RE: Collecting Names of 'Kid Friendly' Public Sportfishing Boats
First let me say that this is a GREAT idea.
I second the Nautilus vote. We've done charters with family & friends as well as open party on this boat...always do a good job.
I'd like to add a few as well....
The Patriot out of Newport will run 1/2 days in the winter...their deckhand Bob is awesome, probably one of the nicest deckie's I've ever had the pleasure to fish with. Great with kids and dude has a great attitude! I believe the skipper is Robbie....admittedly haven't ridden the boat since last winter so I'm not 100% sure but I saw Bob getting off the boat a few weeks ago so he must still be around. I try to take out my kid sister as often as I can and those guys have always performed great!
Only ridden the Ultra twice but I can say that we did a charter with them with the whole fam.....the whole crew was outstanding with us.
Might seem like I'm a Newport Landing homer but the overnight boats I used to ride out of Davey's Locker are no longer there and I haven't been out of Dana Point for a while. Fished 1/2 day out of all three Long Beach landings but I'm not not ready to recommend any of them just yet.
Took my sister & little brother out a couple times each on overnighers to Cat in 2003 & 2004 on the ElDorado out of LB Sportfishing. They were great with us...especially a skipper that goes by Beeker, I think his real name is Craig if I recall.
I won't mention any bad experiences I've had with crew behavior unless I see their boat show up on this list.

RE: Collecting Names of 'Kid Friendly' Public Sportfishing Boats
Hi there smitty_in_socal,
Thank you ever so much for the input. As you were careful to note, and I can't emphaize enough, the sporties, in general, operations, skipper and crew composition..... are not a 365 day operation,i.e the same personnel or service, cannot be duplicated.
It'll be a pleasure (knowing full-well your admirable level of integrety) to post your nominations. Most appreciated!
I don't think I have got a single self-serving suggestion as yet.
AS....... we well understand, it's all for the future of fishing, to some degree, as we knew it..... in the past and..... know it now!
I'll post these tomorrow. 1) Patriot (1/2 day) Newport Sportfishing, Robbie/Bob Skip/deckie 2) Ultra 3) El Dorado, Long Beach Sportfishing (Skipper is nicknamed Beeker probably Craig/skipper
I don't want to start anything but ..... if anyone has any bad ... recent ..... trips with kids.... on boats that I've listed, I would appreciate a report!

RE: Collecting Names of 'Kid Friendly' Public Sportfishing Boats
Hi there Hanapah,
Thank you for the information. Added it straight-away! I'll usually include the skipper of a boat (even if they're not the regular guy) if his name appears in the actual fishing report.
Part of the reason I do this is because...... just the boats name alone does not make for a true reflection on the operation. And that works both ways when some boats rep is being hammered and then come to find out ... a relief or brand new guy was the skipper! Doh!

Pacific Queen 1.5 day
tsurikichi,
I did not read thought the posts, so if I am repeating someone else's post, sorry.
I don't have alot of Party Boat experience, but I took my Son who is 10 on the Pacific Queen back in Early July, and the Captain and Deckies took great care of him. The captain gaffed Jacks first Albacore...I will be using them again in the future...My son will always remember that trip, and so will I...My son always asks if we can do it again.
Jacks 1.5 day trip 30 + pound albie, baited, hooked and landed by his self.

RE: Collecting Names of 'Kid Friendly' Public Sportfishing Boats
I posted on the Public Sportfishing board about my experience on the Nautilus out of Newport Landing. The skippper and deck hand were very good with my 10-year old daughter, and I would recommend them for people with kids.

RE: Collecting Names of 'Kid Friendly' Public Sportfishing Boats
Hi there CharlieM,
Will do. I rode the Blue Horizon a few times when it was up here in Long Beach/Pierpoint! I still have a pass earned some 5 years ago (now expired) from the boat! Nice ride and they have bunks too!
I rode the Liberty today and I can say that between the skipper Anthony and myself we gave the one and only little girl on the boat lots of fish to crank on! As stated in other posts. Liberty may be a good bet to take care of kids right!
thanks again,
tsurikichi

RE: Collecting Names of 'Kid Friendly' Public Sportfishing Boats
It's nice to see the list for kid-friendly boats/crews. But I just gotta say as I was growing up in the 80s as a young teen, I have NEVER experienced any helpful crew members or skippers. Though, it could've been my physical characteristics. All of these experiences of mine were out of 22nd-Grande, Ports O'Call-Freedom, Queens Wharf-Toronado, Redondo-Cutty Shark Redondo Special City of Redondo Blackjack, Malibu-Lenbrooke on 1/2 day trips and Catalina overnighters with my dad. Now, at 36, I still don't feel like going on open party trips...too many jerks who need a reality check. Now, I just stick to charters.

RE: Collecting Names of 'Kid Friendly' Public Sportfishing Boats
Hi there velozo155,
In the 80's ??!! LMAO You think it was bad then?! HOW ABOUT ! In the 50's and 60's it was every kid for themselves as far as MANY of the crews and passengers were concerned on the moo moo's in my experience! 'Kids are to be seen and not heard' sort of thing!
NOT everyone...... in general, just a little more old-school, school of hard knocks, survival of the fittest! Ha ha ha .... the stories......
Back to now. I can understand your feelings as I too despise the 'Alpha-dog' mentality of some guys that fish on the open-party boats. However, in retrospect ...... consider this ...
Times have changed and many operations/operators see the need to treat the dwindling numbers of anglers, including kids a little better than they might have in past decades. It's the battle of the independence a skipper has with commercial fishing vs. Being forced, thru economic$ or otherwise, to have to cater to angler$ want$ and demand$.
Interestingly .... if one rides the moo moo's enough, you begin to sort out the boats that have the kinder and gentler regulars who (have been attracted to the boat by the crews positive treatment)often set a more friendly tone to the fishing experience on deck.
One way in which to protect yourself from 'problems'is to have a number of like-thinking buddies hook up and go out regularly. 'Clique' ..... maybe ... but the pushy hot-shots, bullies, and trash talkers don't like numbers much.
Lastly, I truly believe (and in my experience in the last coupla years) that the younger generation of skippers have a different view of young people than I certianly had at their age. I think this is a positive thing.
Could be wrong but ...
Would be great to hear reports on your charters.
