Best BRAID line for Bottom Fishing

My first post!

Question. What is the BEST BRAID line for bottom fishing...Power Pro is NOT and option. I have had nothing but bad experiences with Power Pro.

Let me explain. On two seperate trips and two different test lines (65lb. and 80lb.) while hooked up to nice fish, Power Pro simply frayed and broke. I tested the guides to see if any were cracked and none were. The line never rubbed against the boat. Additionally, the fish was off of the bottom so it wasn't caused by rubbing on structure. This also happened to a good friend of mine. SAME EXACT THING!

Power Pro never again.

What else is good?

Daiwa Saltiga Boat Braid. Super smooth and metered colors.

I never lost a little fish-yes, I am free to say
It always was the biggest fish I caught that got away.

re: Best BRAID line for Bottom Fishing

Although it may be hard to label one single type of braid as the best, I have had great success with Cortland Spectron (non hollow) for bottom fishing (deep dropping). It is very durable and economical. El Capitan in Miami has some great prices on this (Ask for Eddie). If you ask about other types of fishing, I would go with the JB hollow which allows for finger cuff splicing. Cortland also makes a hollow braid supposedly of very good quality but I haven't tried it and it costs more than the Jerry Brown. From what I understand most spectra lines are made in two or three mills here in the US and sold to various companies for retail under their brand names.

I don't think it really matters for bottom fishing. I've used Daiwa Samurai, Jerry Brown, Izor, and PowerPro and they all work great. If I had access to different types of braid, i'd use either jerry brown or Izor

I'm with Whammy on this. It's not like you're fighting a 200 lb yellow fin; it's a vermillion rock fish or those highly endangered salmon grouper, fer crying out loud. Did you check the levelwind to see if that has a ragged edge? I've used Power Pro and never had a probelm with fraying (although I have had problems with knots, etc. as it came off the spool).

I guess you could use Blackwater hollow spectra, but I really think it's overkill for local to two day rock fishing.

Boswell,

I checked everything. It has happened with PowerPro. The reel that I use is a Daiwa Saltiga. No levelwind. I have heard that PowerPro splices its line in production. I've also heard of these problems happening to other people.

I definitely saw a splice in the line (that was what I was referring to), but I figured one more knot wasn't going to make much of a difference. I guess the answer is to try anything other than Power Pro and see what happens. I'm guessing that your'e going to fine that there's a chip in a guide that you didn't catch that's causing the line to fray, but maybe not.

By the way; where are you planning on fishing? Local or Mexico?

Boswell,

Look below on the Shimano board. I posted the problem there also. You will see that another person has had the same issue this time with 10lb.

I'm telling you that there is an issue with that line. There may be a bad batch of the stuff out there. The two spools that I purchased were purchased from a reputable dealer Bass Pro.

I use Braid when I am fishing deep say 280ft. or more. I use it here in S. Florida when I go either to the Bahama's or Tortuga's for bottom fishing.

Back in the day, jigging Cherry Banks I rubbed off a couple jigs. Yoyoing along and the line just goes slack. Never even feel the rock.
Fishing shallow under today's regs, one should never have a problem keeping in touch with the jig enough to not burn it off.
Izor, PowerPro, or JB... doesn't matter. The stuff just doesn't take to sharp rocks at all.

So was this post the first and the Shimano the second? LOL. Looks like what you really want to do is ***** about Power Pro; I'm down with that. I feel the exact same way about anything Daiwa makes.

How deep do you fish in So. Florida? Toray/Blackwater makes a magnificent spectra, but it's very expensive. For the reasons I just stated, I would rather walk on my hands through three miles of glass before I buy anything that has "Daiwa" in its name.

Power Pro!

My suggestion is you send me your "bad" powerpro line and let me test it for you.

I had power pro break on the troll with a rapala at <5 knots. Its long gone now or you would be welcome to it, JD.

OK wils that could be a different issue. Had you been casting the rod much and had you had a birds nest or backlash with the outfit before it happened?

With spectra even if you only backlash once, even with a small backlash you can in some cases significantly weakened your line to the point it breaks easily. I have had it happen myself. I was throwing on tuna all day, had a few minor birds nests then hooked up an popped the line off without it taking any drag. The line came back frayed in manner that I could tell it was a section of spectra damaged from the earlier backlash. When spectra snarls up on the reel the spectra pulling against spectra on the spool can significantly wear the line at that spot and produce just the type of thing you describe, as I have seen that first hand.

One thing people do not realise that when something actually damages the line, spectra losses strength rapidly because of it's small diameter. Wear a little bit off eighty mono and you still have lots of mono wear the same amount off eighty spectra your half way through the line.

re: Best BRAID line for Bottom Fishing

I answered this in the Shimano forum but I want to let everyone know that there is no way to splice Power Pro in production. The bump you saw in the line is what is referred to as a "Slub". This is the coating that went on too thick making a bump. It is not a splice. The line is braided by machines and then run through a coating process. It is possible for one spot to get too much coating. It doesn't happen very often but it does happen.

Since we have purchased the company we have made quality control more strict. We already have made several improvements to the line and how it is produced.

Most of the line breaks we see are from:

1- Too much drag pressure (lighter line)
2- Damaged guides or line guide on the reel
3- Backlashes causing the line to cut against itself
4- Line not spooled correctly/underwraps
5- Poor knots
6- Abrasion
