtail being caught offshore on the kelp Paddies.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Tuna, Tuna, Tuna, Do Dos and Tails. The weekend weather did little to help the offshore performance; however, sensational weather during the week provided excellent fishing on the Bluefin Tuna, and the bigger Yellowtail being caught off the Kelp Paddies. There are several areas holding Bluefin Tuna, one area remains below 120 miles and another between 70 and 80 miles. Some Bluefin are biting even closer to home, around 30 miles from Point Loma, where the ¾ day boats have successfully fished them.

More and more Dorado are being seen and caught, while some big scores on Yellowfin Tuna were reported in the over 100 mile areas. For a lot of us the best news was some solid fishing on 1 day trips, as many anglers cannot get multiple days off to go fishing. Although your best bet on achieving a solid catch ratio is to book a 2.5 trip, which allows the boat to fish until dark on both days, and wake up in the zone on the second day.

For example: the First String docked Thursday morning, returning from a 2.5 day trip that slammed both Yellowfin and Bluefin Tuna, full limits on both species for 26 anglers, 520 Tuna in all, wow!
I fished on the Aztec, on a 1 day trip that left Tuesday night and returned late Wednesday evening. Our count consisted of 46 Yellowtail, most in the 18 to 22 pound range, with a 30 pounder taking Jackpot. We also caught five Bluefin Tuna to 25 pounds and one Dorado. The Aztec did a quick turnaround and ran another 1 day trip on Thursday, catching 40 Bluefin Tuna and 1 Albacore, yep that rare Tuna, which must have been lost? Some pictures:

Captain Adam took a charter group out of Oceanside to fish the local banks of the 181 and 182 on 08-01-12 and they caught Yellowtail and Dorado off the Kelp Paddies:

It has been fairly quiet at San Clemente Island with a few big Yellowtail being caught on most trips, and occasionally they find a school of biting White Seabass. The same remains true for Catalina, very quiet, with decent Calico Bass fishing in both areas.
The Barracuda come, the Barracuda go. Recently they returned in a fury! On any given day the local Sand Bass and Calico Bass fishing is excellent, which depends on conditions, current, water temp, etc.
The Mardiosa managed to catch 3 White Seabass, 45 Calico Bass, 2 Barracuda, 2 Sheephead, 2 Black Sea Bass released and 3 Sargo on their trip Monday, 07-30-12.

Limits of Calico Bass plus some decent White Seabass were caught on the Dreamer, Monday, 07-30-12:

The Dreamer caught 8 White Seabass Friday morning, August 03, 2012, and were still fishing.

The Yellowtail fishing at the Coronado Islands was very good on Saturday, 07-28-12, and then word came down that the ¾ day boats would not be allowed to fish the Islands unless they first checked in with immigration in Ensenada, which is ludicrous. There were reports of private boaters being asked to leave the area, and most private boaters are reluctant to return until this latest mess is cleared up. No updates yet.

Generally the best Sand Bass fishing is in the evening on the Twilight runs, although lately it has been hit and miss with more Sculpin caught than Bass.

In Santa Monica Bay
Most of the boats have resorted to catching Rockfish, with scattered counts of Barracuda and Bass.

Private boater Jones fished in the bay Saturday, 07-28-12 and caught this huge Sheephead:

Newport Beach and Dana Point. Most of the Sport Boats have found some decent Calico Bass fishing, along with Sculpin and Rockfish.

Private boater Joe fished out of Newport on Monday, 07-30-12 and caught 4 Halibut, with only one legal:

Long Beach and San Pedro
Great Barracuda fishing most of the week and good scores on the Twilight runs for Sand Bass. The Enterprise had back to back days of over 200 Barracuda on Wed. and Thur.

Private boater Lal and Japan Ron got a thrill when Lal hooked and released this 50 pound Black Seabass:

Lal with a legal Lingcod released:

The Islands

Catalina/Santa Barbara Island!
Angler TV Dan fished the Outrider out of 22nd St. Landing, on Tuesday, 07-31-12, and they caught some Barracuda, Calico Bass, Whitefish, Sheephead and Perch. Jackpot was this dandy Halibut:

The Freedom still catching White Seabass at the Islands, with 15 caught on Sunday, 07-29-12:

The Pursuit out of 22nd St. Landing, ran to the Island on Tuesday, 07-31-12, with 19 anglers catching 150 Calico Bass, 20 Sheephead, 30 Whitefish and 150 Perch.

San Clemente Island!
Very Quiet!

Down South-San Diego and good ole Mexico!
Private boater Lee fished with friends near Ensenada offshore and caught several Yellowtail and Dorado off the Kelp Paddies, Thursday, 08-02-12. Here is a picture of a big Yellowtail and the Kill bag:

Private boater Greg fished with friends at the 425 and within 5 miles of the islands, when they found a Kelp Paddy holding Yellowtail, Tuesday, 07-31-12 and caught five including this big guy:

Private boater Mike fished with friends in the Bay, Wednesday, 08-01-12 and caught his first legal Halibut, weighing 13 pounds:

The ¾ day boat San Diego out of Seaforth Landing caught 13 Yellowtail and 15 Bluefin Tuna on their Monday, 07-30-12 trip.

Charter Master Jamie fished the Islands on Saturday, 07-28-12 and caught some dandy Yellowtail:

Private boater Bill fished with friends at the Coronado Islands, Saturday, 07-28-12 and caught three big Yellowtail:

Private boater Bill fished with friends at the Coronado Islands, Saturday, 07-28-12 and caught Yellowtail, then ran offshore and caught a Mako and Dorado:

Private boater Jesse fished with Dad and friends at the Coronado Islands, Sunday, 07-29-12 and caught eight big Yellowtail:

Private boater Lal fished with friends over the weekend, targeting White Seabass at La Jolla. They were skunked on the Ghosts, however, they had a by catch of a 24 pound Yellowtail and a 34 pound Halibut:

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The offshore scene was once again hindered by the winds, as the Yellowfin Tuna all but disappeared in the counts, while the good counts on the Bluefin Tuna were all over the map, some good scores in one day range, while most of the better counts came on 2+ day trips.. The Yellowtail being caught on kelp paddies still range from 6 to 12 pounds, with more 15 to 25 pound fish being caught. The excitement of Dorado being caught so early in the year faded somewhat, with a few caught here and there, with mostly small fish.

Private boater Beau fished with friends over the weekend out of Mission Bay offshore in US waters and found the Yellowtail and small Dorado on the chew:

Private boater Garrison fished with friends on Wed. 07-25-12 out of Shelter Island, past the 238 and found the Bluefin Tuna on the chew:

The San Clemente Island Yellowtail bite has fizzled with a only a few fish being caught on most trips to the Island. Although, these Yellowtail remain big, and are tackle busters, so bring heavier gear.

The local Sand Bass fishing has been awesome at times, with some Calico Bass mixed in, with a good mix of Barracuda being caught, both in Santa Monica, and out of Long Beach.

The Yellowtail fishing at the Coronado Islands is very consistent, and the savvy private boaters are putting the wood to the big Tails, which are averaging 20 to 30 pounds, so use at least 30 pound line.
Private boater Lal fished with friend Richie on Wed., 07-25-12 at the Coronado's and they managed to catch 5 Yellowtail out of 11 hookups. Seals and getting smoked on the rocks accounted for the casualties.

The Sand Bass fishing has been very good on the Twilight runs, with decent schools of Barracuda mixed in.

Twilight fishing:
The Enterprise fished on Thursday, 07-26-12, and caught 77 Barracuda and 53 Sand Bass. The Nautilus out of fished on Wednesday, 07-25-12, and caught 84 Sand Bass and 6 Barracuda. The Freelance out of Davey's Locker ran a trip last night Thursday, 07-26-12, and they caught 220 Sand Bass.

In Santa Monica Bay
The ¾ day boat Tradition found the Barracuda on a serious chew on Sunday, as they caught 290, plus some other Halibut and Bass during the day and again had a great Twilight run. Pictures courtesy of Jackpot Jimmy:

The 1/2 day boat Redondo caught 212 Barracuda fishing on Sunday, 07-22-12. The ¾ day Spitfire caught 155 Barracuda fishing on Sunday, while the ½ day boat New Del Mar caught 600 Barracuda.

Newport Beach and Dana Point.
Private boater Joe fished with his friend out of Dana Point, Wed.-7-25-12 and found the offshore Kelp Paddies empty despite great looking blue water and 70 degree temps. They moved inshore and caught a few of these:

Long Beach and San Pedro
The Barracuda fishing comes and goes, and there were good scores on both the daytime and Twilight runs for Sand Bass. A number of Sport boats had counts over 200 on the Sand Bass during the week and over last weekend.

Angler Michael fished on the ½ day boat Matt Walsh on Sunday, 07-22-12. They caught a great variety of fish.

The Islands

Catalina/Santa Barbara Island!
Calico Bass fishing at the Island is excellent and a few Bonito and Barracuda have shown up in the counts lately. For example the Sport King on a ¾ day trip caught 1 Halibut, 112 Calico Bass, 3 Barracuda, 2 Whitefish, 5 Rockfish, 180 Perch and 6 Sargo on their Tuesday, 07-24-12 trip to the Island.

The Pursuit out of 22nd St. Landing, ran to the Island on Wednesday, 07-25-12, with 38 anglers catching 89 Calico Bass, 22 Sheephead, 35 Whitefish, 90 Bocaccio (limits), 110 Rockfish, 3 Sculpin, 210 Perch and 15 Red Snapper.

San Clemente Island!
The San Clemente Island Yellowtail bite continues to produce huge Yellowtail to 50 pounds, and many fish are being lost, as these fish are tackle busters, so bring heavier gear. The Calico Bass fishing is heating up and there are some nice schools of Barracuda running around the Island. Also a few White Seabass are being landed daily.
Private boater Daniel caught this Yellowtail at the Island Saturday, 07-21-12, on his friend's boat:

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The offshore scene shows considerable improvement over the weekend, as the Yellowfin Tuna moved in to share the spotlight with the Bluefin Tuna. Although most of the Yellowtail being caught range from 6 to 12 pounds, a new area of Kelp Paddies holding fish were found that yielded plenty of 15 to 25 pound fish, adding to quality being caught.
Angler Zane was on a 3 day trip on the First String over the weekend and they found the Tuna to be big and plentiful. Some pictures:

Angler Roger was on a 2.5 day trip on the Sea Adventure 80 over the weekend and they caught some Bluefin and Yellowfin Tuna to 48 pounds. Some pictures:

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The offshore scene improved somewhat over the weekend, and during the week as winds subsided, although Saturday still yielded winds from 12 to 20 knots. There were only small counts on the Bluefin Tuna, unless you were on a 3 day trip or longer. Most of the Yellowtail being caught range from 6 to 12 pounds, with an occasional bigger fish to 20 pounds. The area of Kelp Paddies holding fish are from 100 to 120 miles south of the border, with a few Kelp Paddies located between 80 and 100 miles. The Bluefin that are biting are being found at least 130 miles south and closer to 150 miles, although Bluefin have been seen as close as 30 miles from Point Loma, although only a few have been caught?

Angler John was on a 2 day trip on the Polaris Supreme over the weekend and they were fortunate to get on several schools of Bluefin Tuna. The first school yielded seven Tuna in the 30 to 50 pound range, while the second school consisted of larger Tuna from 50 to 76 pounds, with some bigger boys lost to tackle issues. John caught three Bluefin Tuna including this jackpot 76 pounder:

Another angler with a 50 pound Bluefin Tuna:

I went fishing on a 1.5 day on the Aztec, that left Friday night and returned early Sunday morning. At about 7:30 am we stopped on our first Kelp Paddy of the day at around 100 miles, which was loaded with Yellowtail. We landed 55 Yellowtail off this Paddy to 12 pounds.

We spent the rest of the day looking for Bluefin, turning north after we spent some time in the 115 to 120 mile range, with only a few sonar marks found for our efforts. We scratched up limits of Yellowtail throughout the day; with this Jackpot 20 pound Tail being caught by angler Nick:

Angler Dave fished with his wife on the Intrepid on a 3 day trip, which caught 53 Bluefin Tuna to over 70 pounds. His wife placed second in the Jackpot with a 71 pound Bluefin Tuna:

Angler Tim fished on the Islander on a 1.5 day trip on Tuesday, 07-10-12 and caught limits of Yellowtail. Some pictures:

The San Clemente Island Yellowtail bite is consistent with a few fish to double digits on most trips to the Island. These Yellowtail are big, and are tackle busters, so bring heavier gear. The same kind of off and on fishing remains true for Catalina, with very good Calico Bass fishing daily.
Local Sand Bass and Calico Bass fishing picked back up early this week, as did the Barracuda bite, which heated back up both in Santa Monica, and out of Long Beach.
The Mardiosa managed to catch 3 White Seabass on their trip yesterday, Thursday, 07-12-12.

Private boater Jeff fished with friends on a 2-day trip over the weekend and destroyed the White Seabass at the Islands. Some pictures:

Private boater Todd fished with his friends on Saturday, 07-07-12 at the Coronado Islands and caught six Yellowtail out of seven hookups.

The Condor fished a 1.5 day trip on July 12th catching 71 Yellowtail.

The Monte Carlo out of LA Harbor Landing ran a trip on Saturday, 07-07-12, and caught 133 Sand Bass and 3 Sculpin.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The offshore scene was brutal over the weekend, suffering from 20 to 25 knot winds most of the time. On Wednesday, conditions improved, and there were some good counts on the Bluefin Tuna, with a decent mix of better grade Yellowtail. Fortunately some of the Yellowtail are increasing in size from what was mostly 3 to 10 pound fish being caught. Most fish are still being caught from 100 to 120 miles south of the border, down off the beach below Ensenada and near San Martin Island.
The San Clemente Island Yellowtail has been hit and miss since the weather turned. The same remains true for Catalina, just when the Yellowtail began to show up, it was shut down by the conditions.
Sand Bass and Calico Bass fishing has slowed down, as they concentrate on the Long Beach Barracuda bite, which has improved all week.
The White Seabass Island bite comes and goes with some good days mixed in.
The Mardiosa managed to catch 7 White Seabass, 31 Calico Bass, 10 Barracuda and 2 Sheephead on their trip yesterday, Thursday, 07-05-12.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The San Clemente Island Yellowtail bit good on Sunday, then the weather turned, and the bite became a slow pick.
Sand Bass and Calico Bass fishing is up and down, with good counts on selected days and boats. The Long Beach Barracuda bite turned into a run and gun style of fishing, chasing schools of Barracuda off the diving birds.

The White Seabass Island bite improved on Sunday, and then faded out The Coastal Tanker bite on the White Seabass has all but died, with only a few fish caught. There were also fewer reports of Halibut being caught along the coast. The weather is keeping a lot of anglers off the water, although it was nice a few days during the week. Water temps declined 8 to 10 degrees locally at one point.

Vick Sommers with possible World Record 66 pound Coastal Tanker White Seabass caught on 8 pound test line:

The Dreamer pulled another rabbit out of the hat catching limits of White Seabass (24) for their eight anglers on Sunday, 06-24-12. No further reports due to poor weather?

If you could find a kelp paddy holding Yellowtail in the high seas, they caught 50 to 100 Yellowtail, with only a handful of Bluefin Tuna mixed in. Most fish are being caught from 100 to 120 miles south of the border, way out west.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Finally the San Clemente Island Yellowtail made a better showing over the weekend, and the first few days of the week, however strong winds have negatively affected that bite.

Private boater Brandon fished Catalina Island on Saturday, 06-16-12 with friends and caught very little beyond some Calico Bass, then headed to San Clemente Island Saturday night, waking up to good conditions on the back side, they caught a nice variety of fish, including this 8+ pound Calico Bass:

And this dandy Cali:

They then found some big Yellowtail on the chew:

Sand Bass fishing dipped a little bit with some early of the week winds and drop in water temps, however, on Wednesday the Bass went back on the chew, as the Enterprise had limits of both Sand Bass (410) and Sculpin (205). The City of Long Beach caught 310 Sand Bass, while the Victory added 258 Sand Bass to the dock totals. The Barracuda bite faded after good fishing over the weekend most of the week until on Thursday they returned.

The White Seabass Island bite improved on Saturday, and all anglers were able to take advantage of the change in limits on June 15 of three White Seabass each. Several boats reported limits for everyone aboard. The Coastal Tanker bite on the White Seabass came to a screeching halt. There were also fewer reports of Halibut being caught along the coast.

The Dreamer hit the Mother load over the weekend catching limits of White Seabass (18) for their six anglers. They followed that trip up on Tuesday with another 18 White Seabass. Some pictures:

The Mardiosa managed to catch 1 Yellowtail, 4 White Seabass, 60 Calico Bass, 15 Barracuda and 4 Sheephead on their trip Saturday, 06-16-12 and on Wednesday, 06-20-12 at the Islands they caught 1 Yellowtail, 3 White Seabass, 34 Calico Bass, 12 Barracuda and 2 Sheephead.

The Coronado Islands and Rockpile are still yielding Yellowtail, although the counts remain under ten fish on most boats.

Angler Mike fished the Aztec on a 3/4 day trip Tuesday, 06-19-12. They caught a bunch of Barracuda, Rockfish and 7 Yellowtail as Captain Mikey stopped on a school of breezing Yellowtail on the way home and spent an extra three hours fishing. Many more Yellowtail were hooked and lost.
Angler Mike with his Yellowtail:

The offshore scene produced some decent Yellowtail counts off the Kelp Paddies, with only a handful of Bluefin Tuna mixed in. Most fish are being caught from 100 to 120 miles south of the border, way out west. Winds from 20 to 30 knots early in the week did not help the counts. Unfortunately the winds are not expected to subside through the weekend.
Angler Jake fished the Grande on a 1.5 day trip returning Sunday, 06-17-12. They caught a bunch of Yellowtail off the Kelp Paddies and slid in on several Bluefin Tuna schools for a handful of Tuna. Some pictures:

Jake's cooler is full!

Angler Ron fished the Condor on a 1.5 day trip returning Sunday, 06-17-12. They caught limits of Yellowtail and 3 Bluefin Tuna. Some pictures:

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The Barracuda was very steady throughout the week in Long Beach, moving from the Huntington Flats on Friday to the Horseshoe Kelp on Sunday. Santa Monica Bay boats have had to come down to Long Beach for their shot at the Barracuda. The White Seabass Island bite remains slow, a few fish here and there. Also the Coastal Tankers attracted so much attention; this bite has also dwindled down to only a few fish being caught. Some rather large Halibut have been caught recently at the Domes and south of Dana Point.

The Coronado Islands and Rockpile down south have remained steady, with Yellowtail counts in the high teens most days. Still a few fish being caught at Catalina, with a few schools spotted at San Clemente Island as well as Santa Barbara Island.

The Bluefin Tuna zone has widened, and the Shogun got into a nice school of biting Bluefin Tuna to 65 pounds at noon on Saturday, 06-02-12 on their 2nd day of their 8 day trip: Some pictures:

On day 3 the Shogun remained in the same area and got into a ripper bite on Bluefin to 85 pounds:

A few Albacore are showing up in the counts offshore, as boats search for the Bluefin Tuna. The last few days offshore have been real nasty and conditions are expected to improve shortly and into the weekend. A number of 1.5 and multi day trips have been scheduled to target the Bluefin Tuna and Albacore offshore this weekend. Cross your fingers that this bite starts to heat up.

The Mardiosa managed to catch 3 White Seabass and 20 Calico Bass on Saturday, 06-02-12, and then on Sunday, 06-03-12, caught 8 Yellowtail, 30 Calico Bass, 3 Sheephead and 1 Sargo.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The White Seabass Island bite slows down, although plenty of Coastal Tankers are still being caught, provided you're willing to put in the time for them. A few huge Yellowtail are mixed in with the Tanker Seabass too, that is not a common occurrence locally? The Coronado Islands and Rockpile down south have heated back up, with Yellowtail counts in the high 30's and fish to 44 pounds. Still a few fish being caught at Catalina, with a few schools spotted at San Clemente Island as well as Santa Barbara Island. Recently the Barracuda show up one day and are gone the next, both in Santa Monica Bay and Long Beach, and now they are back again, with many boats catching limits on Wednesday out of Long Beach.

The excitement level increased when word spread that the First Bluefin Tuna of the year was caught by Danny Lynch on the multi day trip over the Holiday weekend on the Sea Adventure 80, some 95 miles south of Point Loma on a cedar plug trolling:

They also caught a few Yellowtail on the three day trip:

Speaking of Bluefin Tuna, the Royal Star on the way back from Alijos Rocks found some schools of biting Bluefin Tuna to 106 pounds, average size was 75 pounds:

All of the multi-day trips that ran over the Holiday weekend found Mother Wind a big annoyance, preventing any further offshore exploring. My trip on the Aztec out of Seaforth Landing, a 2.5 day trip, spent the morning of the first day searching for Yellowtail in Ensenada Bay. We saw some, but they didn't want to play. Of course on Sunday they bit, while we ventured south to San Martin Island, waking up to 30 knot winds and 53 degree dirty water. Saturday afternoon was spent hammering the Lingcod to 14 pounds, along with some Reds and other Rockfish. Sunday was spent attempting to salvage the day with Whitefish and Sheephead; however, they didn't want to play either. We did spend several hours fishing deep water Rockfish for about 50 Reds and a few more Lingcod. Saturday's Jackpot Lingcod caught by me:

Sunday's Jackpot Lingcod, twins?

The Charter Boat Dreamer caught limits of White Seabass on Monday, 05-28-12. The Mardiosa managed 2 White Seabass, 1 Halibut, 18 Calico Bass, 7 Sheephead and 6 Sargo on Monday, 05-28-12, and then on Thursday, 05-31-12, caught 5 White Seabass, 1 Halibut, and 25 Calico Bass.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Returning from a fantastic 10 day Vacation in Punta Cana, in The Dominican Republic, with my lovely wife, Sheryl of 42 years, I see I returned just in time for some great fishing action.

It's an exciting time of the year, with high expectations for a hot summer. This week produced a number of opportunities to catch an exotic and start the season off right. The White Seabass go off both at the Islands and with huge fish being caught locally. Yellowtail go on the chew at the Coronado Islands, with a few fish caught at Catalina. Barracuda arrive in Santa Monica Bay and rapidly disappear? An exploratory trip offshore on the Top Gun 80 results in catching large Bonito to 15 pounds, although no sightings of Tuna or Tails. Local Bass fishing continues to improve as the waters warm up, despite setbacks from windy conditions off and on.

There will be lots of multi-day trips being run this Holiday weekend and I will be fishing on the Aztec out of Seaforth on a 2.5 day trip to celebrate my 65th birthday, targeting Yellowtail down south of the border. Crossing my fingers on the ugly wind that is forecasted for at least Saturday?

Now for some of the spectacular results this week:

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

The weekend weather was very nice, with the water temps gradually increasing daily to reach the mid 60's, and consequently the fishing continued to improve. More White Seabass were caught at Catalina and a few along the coast to a whopping sixty pounds. Yellowtail remain scarce at Catalina, however, the Calico Bass fishing is much better. More Squid were located at both Catalina and San Clemente Island. Barracuda are moving up the coast and the question is: have they finally arrived in Long Beach? There were sightings on Thursday, yet none were hooked and landed.

Private boater Ron with friend James caught their limit of White Seabass on Saturday, 05-05-12, catching huge 50 and 60 pound fish:

The Charter Boat Options caught limits of White Seabass on their last two trips to Catalina over the weekend.

A number of Private boaters also got into the Catalina White Seabass action this week.

The Yellowtail in La Jolla returned in small quantities, along with a few White Seabass!

There were more good evenings of Bass fishing on the Twilight runs.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Ok the storm on Saturday kept almost everyone off the water, with only a few anglers fishing on Sunday. Good weather all week provided great opportunities for better fishing, although few private boaters have taken advantage of it. Most of those who did were rewarded.

The Yellowtail began biting in La Jolla last week, and on Monday the fleet caught ten Yellowtail, with the ¾ day boat San Diego catching six. They caught another seven on Tuesday, 04-17-12 and 15 more on Wednesday to 34 pounds.

Angler Odium fished on the San Diego on Thursday, 04-19-12 with friend Brian and both caught Yellowtail. Brian with his:

Private boater Brando got in on the La Jolla Yellowtail action Wednesday, 04-18-12 with a friend:

Private boater Jeff on his boat "Ready to Assemble" returned to Catalina Island on Saturday evening, in rough seas, where I, crew Jonathan and George joined Jeff. We stopped at the Isthmus to look for Squid with only 50 pieces to show for our 6 hour effort in a continuous rock and roll environment. The seas finally settled down Sunday morning after sunrise. According to Jeff the water temps were unaffected by the Storm, and water clarity remained similar to his last trip. However, the Yellowtail had lockjaw. We did see boiling fish, and several seals were happy campers throwing a fresh caught Yellowtail up in the air and slapping them down, while the Birds when nuts eating the scraps.

Due to the storm all 1.5-day or longer trips over the weekend were cancelled. However, the Aztec ran a charter trip on Monday, 04-16-12 and returned with limits of Reds and Rockfish, including 11 fat Lingcod.

The Pacific Star ran a 2-day trip to the Islands returning Tuesday, 04-17-12 with limits of Rockfish, 3 Halibut and 40 Lingcod. Some pictures:

Local fishing remains excellent on Rockfishing, with more nice Lingcod being caught. The warmer days this week should help in reducing the cold dirty water along the coast. There were some decent evenings of Bass fishing on the Twilight runs.

A Summary of local fishing from Santa Monica to Oceanside, including Catalina and San Clemente Islands, with fishing trips out of San Diego down to Baja, Mexico.

Wow, with excellent weather on Saturday and Sunday, it was game on. Yep, it was breezy in the afternoon, so you had to get the job done in the morning, many did.

Private boater Jeff set the early standard for great fishing at Catalina Island last weekend. He found the home guard Yellowtail on the chew Saturday, 04-07-12. Fishing solo, as he had a last minute cancellation from his crew. Jeff caught two Yellowtail weighing 20 pounds, and a 15 pound Tail to wrap up the day's catch early morning:

Not wanting to let an opportunity go to waste, Captain Jeff headed back to the Island on Sunday, and slammed the Yellowtail, again fishing solo, landing six Yellowtail to 30 pounds, out of nine hook ups. Wow Jeff, that's outstanding!

The Pacific Voyager ran a 1.5-day trip over the weekend and slammed the Reds, Lingcod, and Rockfish.

The Freedom out of 22nd St. Landing ran a trip Sunday, 04-08-12 to San Nicolas Island. According to angler Odium the fishing was excellent. Some pictures:

The reports from the ¾ and ½ day Sport Boats locally remain excellent on Rockfishing, with some nice Lingcod included in this weeks count. The cold dirty water along the coast continued, so the Bass fishing remains slow.

The Native Sun fished twilight trips both Saturday, April 07, 2012 and Sunday, April 08, 2012, as angler Loker and friends found the Sand Bass on the chew. Some pictures courtesy of the Loker:

Hot news! Local White Seabass on the prowl. Private boater Dan shows off his personal best and BAC Club record 68 pound White Seabass caught Sunday, 02-05-12 out of Newport Beach:

The rumors have been silently passed around that the Sea Biscuits have shown up chasing the local live squid schools, and it appears the rumors are now confirmed!

So they targeted assorted Rockfish and did well, yet the bigger Reds and Lingcod were not on the chew.

Jose with his 26 pound Yellowtail:

The local boats are doing well on catching Sculpin in the morning, with afternoon fishing concentrated on finding Bass on the structure. The Bass fishing has picked up lately, with some excellent catches being made during ideal conditions.

Thursday Recap Report-Weekend Possibilities:
For local fishing in the Santa Monica, Long Beach, Catalina and San Clemente Islands. Through:
01-05-12

Last Chance trips for Rockfish and Sheephead in great weather conditions proved very fruitful for a number of anglers Friday and Saturday. See below by area for selected reports: Meanwhile local fishing is now consisting primarily of Sculpin and mixed Bass fishing, with Santa Monica Bay showing the best results for mixed Bass.

My 2012 fishing wish list!
I'm not sure how everyone else feels about 2011 fishing (catching) results; however my opinion as primarily a private boater is that the year was an extreme disappointment on many fronts, although in a select few species fishing was quite good. So I have put together a wish list for 2012, which I hope we can all look forward to in following our mutual passion for fishing this year. Your thoughts are welcomed.

1. Another year of good coastal and island White Seabass fishing, one of the few bright spots in 2011.
2. The return of Yellowtail to the islands of Catalina and San Clemente, which were almost non-existent in 2011.
3. The return of Yellowtail to offshore kelp paddies, mostly MIA for several years now.
4. The return of Yellowtail to the Coronado Islands and Rock Pile south of the border.
5. Some common sense on the part of the Mexican Government for fishing visas, a serious reduction in drug cartel crimes, and elimination of dishonest Mexican policemen. I know I'm dreaming?
6. Another great Bluefin Tuna run with fewer Bluefin Tuna seiners targeting under 30 pound fish.
7. A normal run of Albacore to popular offshore high spots (390, 302, 371, 425, 1010, etc.) within a distance of under sixty miles, where most private boaters and one day Sport Boats can target them.
8. After a good run of Bluefin Tuna and Albacore from late June to mid August, the arrival of Dorado and Yellowfin Tuna in big numbers such as they did in 2009, as far north as Catalina.
9. A reduction in Calico and Sand Bass limits to five, raising the size limit to 13 inches with all fish 17 inches or larger released. More catch and release emphasis on Sport and private boats.
10. The return of Halibut to the Santa Monica Bay.
11. Another great Barracuda run during the summer months.
12. The return of Bonito everywhere during the summer months!
13. More calm days out at sea, with Mother Wind taking longer vacations! Last year's winds were relentless and constantly created changing conditions with declines in water temps, disrupting what little offshore fishing there was.
14. An MLPA program that makes sense, includes a rotation system when proven fisheries are again healthy in a closed area and can re-opened to the public, which also includes catch and release only areas.
15. The financial stability and health that allows me one more Long Range fishing trip!
16. Wishing every angler a safe and healthy 2012 fishing season, while reaching a new personal best in at least one of your targeted species of fish!

No more news on the winter runs of Yellowtail south of the border.

Twilight fishing: The Slammer out of Redondo Sportfishing ran a trip on Thursday, 1-05-12, with 4 anglers catching 1 Sculpin, 59 Sand Dab, 8 Lobster, 30 Rock Crab and 2 Spider Crab.

In Santa Monica Bay
Private boater Jason fished Friday, 12-30-11 with Vince out of Santa Monica Bay targeting local Reds, they limited out in short order on the Reds, then dropped the Hoops and limited out on Lobster, a stellar trip for sure! Some pictures:

Jason with a big Red:

The New Del Mar and Spitfire are now concentrating on Bass and Sculpin fishing. The New Del Mar on their Tuesday, 1-05-12 trip, caught over 100 Sand Bass and 18 Calico Bass with a decent count of 45 on the Sculpin.

Newport Beach and Dana Point.
Some mixed Bass being caught with limit style Sculpin fishing, plus a couple of Halibut has been the theme this week

Long Beach and San Pedro
Private boater Grant fished with friends over the weekend and caught some nice local Sheephead:

Private boater Gary and friends fished the Long Beach area for some outstanding Halibut, 28 pounds, 14 pounds and 24" on New Years Day:

Private boater Erik fished with friends out of the Long Beach area for some outstanding end of the year Rockfishing: Some pictures:

Private boater Dean fished with friend Martin and their sons, out of the Long Beach area for some last chance Rock fishing, and they slammed them: Some pictures:

Japan Ron sent me some photos from his 3/4 day trip on the Victory, Wednesday, 1-04-12:

The Islands

Catalina/Santa Barbara Island!

Private boater Jonathan with wife Jenn slams the big Sheephead at Catalina. They spent a mini 4-day vacation at the Island before New Years, both fishing and touring. The targeted species was White Seabass; with a backup plan for Sheephead and end of the season Reds. The backup plan worked great, as the targeted species remained the Ghosts they are generally known as. Some pictures of huge Sheephead, with enormous Females to go with the big Males, as well as catching a limit of Reds.

Jonathan with the Biggest Female Sheephead I have ever seen:

Jenn with a big Red:

Nice Johnny Bass:

San Clemente Island!

No reports this week.

Down South-San Diego and good ole Mexico!Captain Louie ran an Ensenada charter on his private boat on Friday, finding the winter Yellowtail on the chew out from 20 to 27 pounds. Some pictures:

The Indian is running full day Rockcod trips to the Finger Bank and Points south of the border. They had near limits around on Wednesday, 01-04-12, for 22 anglers, with a lot of quality Reds and some Lingcod. It was their first trip requiring the new Mexican Visas, which went off with out a hitch, albeit the pocket book was stung by all for an extra $28. Some pictures:

Weather
The weather forecast for the weekend is decent for Saturday and Sunday, with some wind in afternoon, and offshore. Always check the latest forecast before leaving the dock.
