Do you split fishing expenses?
I am very interested in hearing other opinions on splitting fuel costs and cleaning the boat after a trip.
FYI: When I invite someone to go fishing with me, I tell them that everyone who goes will share in the fuel costs and that we all wash the salt & grit off my boat on our return.
FYI: When I am invited to go out with someone else on their boat I always ask how much is my share of expenses and always stay to wash the boat.
Thanks for any insight to what is customary.

RE: Do you split fishing expenses?
That's the bare minimum IMHO. I add groveling, driving all night (for those offshore runs), bait, ice, munchies...whatever is needed. Usually the PBer will tell me what to bring and that's that. I also ask what tackle to pack. Some guys don't want me to bring anything...others want minimal gear brought along. If the boat's dry (no alcohol...not even beer) I am too. If the guys want beer, I bring it. Scrubbing's a given.

I always try and share not only expenses but workload during the trip. I always expect the same back. One thing though, if you want to "split" expenses estimate them and or collect them upfront or at least let everyone know. You wouldn't pay for a charter at the end based on running farther than you thought or using more bait and chum than anticiapted.

RE: Do you split fishing expenses?
We always divide all costs by the amount of anglers. By saying ALL costs, I mean gas for the boat & truck, ice, bait, food, drinks. And yes at the end of a trip everyone participates on the clean up. Most who fish with us are willing to pay for more than requested or bring extra's such as additiona drinks, munchies or tackle to be left on the boat. If you have an issue on any of this.... you will not be asked out again, period.

The 'running farther than anticipated' part is covered in your charter fee. They generally won't run farther if it means eating into their profit unless they need to get their counts up.
On a private boat, the key isn't to make money, it's to split the actual costs. If you were thinking about running 75 miles but ended up going 100 then everybodys share is more. However, it's pretty hard to get more bait when you are 100 miles offshore so the bait cost is pretty well known before leaving the harbor...
We figure out the costs of fuel, ice and bait and split the costs at the end of the trip. Going in, everyone knows 'ballpark' what the trip is going to cost.

RE: Do you split fishing expenses?
When I invite someone on my boat I never ask them to pitch in for anything. I dont ask them to bring gear along either, since I alreay have enoughf for everyone, But if they want to I dont say no. I have never asked anyone to give me money for fuel or to scrub my boat for me. I do this because I am going out anyways with or without them. If they do not come I will still go out and pay my own fuel so WTF? I am the one calling them to come with me, so why should I charge a guest money when I want them to go. Their payment is helping me out with things I cannot do at the same time like drive and fish. It dosent make sense to me to invite someone on your boat and then charge them for a bunch of stuff. Its a matter of generosity and respect.

RE: Do you split fishing expenses?
I don't own a boat so if I want to go out on the water I either need a ride on someone's personal boat or on a charter. If I'm going on someone's personal boat I expect to split all expenses. I make sure to give the person their money up front. I always ask the person if they need me to bring anything (bait, tackle, ice, etc.). Once the trip is done I assist in the clean up. If it's a good trip I usually give the person more money on top of expenses. There have been times when I offered the person money and they wouldn't accept it. When this was the case I usually offered the person some of my catch. Whatever the situation is I think the boat owner should make it perfectly clear before the trip what he or she expects. I think a lot of boat owners get turned off on inviting people because their passengers don't pay them what they expect when they didn't make it clear to begin with.

RE: Do you split fishing expenses?
Lately, I've been fishing by myself. When I do take friends, we split the boat gas, truck diesel, bait & parking fees equally. Even though I own the boat, I pay my equal share of the split. If you bring a bag of Doritos, I want some. I don't accept help launching/recovering to the trailer & I don't need help with the cleanup. I find it goes faster if I just do it myself. As for rules on my boat: 1) DFG rules followed, 2) No pot or other drugs, 3) Don't cut bait on the gunwales, 4) Crybabies will never fish with me again, 5) You can listen to any heavy metal station you like.

RE: Do you split fishing expenses?
Hi there nosek,
This thread topic has come up a number of times and usually gets a good number of replies. See archives .... that is .... if you're lucky enough to actually get refined results!
10 step program:
In the past, I've 1) paid for half or my share of the boat gas, 2) half or my share of the launch fee, 3) half or my share of the bait fee, 4) brought my own food and drink (mutually agreed), 5) used a 'soft' tackle bag for my stuff (no banging up the boat), 6) taken a minimum of two setups (agreed upon), 7) respected the dry boat and no smoking rule (don't smoke anyways) and always helped out in getting the boat ready for the next trip (ramp wash-down, unloading, boat washing, etc.) 9) go to the host's house in the morning (i.e. not being picked up) and helping to get the boat parked back in it's place). 10) Thanking the host, family and fellow anglers.
Added later: I don't keep fish so 1) I always gave my fish to my host, 2) I also pulled the hook (no matter how many on board) unless they had an automatic system, 3) I deffered to the host on the primo or scarce baits, I bailed when it was needed, etc, etc. Just seemed natural.
I don't seek or accept offers (nothing against anybody) anymore because I have always done the above and it's just too much dang work. Yes .... I understand the host still has to spend for tags, tow vehicle gas, pay more for a vehicle that will pull the boat, insurance, cleaning supplies, on the water tow insurance, inspections and maintainence, wear and tear .... time away from family ... you name it!
I consider boat owners who invite us anglers on there boat are generous from the get-go because it's still more work on the owner.
I've noticed a sudden rise in the number of PBer's offering to share their boat with those of us that don't have a boat ... than ever before. Couldn't be that costs to 'take 'er out' have made going out solo on a consistant basis hazardous to the wallet!
In answer to your question, yes I DID.

RE: Do you split fishing expenses?
When I invite someone on my boat, I don't ask for anything, but I do expect help on the clean up. Almost everyone I've taken has offered to chip in and it's gladly accepted. Whatever they are comfortable with. One of my good friends is usually short on cash, but he always makes lunch for us and pays for bait when he has it. Maybe if I had the time to fish as much as I'd like to I would ask everyone to chip in just so I don't go broke.

RE: Do you split fishing expenses?
I try to have my guest split the cost with me but it never works out. I always spend more than my guests combined. As for cleaning the boat good luck. But what do expect from a non boat owner.

RE: Do you split fishing expenses?
I find that everyone offered a trip is willing to share expensess, fuel and bait(including me). I let them know approx how much so there are no surprises, especially with current fuel prices. i also tell them that we share what we catch. If you catch 6 Alberts and someone else gets skunked, you are going to give up a fish to that person. Bring your own lunch and drinks, be preparred to share drinks and snacks. I don't want 5 coolers, so food goes in the fridge, drinks in the boat cooler. I usually have a 4 rod limit. When we return, everone helps with claen up, unless permission was given ahead of time to leave due to an engagement. Departure time is --, return about --. All spelled out ahead when the invite is given.
