Garmin Chart Plotter Hunting......

I am looking at two models: Garmin Chart Plotter 182 (5.5 inch) and 232 (7.1 inch). So far the best prices I have seen are from Consumer Marine Electronics.

Garmin 182 (internal) $449
Garmin 232 (external) $869

What offers have the rest of you seen out there lately?

How important is the external antenna vs internal?

I prefer to pay for a bigger screen than to pay for color....am I wrong?

Thanks guys!

Hey Louis the West Marine in LB had 2 (Open boxes) Garmin 2010C for sale for $999. Not sure if they are still availbale. In addition not sure if the screen is to large for your needs. I run one in my Davis and love the heck out of it. Hell of a deal. They are coming out with a 3010C. Same size screen but you are able to hook up all sorts of stuff the new model.

RE: Garmin Chart Plotter Hunting......

Louis,
How have you been? Have you looked at the 2006C? You can find them on ebay lately for about $950. I purchased mine from Westmarine for $2,000 at the end of last year. BoatUS was also closing them out at $999 a couple of weeks ago.

As far as the 182C vs. the 232 I would pick the 182C for two reasons. The 232 has a slower processor in it. The screen is also pretty hard to see during the day. Good luck.

Thanks Louis. Having them all linked toether is bitchen also. On my radar I have it set up so when I see a target I put my cursor on that target and it tells me lat/long, nm, and bearing of where that target is. My favorite piece is the autopilot.

Louis, there is another reason to go Garmin that I forgot to mention to you last night - Service. If you ever have to send it in for repair, Garmin downloads and saves all your WPs, and reloads them back after repair. They have WPs permanently saved in case you buy another unit down the road -just send it to them and they reload all your favorite saved spots.

RE: Garmin Chart Plotter Hunting......

Look at garmins 172c. I think it has all of the same stuff as the 182. Less than $600 on the net. About $80 for bluechart and $40 for a 16 mb chip.
I just bought a 276c and bluechart but wish now I had a little bigger screen. 276c- 3.8 diagonal screen, 172c- 4.5 diagonal screen.

Garmin Way to go!

Yes I will be looking at the 2006 also. I will trade large screen for color any day, looks like the 2006 and the 232 have the same screen (7.1), but the 2006 in newer (?) I am on a budget, so its quite possible I will just go with the 182 with the 5.5 screen.....but we will see.

So where are all the latest on-line dealers? Give me leads....

And thanks for all the info Freddie!

The prices you have on the 182 and the 232 are the lowest youll find IMO,really good prices.

RE: Garmin Chart Plotter Hunting......

I had the 232 on the old boat & loved it. Didn't think I needed the color until I used a buddy's unit. Color really makes the different types of information stand out. If I had the space, I would have the 2006 or 2010 color unit. All I have room for is the 182 and even though it's a little smaller, I'm happy with the compromise.
Good Luck.
