Which is preferable, Manual head or an Electric head?
I have my 24' skipjack FB (1980) in Mexico and need to install a head...the mechanic said electric is far better but I don't know if I need to spend the extra bucks...any input? Thanks, API Boat Boomer

Well, here's a general summary of your options, in order of increasing cost:
- A bucket...
- A porta-pottie :/
- A manual head, eg: Jabsco pump model
- A electric pump head, eg: similar to the manual above with a pump
- A Vacuflush, which is a vacuum-pressurized head system.
I have had a Vacuflush on both of my Skippies, the 25'er and now my 28' FB model. The great thing about these is they are nearly impossible to clog, and are about as trouble free a head as you can find, IMO. I have a wife and 3 daughters... you know how much TP these gals use ... If you've ever had to take apart the head plumbing to clean clogged sheit out of the system... well, you should appreciate what I'm sayin
I bought a Vacuflush head system on ebay for a steal for my 28'... for the 25', it was a 2nd hand system off craigslist... yeah, you can do it right without breaking your bank. Here's an explanation of how it works.
Here's the company's website
Hey, you asked...
Happy boating!

I have a vacuflush head and can recommend them highly, but they are a lot of money. I have a neighbor (I live on my boat) that has returned his electric Jabsco for the third time in less than a year. I think a good manual is the best value.

OK, This one is right in my wheelhouse.......As I had a 24' Skippy and we stepped up to a 43' Trawler. Miss the Skippy for it's speed, and flexibility and fishability. but love the comforts of home as well. With the Skippy, we had a manual head with a holding tank and a macerated pump to dump while underway. This, in my opinion was the best system given the type of set up you have. You can pump mid channel while underway. We do this with our trawler with both holding tanks at mid channel with a flip of a switch. Stick with the manual pump head, understanding that the Joker valve will need to be replaced occasionally. Other than that, assuming you have the House/starting battery system set up, you should be good! Happy Pumping!

the best toilet is a bucket with some salt water in it and dumped over the side in open water....all heads develop odors from the holding tank, tubing and vents...if it is an electric toilet with saltwater flushing, the organisms die in the toilet and inside the parts, creating another smell source....only reason to have a toilet is if womenfolk are onboard....then, I would use a small camping tollet with bags that can be sealed shut and removed later..saves lots of grief in the long run....

Better be able to use a bucket on my ride as I'm not cleaning anything left behind by others if you know what I mean.
