Local Shark sightings

Local Shark sightings
Hey guys quick question,was fishing locally,San Pedro,Long Beach,Horseshoe Kelp ect..area.In the afternoon when the wind started to pick up,I noticed a pretty sizable dorsal fin but it was kinda far of for ID.
A hour or so later we see it again this time its alot closer crossing the bow of our skiff,from my view it seemed about 16-20"wide the dorsal that is,it was a darker shade of blue,and the shark seemed to be moving pretty slow,got a good enough look to rule out mola,or something else,was definitively a shark,any ideas? Thanks

It may have been a 'Basking Shark" they are about twenty five to thirty feet long and can be a dark marine blue to almost black color.

My friend was at Bolsa Chica beach on Sunday afternoon and saw a Dolphin washed up on the beach. The Tail was bitten off....????? It was a fresh kill . He sent me a picture from his cell phone. He also said, he saw a "large shark shaped shadow" a couple of hours earlier in the surf.

Probaly the work of an adult white shark, alltho large mako's are notorious for this technic when dealing with sordefish but they usally stay offshore, so maybe white is learning a few tricks from one of his cousins.

if you remember what the SST was we can narrow down the suspects in relation to comfort zones.

I'm sure I should know what SST,stands for and once you tell me I will feel like a dummy,but anyway here are a few particulars,as I recall we were in about 80ft of water,the W/T was about 63-65dgrs,early afternoon,and about 4-6miles offshore,outside of LA lighthouse.
Also heard there were some threshers in the harbor this friday but can't say we saw any.

sea surface temp. WHat Keith is saying, based on the temps, it will give you a better idea of what species it MAY have been.

Temps won't help much..great whites swim in a wide temp range and depth range...if it was a thresher, you would probably have seen two fins with the long tail cutting the surface..more likely a gw or mako...increased number of sighting of big ones lately...

depth is also an indicator and what life was in the area size species marine mammals etc along with SST and clarity of water.
