SBI, 7/24/04.

Well I headed off to MDR with my sights set on SBI again.
Called Freddie from my cell phone on the way down.
Basically, he told me SBI changed and the waves and weather too.
I arrived IN MDR, not before getting a jolt at Starbucks though.

Get to the launch ramp and the lady tells me it's now 7 dollars for only 24 hours.
Needless to say YOURS TRULY WAS NOT HAPPY!
Man have I been spoiled!

I got a phone number from her first for PCI (parking folks).
I wanted to let them know I was going overnight, and didn't want a ticket.
I told her "THIS SUCKS!", the fact of the 24 hour-only timeframe.
Then she started giving me a hard time.
Then she started cussing at me En Espanol.
Little did she know YO HABLA ESPANOL.
When I'm Latino I'm FloMartinez, and when I'm Italian I'm FloMario.

I did have this bucket of Barracuda heads, tails, and guts that I was
going to dump on a kelp paddy when I found one, but I was very very
temped to crawl in the back of the boat, ask her to come here, and
then dump that crap on her . . . of course . . . I behaved.

Managed to get over to In-Seine Bait and grabbed a scoop of medium cured sardines.
Chatted for a few and headed out.
Kind of choppy the first 8 miles.
Then it laid down.
At 9 miles more slop.

At the 20 mile mark I spot the only kelp all the way to SBI.
It was loaded with Mackerel!
I managed to snag 15.
I made it to SBI by 1 pm.

OMG the place had changed since last weekend!
The water was green, cold, and there were 10+ boats.
The place WAS still alive with bait and birds though.
I fished my @ss off until the sun went down.
What did I catch? Not a damn thing!

The Sea Lions were out of control!
On the dropper-loop I hooked 6 of them.
Sea Lions 6 FloMar 0.
I also lost 4 complete rigs including the four 12 ounce torpedo sinkers.
They also managed to ruin 2 spools of line. x(
I DID manage to hook a nice WSB about 5 PM, and it came unbuttoned.
I was a mess after this.
By now the wind is screaming and making life difficult.

I decided to anchor up, and by now there were 15+ boats here.
I sent a bait bown and I was eating dinner when my reel is screaming.
By the time I knocked all my food over in the cabin, and got out the door,
the fish was gone.
I took a couple hour nap and then got up to look for squid.
Turned on the generator and immediately little 1n1/2 to 2 inch squid are in the lights.

The wind was really blowing now.
At 11 pm I got fed-up!
Pulled in the anchor and drifted deeper looking for squid.
I kept drifting and drifting and drifting.
When I got to 140 feet deep I said "GOODBYE SBI!".

I figured this would be good for my seamanship skills to head back in the dark.
Turned on the Radar, and made it back in 2 hours.
Only one cargo ship in the channel. :7
IT WAS MR. TOADS WILD RIDE part of the way in.

3 miles from MDR my alarm goes off. UhhOhh!
Looked for a bag on the prop first . . . NOPE.
Checked the oil and it was low, so I added some.
Fired it up and at the 2 miles-out mark the alarm goes off again.
Couldn't find anything wrong.
I did notice the battery only pulling 12.2 amps.
I decide to switch over and, fired it up, and no more problems.

You want to check your seamanship skills, make the run back from SBI in the dark.

Got back to the In-Seine Bait dock at 2 am where Todd had the bait boat runnin' to go look for bait.
We chatted about SBI as I gave him the update.
I did see 2 WSB Caught while I was there, but the water was 61.8 at 6 pm.
This is when I knew I'd had enough.

SBI has always been ALL OR NOTHING, and it stayed true to form again.
65 gallons of gas and 100.5 miles.

Totally beat and tired!

John.

RE: SBI, 7/23/04.

John, you must be beat - you fished the 24th not the 23rd (LOL). I was a little worried about you making the run alone due the conditions, and last night the news had a headline "Fisherman rescued at sea", and I thought OH NO, but it was off Puerto Rico. And you beat my record - I only hooked two sea lions, but on consecutive baits:7

I knew it would be iffy and a scratch at best, but one always learns a lot with a run like that, about fishing, your craft, your poise, and your seamanship. Glad you're home safe, buddy. I think we are in for some good tail action close to home this coming week, at least according to my historical logs.

RE: SBI, 7/23/04.

I guess when I wrote the 23rd it was a combination of reliving
the great 1/2-day Barracuda fishing on the 23rd with my Nephew,
and just being plain tired. I fixed it, thank you.

The 2 things that made the most difference was the drop in the
water temperature and that stupid wind. Had I not left when I
did I believe sometime throughout the night I may have come off
the anchor anyway. When the wind is swirling in the anchorage
it can play with your mind. I couldn't have slept if I had tried.

There's always next time . . . . whenever that is.
4 am walking up the driveway after parking the boat and car . . .
Man I felt like I'd just come down a swell.

RE: Time to pay.......

I forgot to tell you on the telephone.
My boat goes in on the 31st for routine maintenance.
If all goes well I may fish Sunday, probably just rest?
9 weeks and counting, and we need to start planning!

RE: SBI, 7/24/04.

That sucks regarding the MDR fee change. The 48 hours for $5
was an incredible deal. I always wondered how long it would
last.

As always you amaze me with your determination and focus. A
solo SBI trip with an evening return. I guess it just does not
get more exciting than that, other than a few YT would have
been nice.

I just keep staring at the boat in the driveway and thinking,
here goes another summer. If it's not one thing it's another.
I am at least feeling a little better.

Thanks again for the detailed report. It does help to light the
fire under my a$$ to get me back on the water. If anything else
I need some bait for the fall.

RE: SBI, 7/24/04.

I need to take the boat in to MC this Saturday, routine checkup.
I might be home in time for a PM run Saturday?
Maybe Sunday, if you want to clean the dust off your boat?

I'll light a fire under your @ss if you're not careful!
I've done it before and I can certainly do it again. LOL!

Yeah the MDR parking deal sucks!

John I think it was just one of those time periods, SCI Sat. & Sun. was also off the bite, unless you count a zillion baby Calico's. Better luck next time, or as you say better planning to make the luck better next time. Thanks for the report. Hook Up! Cory

John,
I hate when days and nights turn out like that it usually happens with high expectations. But anyway I got to tell you I was LMFAO reading the parking story. I would love to sea you(j) in action one day.

RE: SBI, 7/24/04.

I was a split-second away from clobbering this chick! *figureatively (sp) speaking*
Man was it hard to bite my tongue.
She kept trying to put the ticket on my dashboard.
I kept telling her it would blow out when I drove away.
She kept telling me "leave it there!".
Man she had an attitude!
I seem to bring that out in people sometimes. :o LMAO!
Go figure that?

You want to see me in action doing what?

Dumping that bucket of Barracuda remains on her would have been worse than being sprayed by a Skunk.

I think spending a day on the water with you could be informative and entertaining at the same time. Hopefully one dayâ?¦Iâ??ll bring my GPS for those lobster spots thatâ??s the informative part and trying to run over the scuba divers would be the entraining piecE

RE: SBI, 7/24/04.

Oh could I tell you stories about hooping for Lobsters, annnnnd scuba divers. x( Frown x( Frown x(

Once myself and another person had our 10 hoopnets around a reef.
Little boat rolls up with 2 divers.
They anchor right in the middle of all 10 nets.
Kind of like becomming the bullseye on a target.
After I introduced myself to both divers, one diver goes over.
SPLASH!!, and I FLIPPED! Not flipped-out mind you . . .
I convinced the diver remaining in the boat it was in their best interest.
No threat mind you.
I made them an offer they couldn't refuse.
Unfortunately though, the damage had been done.
Once the lights went on the bugs scattered.
They ruined it for us this night.
They divers left as quickly as they came!

Often times these days divers swim in from the beach trying not to alert us PB'ers.
The lights go on and we are screwed!
That reminds me of another story. LMAO!
Better save it for another time.

I have all the electronics I need on the boat Ofer!

John. Smile
