Guadalupe Island in July?

I know around October is the time that the San Diego boats fish Guadalupe Island. Could the big ahi show up early to the island this year? Looks like they are offshore.Smile And do any boats check out the island in July and August to see the conditions.

Thanks.

re: Guadalupe Island in July?

The Lupe season usually starts in July as that's when the water gets warm enough to hold the yellowfin. Ofcourse water temps vary year to year, but more often than not mid to late July will produce the 70 degree water we need. August, September and early October are prime time and the bite sometimes extends into early November. When the first big storms come down from the gulf of Alaska the wind blows and the water turns cold and the Lupe is done for another year.

As for the boats checking it out, they can do that with their daily sea temp fax and don't really need to go there in person. If you want to plan a trip that might go there, shoot for late July or Aug./Sept. October can be great but like early July it can be too cold if the winter storms get an early start. A five day is o.k. but a six day is best. Don't pick a seven day or longer as those trips will go to the rocks.

The Lupe is a bit of a run. If the fishing's good closer it becomes a less likely destination. Then there's the whole water temps question, covered nicely by rebite. A 7 in July or August is most likely to hit Guadalupe, IF the conditions are right. If you have a trip scheduled or planned I'd call the office for some input/advice.

We ended up at the Lupe one early July. We needed a place to get out of the weather. Lo and behold, really good bigger models YFT fishing. Another July, checked it out. The bigger models were there but finicky. Only a handful were caught. Nice yellowtail were on the bite though. Yeah, I think late July would be a good time.

I've fished it in July & October and it's always been pretty good to me.

The permit thing blew but I think that was repealed with the new visa thing, yes?

I'm on an 8-day in early July, maybe I'll have an update...

re: Guadalupe Island in July?

I'm hoping that my 6-day in Early August hits the Lupe.

I haven't been there since an epic 6-day in 2007 on the Shogun with Bruce Smith. We didn't pull the anchor for over three days. Bruce called in the rest of the fleet on the second day. We caught YFT (a few well over 100#) in the daytime on dines and YT on dropper-looped macks at night. I think we had lines in the water all around the clock. We got our fill, so no one took a long-soaked hand-off offered up by Bruce on the third day.

7 days in August ought to be great, nothing like having a lot of options...

I hope to hang my share, but I have a torn rotator-cuff (surgery for scheduled for 25-Aug) so I won’t be pulling much.

Guadalupe Island permits have hit a big snag. Contact your boat for further updates.

As I said in another thread, some boats do well at the 'lupe even around Christmas time, brining home YFT over the century mark.

The boats usually only go to Guadalupe that time of the year if there are no BFT or albies to be had, or if Cedros isn't kicking out the yellowtail. This is on an average 5 day trip or so. Boats that are on longer trips are going farther south and won't stop at Guadalupe without good reason, generally speaking.

re: Guadalupe Island in July?

i was on the shogun for a 7 day last year and we spent the better part of the trip at the lupe'. 1 day offshore after checking in at ensenada.2 days north end fishing trophy yellows,2 days fighting sharks for big tuna at south end, and a half day offshore before heading back to ensenada then home. great trip! bruce had a plan and it payed off big time. tuna to 120# and yellows to 45#. the boats that went to rocks didn't do so well!

re: Guadalupe Island in July?

I know people who are putting their money down on fall 5 and 6 day trips just to fish Guadalupe Island. If we have an "obstacle" with fishing that Island again the landings/boats should be upfront about it now and not in Aug or Sept when so many good trip are over.

Just my two cents.
