Zodiac Style Diggy Advice/info

Well I've bee looking for a good deal on yak but zodiac/inflatable boat seems to be cheaper.

I've found a few that can hold 880lbs and under $400-600 new.

So my questions are:

Would it be safe to take one of these out side the break waters? To fish around the Jettys.

Running light/Nav lights?

Would there be anykind of boat registration?

What important things would be kept on board?

Might get one after dec. If I dont need to get anything major to get out on the water with just paddles maybe I'll toss it on a dolly and take it the cat with me or cabrillo to test it out.

I think I got the most important stuff already

vhf and pfd...

re: Zodiac Style Diggy Advice/info

There are 2 types of inflatable materials...pvc and hypalon...the cheapies are pvc and will last a few years...but, they get sticky from sunlight and turn yellow over time..hypalon is better and will last years longer...I would buy a used hypalon inflatable, like Achilles, over a new pvc...just my take on the difference in quality...take a compass for fog and a shiny mirror to signal for help if the handheld stuff quits working..all rigs with a motor must be registered as vessels..lights are a must if you nite dive and the red/green colors help boaters to tell your direction so they don't run over you..rowing is ok but, a strong current and building waves can cancel your efforts and maybe carry you out to sea if santa ana offshore winds are strong...outside the breakwater can get dangerous for small boats in the afternoon..suggest getting a motor with oars as your backup..
