re: so what do you think? Balboa BSB incident
The first video made me sick, I won't even start on the second. What an F'N joke! The DFG warden should be fired IMO. I can't even fathom how he came to the conclusion that no law was broken. That guy tortured that awsome fish for at least 15 minutes. You are supposed to take the hook out not insert 3 more grappling hooks and drag it onto the beach.
And to think the DFG hassles free divers for measuring lobsters on the surface.
Thanks for sharing this Mike.

They were all a bunch of fu&%$ng idiots. Partially retarded, who knows? A grappling hook? You got to be kidding. It would have been a different story had it been a seal instead of this graceful beast.

I'm more concerned with half of the comments from people ignorant to fishing and the enviroment. I love the diver who claims stocks aren't what the were 15 years ago because of recreational fishing, maybe he's just a bad diver and heavy breather.
I think we should now require a fishing license for pier angling and maybe this would keep these idiots in check or at least give the DFG someone else to monitor.

Great googly moogly......... The boat owner should also be fined. Revive the fish from the boat. A chain, a rope, and a grappling hook dragged ashore, Ridiculous. The swimmer have proof of license???? The You-Tube and article comments shows alot of ignorance out there. Seems there is alot of bias out there too. If I did that on my boat they would fine me to death. I sometimes think enforcement is on the percieved ability to pay the fine. An inquiry on the incident should be made.
Oh the boater endangering his kids........ Next to the pier. Where were the life guards?
Still shaking my head.

I did not realize that ingnorance of DFG laws was an excuse to be an idiot.
I have fished from that pier since 1964. Back in the day the bait and tackle operation would have handled this situation properly, imho.
I cannot understand how no one on the pier knew what was the right thing to do. Anyone who particpated in placing a hook in the fishes mouth should be severly fined.
Idiots like these give real fisherman and logical boaters a bad rap.

Besides the absolute ignorance of the angler, what bothers me is how the DFG didn't find any violations. They based this decision on a phone interview and the two videos in te OC blog. It appeared to mean that the "angler" was in violation, but what do i know.
However, since then, a third video has surfaced (the one i posted), and I have been told that the case has made its way to the desk of some higher ups in the DFG, and that the investigation has been re opened.
What bothers me the most, is that this will with no doubt, empower the environmental groups, and those in favor of the more extreme MLPA maps. It will also give people who are ignorant about recreational fishing another reason to dislike fishermen. This entire thing makes all of us look bad.
I sent e-mails to the the following people in the DFG.
Captain Liz Schwall

Fish & Game

What i know about Liz Schwall
She has been completely unresponsive to several legitimate questions i have asked her over the years . She seems to be adverse to respond to any inquiry that even remotely challenges the DFG's policies. That is not the quality of public service that makes me comfortable with giving them my full support...
I will be pleasently surprised if they respond to this issue--but if they do it will only be PR purposes

re: so what do you think? Balboa BSB incident
i think it's a shame that it wasn't released by the boat...it was obviously alive and vibrant at that time...you can tell by the eyes, they were looking down at the line in its mouth...it could have been relieved of the air and sent on its way...in the video of the fish on the beach, it was obviously beyond any reviving ....dead eyes looking out at nothing....a real shame.
but on the other hand....lets be real....it's just one fish killed by ignorant people...i really don't see any need for thier heads on the end of pikes...

There was no air bladder problem.

It was a nutsack problem all the way.

re: so what do you think? Balboa BSB incident
Can you imagine what would have happened to the boater if he would have had the balls or the brains to do the right thing and release the fish? They'd have lynched him and cut his kids up for bait. I think this incident, video, the whole pathetic spectacle is a wonderful illustration of just how closures were made possible and why real fishermen, like most of the people on sites like this, will continue to have the things they love most restricted and taken away from them.I believe,we're the minority. I think most people using our resources either don't know any better and could care less about taking the time to learn or they just don't give a flying fork about anything but what makes them look or feel good, whatever the cost.
Furthermore, the DFG has been a joke ever since I learned what the letters stood for. When I was a kid we saw some guys poaching abalone where we surfed and fished everyday. We tried to do the right thing and ran home to call the police, who told us to call the DFG who just so happened to be closed. Now I have a new meanng for the letters, but if I printed them I'd be banned for sure. Ain't hard to figure out though
