Spectra to Mono 20#-40#
Hey guys
I have been using Uni to uni as a connection for mono to spectra on my 20 and 30# rods, and while it works (i know if it aint broke dont fix it) I am wondering if there is a better option.
What do you prefer?
thanks!
BTW i'm using 50# spectra

re: Spectra to Mono 20#-40#
I've been using a Bob Sands/Tony Pena knot to join my spectra to a mono leader. Easy to tie, strong, and it's lower profile than a uni/uni for going through the guides.
I tie an overhand knot with the mono onto the spectra then wrap the spectra down and back about a dozen times.

I use about the same knot as Mark, but instead of an overhand I tie a uni knot in the mono. Both accomplish the same results.

Another vote for the Bob Sands knot. Low profile and easy to tie and in my tests, I can get in excess of 80% in my own simpleton tests.

The Bob Sands knot uses the Uni instead of an overhand knot for the mono. Fantastic connection but takes practice to tie it when the reel is on the rod and you are changing out the top shots. Once you have it down you will love it.

i use the bob sands knot also how about using the heavy spectra 100 to 130lb and topshot of the same you would use the hollow braid and crimps but how about solid spectra and bob sands knot with a very short topshot what is preffered fishing for big cows

re: Spectra to Mono 20#-40#
I have had excellent luck with this knot, after much practice I can now tie it even when the boat is rolling around. I use a 3 turn uni to start and 10 to 12 up and down. I spit on the knot and chinch it up very carefully. After you tie a few you can tell by looking if you have a good one. If you use a bit longer top it will still cast out of the guides with a lure. This knot has changed how I fish more that anything else I've done, going to short tops of fluro over spectra. I can now use very small reels for very large fish. I think it makes fishing even more fun.

re: Spectra to Mono 20#-40#
The version I use is more like a Pena than a Bob Sands, but really only because the knot I tie in the mono is a double overhand rather than a uni. The way I thread it, though, it works pretty much like the uni in a Bob Sands. No matter what you call it, though, I think this is the best overall choice for connecting spectra to mono (or directly to fluoro!) at any weight less than 100#.
As others have said, once you get the hang of tying this knot, it's very easy, and you'll be able to make the connection on a rocking boat in the middle of a hot bite.
