Donate Catch

I want to donate most of my catch on my December trip. Is there a charity that will pickup fish at the dock?

Let the skipper know, and he'll make the arrangements. The Japanese Home will pick up at the landing.

Sarah at Five Star has an orphanage that she uses. She will give you a receipt for use in your tax return.

I think all of the fish processors that meet you at the boat have charities they work with. I have used them in the past and it is very simple, just fill out the normal paperwork and tell the processor that you want to donate. The processor cuts the fish at no charge to you and gets it to the charity they use. When I have done this, I get a Thank You note from the charity and a recite for fillets delivered to them. I have never tried to use the write off for charity but have heard of others doing so. It is that simple no muss or fuss.

All good options there, and increasingly the boats are really on board with releasing fish. Just an additional option I personally really like.

Ancora Imparo, I am still learning.

re: Donate Catch

teo,

You might also think about giving some to the crew to put in their freezer at home and the galley for a meal or two along the way, you will be a popular guy.

The crews get a lot of tuna during the course of the year, but the wahoo and grouper not so much. On the trip, if you have bottomfish stop,a nice Broomtail Grouper will feed the whole boat and there is immense satisfaction in looking down at those plates of grouper w/caper sauce and knowing you had a part in it.

Mention it to the hands and chef early in the trip and see if they would like any, and if so it's your call on which fish. When they bring one over the rail instead of tagging it, tell'em "Crew".
