Bayrunner 21 Project
So I took the plunge and purchased Jim's Bayrunner 21

Currently the decks off and I'm going to have to build a bait tank and either a console or house. The hull is perfect, and the engines sound and with the Merc 135 he got around 4.5 mpg. Jim used to run this boat to Clemente, and I've fished with him out of Avila on it.
I love the boat but on a rough day with a cross wind these boats can be wet. For that reason I've always thought they would be ideal with a pilot house.
I'm thinking I might go that route. Maybe something along the lines of this one:

That's a 21 but I might go a little smaller on the house with plenty of room to walk around. My take is the labor involved in a house would not be much more then the labor of building a console and T Top. About the same material and labor wise.....so why not.
Any thoughts as to the Pro's and cons of a Pilot house on a 21 foot skiff. I.E. what would you prefer.
Jim

Confucius say , A house is better than no house.
That pic looks like a good set up. I have never had a fish on that made me walk around our Farralon. Point being, make the Pilot house as large as you can without looking weird, sleeping inside is such a great option.

IGÇÖve always liked those bayrunners. I think they are the perfect baja boat. Jim, IGÇÖm sure you will come up with something great but I would definitely go with the pilothouse. Since IGÇÖve got mine I canGÇÖt believe I even wanted a walkaround. As to size well youGÇÖve spent enough time on boats to know what works. Go with what feels right.

Looks interesting, you obviously have the skills to accomodate, how about the weight differential, both overall and topside? Will power have to change for weight variences?

RE: Bayrunner 21 Project
Bayrunner made a cuddy for those, storage is always key, but a small cuddy might expand the trips you can take on her. Walk around is great, but you don't need a huge amount of space up there. My Cabo is 21', and has a 1' step up to the bow to accommodate the bunk below, an outstanding setup for all around fishing, and secure storage of gear. An alum cuddy with a pilot house is an all-weather machine, plus you can tow it with your bicycle.. Maybe a yack rack to yack the islands.. Could you make a bracket for the outboard to afford a little more cockpit?

Looks like a great project for you.
My 22' Alumaweld is a lot heavier than the Bayrunner but it is still really wind sensitive with the house on it.
But you know that.
Good luck on your new project.

I vote pilot house for sure. I am sure with your fabrication and innovation experience we will have many progress reports to look forward to. Looks like a great project Jim. Keep us posted.

Jim,
Be very careful with that hull. Bayrunner tried to put a walk around cabin on one and it turned out to be a killer, literally. I was almost ready to pull a trigger on one back in the day. Just be careful about too much weigh forward.

RE: Bayrunner 21 Project
Good points. The Bayrunner hull might be too lightweight to go up, some creative framing or balasting might be in order- extra fuel? I did not know the cuddys on those Bayrunners were a flop, they were sure priced right for the size.

I'm sure she will be a one-of-a-kind fishing machine by the time you are done working your magic on her. Have fun.

RE: Bayrunner 21 Project
I was thinking a lightweight carbon composite "sport cabin" would be cool. Then I remembered composite and aluminum get along like iron and magnesium. MAJOR corrosion problems.

RE: Bayrunner 21 Project
Jim, Here's my 22ft walkaround Bayrunner.Ive owned this one since 1995 and before this one had a 20ft CC Bayrunner for 12yrs.I guess you can say that I have some experience with these boats. If interested you are welcome to check it out for ideas toward your project. I'm impressed with all your other projects that you post and looking forward to what you come up for this one.

As far as these hulls being deadly,I'll have to disagree with that statement. This hull seems to like a lot of weight forward, with that being said my last Bayrunner which was a 1984 20 footer could be dangerous in "following seas" when you surfed down the face of the swell the bow would decide to go off sideways:o That got pretty hairy a couple of times. But that was then, with the 22 footer they redesigned the shape of the bow and have never noticed any of these tendencies Here's my old 20 footer.Notice how the shape of the bow is sort of a steep angle? The redesigned hulls are not as steep and the "V" extends the full length of the bottom.

Getting back to your question I would try to build a pilot house because my canvas/isenglass is a pain in the a** to maintain(repairs) but totally necessary in my opinion.
PM me if you have any questions.
Scott
