electric downriggers

Do you have a seperate battery just for you downriggers? It seems that if your raising and lowering them for a couple hours they would really drain your batteries.

RE: electric downriggers

I have Scotty Electrics and use a seperate battery. I fish 6 days a week and charge the battery every 8 or 10 days. The battery is not connected to the elctrical circuit in the boat(just a extra battery as a spare). My kicker has a small alternator in it and if I were to connect the downriggers to the batteries in the circuit, I'm sure the alternator would keep the batteries up. Most of my friends here on the Oregon coast DO NOT have a seperate battery.

RE: electric downriggers

We also have a pair of Scotty electric downriggers. We see no reason to create a seperate electical system for them. We use two group 29 deep cycle starting batteries for the items that came standard on the boat and a seperate group 4 house battery for electronics. How often do you raise the downriggers anyway??? I'm sure the Scotty's use far less power than our anchor winch.
