Nowhere in any of that is there an explanation of why the DFG wants to kill off the Lake Trout.
What is the reason given ? How long have the Lake Trout been in there ? The possibility of catching a truly large fish is always a big draw for me.

You have to read between the lines.

The contention by Idaho Fish and Game is that the lake trout are threatening other species populations and according to those who have been fishing there for three decades that does not seem to be the case.
