re: Jig 'n' Pop....
Wow, lots of discussion was going on while I was fluking off Nantucket Island,Ma.
I don't have to travel to Nantucket Island to catch a few fluke by driving 5 hours and running 40 plus miles on a boat.
But I am in pursuit of doormat and want to explore areas where very few fishermen fished before.
We found a fluke virgin territory where nobody ever fished. There were mother lode of fluke and some of them are big
Tuna hunting is the same for me.
Who would have believed 600 - 800 lb giant can be landed on a standup within 30 minutes until Dennis Braid tried and proved it.
Ask guys who caught big bluefin on jigs and popers in Cape Cod and NC ? They wouldn't doubt they can land a cow on a spinning reels. Only those who haven't caught big tuna on a spinning reels doubt it.
Cow off Mexico fight harder than any other tuna for its size from my experience, but nothing is special. It takes a little more fighting time. That is it. Al long as the line capacity is not a problem, any tuna can be landed on spinning reel in reasonable time as fishermen can use heavy drag (max drag of Stella or Saltiga is over 50 lb).
If you use light drag for big tuna, it takes forever and you can land quickly if you use heavy drag whether you use conventional or spinners. John of Sportfishing Lodge landed a 180 lb yellowfin with 450g Black Hole Cape Cod Special and Stella 20000SW within 15 minutes recently. He used close to 40 lb drag. He just wanted to test the strength of the rod.
I think to land a 180 lb yft with a heavy conventional reel is not an easy task.
The fighting technique is different. When You see how a fishermen fight a big tuna with a spinning reel, you realize gear ratio doesn't matter.
All I suggest is to try it.
I was skeptical when I started to use spinning reels for big tuna years ago, but I don't doubt anymore after I landed big tuna over 200 lb even with long 8' popping rod.
The use of full harness is a must.
This trip is not to prove anything, but to enjoy and have fun.
If there is no challenge, it is boring.
There will be tackle failure, knot failure, line failure, ect.
But that is fun part too.
I am going up to P.E.I. for giant in 5 days. I don't doubt I can land them on spinning reels, but no spinning reel have enough line capacity for them.
Line Capacity is the only issue.

Jim,
You are on the list.
I like to have a balance between fishermen from the US and from overseas, but if there are more interest from the US, I'll assign more spots for US fishermen, but upto 16.
There are 14 fishermen shown interest in the US, but there is no order and whoever make deposit first have a priority.
1. kilsong from NJ
2. Jamie (fishordie)from West Coast
3. David (fishybuzz)from West Coast
4. Scott (bowguide) from NJ
5. Tuna Laco (Harold)from West Coast
6. Racko from Cananda
7. David (masonboro)from NC
8. David (fishNH) from NH
9. Ryan ( ExtremeFisherman)from NY
10.Mark from Texas
11.gp125-racer from West Coast
12.monocom from NJ
13.Brian Metz from NJ
14.Rodless_Jim from West Coast
from overseas
1-2.Jin and his friend from Korea
3. abousoulayman from France
4.mickyspect from Ireland
5-6. fisherman from Singapore

To those who are assuming that the spinfishermaen are going to get spooled....well they may, but here is a thought.
Twenty years ago LR fisherman had Penn 50wides filled with 400-500 yds of 80lb mono. With tricking by Cal, they could get drags up to maybe 35-40lbs with freespool. Todays Stellas can get the same amount 450+ yds of 80-100lb braid and over 50lbs of drag. If you fished for big fish 20 years ago, did you worry about getting spooled and having a fish dragging the heavy mono around? Just something to think about.
As far as many fisherman getting upset that "people from other countries are descending on their fishing spots", last time I checked these spots are in Mexican waters and we are also people from another country. Also, I am just a middle class stiff, but why would it "drive guys insane" that folks spend 50-100 grand a year on fishing? It seems to me that they are supporting the industry. I wish I was one of them!
Jealousy, resistance to change and personality flaws are the likely reasons some react negatively to this new trend. I can not control people, just writing about what I have heard in conversation by more then a few. . Once again, to each their own...best of luck. I have a daughter due next week....see you on a long range boat in 18 years...

Congrads on the girl.............I just put my girl thru college, which is eqivelant to about 10-15 ....15 day trips. A girl....get ready to be spooled......!
Does anyone know the MSRP on one of these "Stellas"?
Sounds like a rightous reel that I would not mind having.
But, to fight a 100 plus YFT with one, would I be wrong about using a
fast rod?.......or should one use a more medium type?

A Stella 20000 msrp is $1,200 but you can find them for $900-$950.
IMO the rod should be a medium action rod.

The Penn Torque spinning reels advertise more line capacity than the 20000, similar drag, at 2/3 the price. ANyone have any experience wit the Penn Torque spinner?

I can not give any opinion of Toque reel because I haven't tested the reel yet. Here is a review of the reel by Alan Hawk.

nice reel.....but the red flag is the issue with not being able to use more than 29# of drag.......if that Were corrected I would get one....
just sent in my deposit for the trip....I'm all in for this trip.

Not to hijack the thread but Alan just this month posted an update on a different forum about the Torque Spinner:
"The bailed and bailess reels are the same under the spool. Penn has recently changed the design of the spool hub from the cross pin to the washer stop and amended the bottom plate of the spool accordingly. This is why you can still see the recess of the -now gone- cross pin in that bottom plate as you pointed out. The pin's recess should disappear from reels made after the design change. Newer bailed reels have that updated washer stop as well so that you can shim the spools of both reels as you correctly noted.
Also Penn has taken care of the bail arm that bent too much, and made a new bail arm that I can confirm does not touch the spool under 21 kilos (46.3lb) of drag pressure which is the maximum I could handle without my arms getting ripped off my body. I can safely say that it won't touch the spool at the addition of the 3.7lb remaining for it to reach its maximum 50lb drag.
Still to test the new drag seal for water intrusion."

Set the drag to 35#, tie it off to your bumper...you'll find out pretty quick...

Fishy, maybe you could pm Tunanorth. I am sure he would either know or find out the answer for you.
