$500 Crap Shoot
I the counts are tough a few good and many
Nothings in the counts Yesterday an overnight
Had a tremendous day 130 fish while some 2 1/2
Days with less than 20 fish. It seems like a
$500 crap shoot. It costs me $100 to get to San Diego
So the ticket, fish cleaning some line and
It costs $500. In this economy doesn't seem
Like a good bet.

re: $500 Crap Shoot
Yeah, this isn't a lot of fun. I realized that I have been working far too many hours and haven't been fishing at all (last trip July 4, 2010) so I asked the boss for a couple of mid-week days of next week. I was all set to hop on a 2-day and catch some fish and then the counts dropped, but it looks like the weather is up and still expected to come up some more. Since I haven't been out I don't know for sure, and I know a lot of guys werre talking about grease-calm trips. But it would seem that the weather off shore has a lot to do with it. Late August/September often has bad off shore weather anyway, so maybe it's just that time of the year.
All those big counts said there were fish around, and hopefully there still will be when the water lays back down. I can justify spending that kind of money once this year, but I need to make sure the trip has a good shot at being fruitful before I go. Love being on the water and sleeping on a boat (arguable the best part), but right now I need something on the table to show for it.
 I just like to fish

Not certain how far south they were, but the Intrepid limited out on Bluefin today, on one stop, while heading north on their final leg of a 7 day.

re: $500 Crap Shoot
Yes, its a Crap Shoot, but lets face it, it often is.
But...if you were going to go on a 2 day vacation of another sort, how much money would you spend? And how much fun would you have, and what souvenirs might you bring back? Heck, if we're thinking of Crap Shoots, going Vegas would let you shoot craps, but probably cost more and instead of bringing back fish you might bring back crabs.
Ok, some joking there, but you get the idea--looking at it a different way, while it is indeed a crapshoot, it could still be a fine choice for a short vacation.

re: $500 Crap Shoot
Economy has to do with it for sure. Two things
In a better economy if I hit a trip with poor
Counts no big I can go in a week or two. The other point
With that $500 I can take my wife and daughters
To San Diego for 3 fun days for the whole family.
I think Marley has it right go on a 2 day so you
Have the best chance. I haven't fished an
Overnight in 9 years because the extra time
On the 1.5 makes is a safer bet.
Like most on this board here I can bring home
Plenty of fish even on a low count trip, but
The days of 100+ tuna on one day boats haven't
Been here for about 4 years I think.
There is more tension on low count trips. You
Can feel it. Guys don't want to Blank so they
Are working hard to get bit and that can lead
To a more competitive less loose and friendly
Trip especially on the short trips. A typical
One day is only about 6 to 7 hours of fishing
at 80 south.

For me, it's simple. If I want fish, I'll go to the fish market.
Some men fish their entire lives without realizing it's not fish they're after.
Clay I got my fill of cows in the fall of 2005 dyholi!

Not being a smartass, but is there a market (besides Mario's & Pt. Loma seafood) where an individual may purchase wild, FRESH, line caught bluefin?
Not anywhere near where I live.
That's part of the attraction, isn't it? How many opportunities to catch bluefin will you have in your career?
The stakes are high, the price is high, the investment is rich.
I signed up last week for a limited load 28 passenger trip when there were still 16 spots left.
Now, it's sold out and we are taking 33 anglers???
"Budget @20 day fuel surcharge, Cash only, collected on the boat."
Fish filleting (in US waters of course) is $5-$10 per fish depending on size...
you better ask yourself how good do you want to do??
It's game on, bring your wallet and a strong heart.

this is a expensive hobby fellas......not for the weak of wallet ......
This economy dictates that I wait for and check out the "Last Chance Charters". Allcoast used to have a board for that purpose. It was quite popular during Tuna Season.
The only crapshoot for my trip this week is the wind.

re: $500 Crap Shoot
You don't like it, go play golf! Or like my dear friend, HD, go shoot wild boar with blackpower gun or bow hunt! All Big outlay, you hit or you miss, the ball, the fish or the pig! Its the hunt, the comraderie, its getting out of the house away from the mundane and the montonous!
I always consider the cost of fishing the cost of my fun, if I catch fish, swell, if I don't oh well, at least I went.

re: $500 Crap Shoot - retail option
If you want reasonably priced seafood and are in San Diego, take a look at Catalina Seafood...they are somewhat off the beaten path and are reasonable in priced.
