I answered this in the Shimano forum but I want to let everyone know that there is no way to splice Power Pro in production. The bump you saw in the line is what is referred to as a "Slub". This is the coating that went on too thick making a bump. It is not a splice. The line is braided by machines and then run through a coating process. It is possible for one spot to get too much coating. It doesn't happen very often but it does happen.
Since we have purchased the company we have made quality control more strict. We already have made several improvements to the line and how it is produced.
Most of the line breaks we see are from:
1- Too much drag pressure (lighter line)
2- Damaged guides or line guide on the reel
3- Backlashes causing the line to cut against itself
4- Line not spooled correctly/underwraps
5- Poor knots
6- Abrasion
You guys bought Power Pro? Great, another good reason never to have to buy Daiwa again.

Had problems with PP - mistery breaks. Switched to Suffix and will never go back.

Have tried a handful of different solid spectras. Sufix Performance Braid is what I'm liking. Bass to Tarpon. Offshore....JB solid on the small and JB hollow on the large.

re: Best BRAID line for Bottom Fishing
Hi Flagtails50,
65 and 80 lb test for Rockfishing ? I fish NOTHING BUT Power Pro 30 lb test Phantom Red and earlier stuff (white and green) of the same test and have never had a problem. I fish local boats and down to 220 feet or so.
I can't understand why on earth you'd need such heavy line for the depths I mentioned. One of the major and the very reason I use braid is that the small diameter 30 lb test = 8 lb test common mono)and ..... the line will not catch... er ... have more resistance against the current (on a taught line) to the degree of mono. Maybe you're fishing 500 feet in the Bahamas with 5 pounds of weight. wink wink
I didn't catch just where along the line the line parted so kinda hard to narrow things down.
An interesting story .... I was having trouble with a particular line .... I thought ... parting. I know you tested your gear but .... I did the old Q-tip test on the guide inserts and there was no problem !! WELL, after more lost line I finally got it !! It was ONLY during the period when the rod was under a good HEAVY LOAD and or then later strike that the tiny, hereto undiscovered crack opened up or moved or something in the guide insert fraying it ...... later to part with my line, lure, and fishy.
Cursed my lack of imagination but .... whatcha gonna do.
Good luck on finding a solution to your problem.

I have had good luck with PP although I have noticed small lengths, maybe an inch or less, that are smaller in diameter than the rest of the line. That said; I feel the suffix braid is much better in all aspects except cost.

OK wils that could be a different issue. Had you been casting the rod much and had you had a birds nest or backlash with the outfit before it happened?
nope. But it WAS 3 years old.

re: Best BRAID line for Bottom Fishing
Tsurikichi,
I hear what you are saying. However, BOTH times and with both the 65lb and the 80lb PowerPro lines the rods were new. The PowerPro was also new. I had just spooled it on the reel.
I wish that I could say positive things but take a look at how many people are comming up with similar experiences. I will say one positive about PP, I have 80lb on one of my trolling outfits where the line has to be at least 10 years old and I've not had any issues with it. I'm wondering if PP had any quality control issues? Hmmm...and now it was sold to Shimano??? Which may be a good thing.
At this point I am going to send the line back. I still have some of the 65lb. and the 80lb. so I will see what they have to say.
With respect to the line test that I am using for bottom fishing, I am going to scale it down I think to 40lb or 50lb test. I don't want to go to 30lb. I also put about 20ft. of mono as leader.

I also fish locally, and although 30lb braid will [and does] work fine, out of consideration for the crew I now fish a minimum of 50lb - it is much easier to handle if you are involved in any tangles!

re: Best BRAID line for Bottom Fishing
As I said, I have some good memories of fishing with PP but lately there have been issue with the line simply breaking and not just with me. Take a look at how many people are comming out and commenting on the same thing happening to them.
At this point it is a confidence issue so I am looking at my options. PP is not an option any more. I'm not willing to take another chance with them. How does the saying go ..."once same on you (PP), twice same on me". There won't be a third time.
I think that I will be using Tuf-line XP since it is manufatured by Western Fillament who I think makes most of the braded line here in the U.S.

re: Best BRAID line for Bottom Fishing
I only use green PP for everything from tuna, tails, c-bass and for BB'ing for halibut, calicos and all my bottom fishing and I've had no issues at all. Used 40 to 65# green all spring and summer and loaded up on tails to almost 40#'s , c-bass to 48#. Popped 80# PP spectra monday morning on a NICE ling cod but upon inspecting my guides I found one with no insert and one with a broken insert (due to a ling cod slapping the rod to the deck just before the drop I lost the toad ling on). Repaired the guides this morning and will back out fishing PP for lings tomorrow morning.
I'll stick with PP as it's worked awesome for me.

re: Best BRAID line for Bottom Fishing
Also, you never said if you where fishing party boats or private boats ?? Where were you fishing when you had the problems and what do you mean by " hooked to good fish". You talking 20#+ lings, big homegaurd yellowtails or c-bass ??? You can pull pretty damn hard on 65# and it's hard for me to belive the line just frayed and parted. Lots of variables like some one elses spectra cutting yours or a bad knot that broke and looked like frayed line. Shoot ,I've had to tie my PP to my boats cleat to try and break it when hung up on structure. Weird !!!!
