Cal's 2 Speed
Has anyone sent an Avet to Cal to "hot rod" it? I love these reels but I would like to get a bit more drag plus smooth out the lever. It seems these reels go from no drag to strike with nothing in between.

re: Cal's 2 Speed
Which reel do you have?
More drag? My TRX50 will free spool with over 100 pounds of drag at strike. I can set it anywhere in between to get the drag I want. I suspect that you have not set the drag on your reel correctly. If you have an older model, you may want to send it to the factory in Chatsworth, CA for upgrade if needed and adjustment. I don't know if Cal works on these reels but I have every model they make and I have no need to re engineer them. They work great for me right out of the box.

re: Cal's 2 Speed
Hey Outhouse -
I had Cal work on one of my Avet SDS reels. I heard Garry Sato had sent one in so I called Cal and had him tune it up. He smoothed the drag curve, added an internal cover over the drag, and I had him install a 1:1 low gear.
Beautiful work as usual except and I will do my other SDS that way. I checked it once after a cow to see what the reel would do and it would give 46lbs at full and still had freespool. The one thing I would not do is change the low gear again - just not enough line per crank although it allows a slow, easy grind. Not sure if he has continued with modifying the Avets. Easy to find out - give him a call!

re: Cal's 2 Speed
I have an HX and don't want to invest the extra $ for extra drag of a Raptor. I want to fish 60# on mine and everyone says it will handle it but barely. I also want him to work on what you call the drag curve. All of my reels seem to go from no or little drag to strike. I talked to Eric late today and he indeed says they work on them and they could "possibly" get extra drag. He said one thing they look at are the bearings as Avet uses cheap bearings, which is the first time I have heard that. He said that is one cause of handle torque when the drag is bumped up.

re: Cal's 2 Speed
I have a new HXW Raptor. Haven't fished it yet, but it gets 40# + at strike with free spool and very little load on the handle. Just fyi it took 500yds. of power pro 150 to the top of the spool.

Outhouse - what kind of drag are you getting with the HX? I had a JX that I would have fished 60lb on capacity issues not withstanding (it would get 18-20lb with free spool). Seems like the HX size should get at least 20???
Cleaning up/smoothing the drag curve was worth it ....

re: Cal's 2 Speed
I'm wondering if it's cheaper to sell your HX and put the extra money up and buy a raptor or spend the money getting Cal's to try and get more drag out of a standard reel ?

re: Cal's 2 Speed
I actually just traded a 4/02 for an HX and I don't have it as yet. Eric quoted $75 to work on the reel. So for what I have in the reel plus say $100 if he has to replace a bearing is still far less than a Raptor. I called Cal based on everyone's opinion that the HX will fish 60 but barely. I would like to improve the drag curve on all my Avets.

I also have an HX that I wanted to set up for 60, but the handle binding issue kept it to 50#. I'm also interested in your findings on this, please keep us updated. Thanks

re: Cal's 2 Speed
I should have the reel early next week. When I get it, I will check the drag on it before I ship it off to Cal. They said it would be 4-5 weeks turn around so please be patient, I will give a report when I get it back. I'll actually report my tests before I ship it off.

re: Cal's 2 Speed
Cal is the master at getting all the performance from a reel out of the box.
He works on Avets, Shimanos, Penns, Accurates, and more. More Drag, better free spool, better handles, longer drag curve. He does wonders with re grinding the drag cams. You can actually have a drag curve(incremental choices)from free spool to full strike and beyond. He does what the manufacturers only dreamed about before going into production. The manufacturers can't do all the fine work on the reels in manufacturing unless they charge you much more.
I'm sure you will be happy and better informed about what your reel is actually capable of after having Cal work on your reels.

re: Cal's 2 Speed
All reels fish okay out of the box, some better but since the invent of spectra we are able to get more line on a smaller reel. Just look back to the Penn Internationals. The 30 was meant to fish 30, the 50 would fish 50 etc now we fish 130 on the 30, 150 on the 50 and 200 on the 50W and why is that because of Cal and Erik. They take these reels and make them into Hot Rods no longer the 4door Station Wagon of our parents.
Just think why do people that buy Accurates for over $1000.00 then send them to Cal to make them even better. To me it is well worth the money if your goal is to catch that Cow or Super Cow. JMHO
