What length of rod is ideal for cow jigging ?
I changed the title of this thread to discuss general tackles suitable for cow jigging/popping as the interest of cow jigging and popping is growing.
This discusiion is not to bebate to use spinners ore not for cow, but to discuss what will be done to land a cow effectively with spinners in reasonable time.
So I advise not to give any negative comments of using spinners, which has been discussed fully on the other site and concentrate on what tackles should be used.
I used 8' GUSA Wahoo for cow jigging on the Qualifier 105 in 2005.
Since then, I have experimented Japanese style short rods for tuna jigging. Still many East Coast fishermen use long rods to fish with East Coast style 'up and down' jigging technique, but I admit I now use short Japanese style jigging rods whenever possible as it is very convenient and I can jig long hours without fatigue. The real advantage of short rods are when I fight as short rods give better leverage for me.
As most long range boats' rail postion is high, it can be disadvantage if the rod is too short.
I'd like to hear your opinions to get fedback for upcoming cow jigging and popping trip.

Just out of curiosity, how short is short?
I know most of the LR guys love a long rod when it comes to jigging, but their style is a little different then yours I suppose.
I dont have any cow experience, so I cant comment on that, but I do love me an 8' rod for fishing yoyo iron.

I want to know how the Thai folks attached their leaders, knots crimps serves and how they attached their hooks/jigs and poppers.
It would be advaentageous to learn that part of their aresenal.
And how long of leaders they used.

Most heavy models of Japanese jigging rods are 4'8" - 5'6".
I believe fishermen from Thailand on the Royal Star used JM Three Kings rod, Hots One Pitch Slider and Shimano Blue Rose jigging rods which are 5' - 5'6".

The most popular knots by Japanese style jig fishermen are Mid Knot, PR Knot or FG knot. I heard all fishermen from Thailand use PR knot using Shout PR knot bobbin. I heard they used pretty long leader lines on the trip, but we usually use short 10' - 20' leader line.

As you know.It all depends on the build of the guy fishing and even his style of fighting fish, as to what size rod is best. For me ,to bring in a cow in 'reasonable time' ,my go to rod would be a Zenaq MB-B60H .

Zenaq MB-B60H should handle cow. Personally, I don't like too stiff jigging rods even for cow.

With the advance of new technologies, light rods can hanle bigger tuna than ever before. I tested light 200g rod for 160 - 170 lbs bluefin in NC last Wed. The rod is not designed for big tuna, but it showed that even 200g rod have enough strength and durability though it lacks in backbone needed.
In my opinion, quality 450g - 500g rod can handle cow.
200g rod in action for 160 - 170 lbs bluefin
It took about 25 minutes on 25 lbs drag to get the leader for releasing.

Thats exactly why I qualified my choice as being for me. I prefer a six foot rod and I like to really put a lot of pressure onto a fish ,I find this rod ideal for me,but it's definatly not for everyone.

I'm curious to know if you have tried out the JM 'three kings' rods yet ? I was thinking they look great rods to take on the long range boats as their softer tip would give yellowtail a chance of a good fight and these along with YFT and the odd wahoo are going to be prime jigging targets .They look like they might have enough backbone to fight a cow in the 'H' model. I've had no chance to handle one yet ,but they sure look good.

re: What length of rod is ideal for cow jigging ?
What a great question. I guess I would like to see a Frankenrod. Take the Jm Max 450g add 363.6 mm to the butt section. To effectively make it a 7 foot rod. Keep the Reel seat where it would be normally place on the 5'8" rod. The Addititional butt section for using the rail to fight the Cow.(Reel placement would need to be experimented with for spinners)
The question is how much stress the rod can take if the reel is placed above the rail????(spinner)

Just because I like this article. Showing traditional rail rodding technique.

Are their any Big Game Rod manufactures using Carbon Nano Tube Technology? It will eventially change the way we fish.
Just Talkin from my butt.

Yes, you can give more pressure with a stiffer rod as long as you can handle it. You are right. Everybody has different fighting style and different physics, and rod selection should be different accordingly. I am not strong and pretty old. So my choice of rods for cow are not too stiff though it should have enough backbone.

I heard Thai fishermen on the Royal Star used JM Three Kings rods.
JM Power Spell rods are traditionally fully parabolic, but JM Three Kings rods in between parabolic and fast action though they still maintain same maximum power (33kg/73 lbs) even they use lighter tip for JM Three Kings. It seems they use different materials for Three Kings. I think the Three Kings rods are ideal for yellowtail or tuna upto 150 lbs.

re: What length of rod is ideal for cow jigging ?
Jigging sessions for Canyon Runners Seminars, in which 400 fishermen attended in Long Island, NY is finally over. I was very tired after 5 jigging sessions, but I felt great as I contributed something to sincere audience to learn about tuna jigging.
I had a chance to talk with Capt Tim of the Royal Star the other day. He seems he was overwhelmed by Thai fishermen's performace with spinning reels on the recent tagging trip to Revillagigedo Islands.
I told him they would have landed cow with spinning gears if they had encountered cow.
As some members know, I have been planning to arrange a charter to fish Hurrincane Banks for jigging and popping. After I talked with Tim, I am inclined to charter the Royal Star for 10 day jigging and popping trip to Revillagigedo Islands out of Cabos in April, 2011.
I am going to set up a new thread to discuss about the trip if it happens as I plan.
