RE: Collecting Names of 'Kid Friendly' Public Sportfishing Boats
Hi RonBeach,
Thanks for the input ! As you know, I am one of the biggest moo-moo advocates on the boards! I see everyone is bundled up in that great shot !! One reason I suspect few have mentioned those boats is ...
As lots of parents take their kids out fishing during Summer vacation and other peak catching times .........
Reason: These two boats (specifically) pack 100+, yes .... 100+ (I watch the load counts year in and year out !!!) during some of the times when kids can most easily get out ! Check the archive if in doubt. Mind you .. I ain't raggin' on the quality of crew or skipper .. maybe more on the landings policies. (Again, if in doubt, check the archives)
Anybody wanna take their kid out on a boat with 99 other anglers?
Now with that said ....... outside of those crowded times, with the large size of those boats, and your vouching for crew and skipper... maybe we'll get some more positive input on the kids!!

ALOHA SPIRIT and ISLAND SPIRIT great crews and the guys running the boats know how to find fish. Both these boats are run out of Capt. Hooks in Oxnard.
Right on! I was going to mention these two bosts . . . now I don't have to. Great Captains and great crews. The Coroloma is no longer at Capt Hooks [it fishes out of Ventura Harbor - when it goes out] and the Lenbrooke is nolonger operating.

I totally agree with you in regards to not wanting to take a kid out on a boat with up to 100 other (T)anglers....there are quite a few boats that take ALOT less people, with crews that are just as good.
The Ultra, out of Newport Landing, is a great little Delta that only takes 8 anglers on an overnight or 1-1/2 to 2-day trip, and the crew totally caters to much smaller loads.
The crew is top notch, and will take a young angler under their wing to help that youngster learn the ropes.

My God guys...you left out TWO of the ALL TIME KID FRIENDLY BOATS
since 1986...FREELANCE out of Davey's Locker...1/2 Day WESTERN PRIDE
too, both have brought up 1000's of kids, parents and deadhead's
turning into deckhands, and some into Captains..all of it!
GREAT BOATS AND CREWS! THEY BOTH GO YARD TO GET KIDS ON FISH!
The SMILES SAY IT ALL! Out of Newport, these are the top 2 kid boats!
There's probably more PARENTS that started fishing these 2 boats now
bringing THEIR KIDS than any 2 boats in the OC area..great tradition
Absolutely, 100% agree on that

Advice: Always call the landing (Daveys in this case) and ask how many people are booked on boat X on day X. This will give you an idea how many are going out. I went out on both of these boats several times this summer and if I remember correctly, the most we ever had was in the 60's...I don't think I saw 75 gunny's on that boat ever. Am I hallucinating? RonBeach??
Also, the Freelance tends to run Limited Load 3/4 days on the weekends during the high season..I believe its limited to 45 people, so consider that

Hi mydragonfire,
Yes, I always check twice !! ha ha ha
For your two trips .... I have no doubt your memory servers well.
BUT ....here's the backup to what I said .... I actually did a day by day survey on a weekly basis of ALL THE LANDINGS and the number of patrons on each SPECIFIC from SD to MDR for TWO MONTHS last Summer. I even gave special hoots/press to the the boats that piled a hundred anglers on one boat on one day on one run in my weekly reports!
Again ... your experiece was limited ... my extensive! 976 Tuan and Sportfishingreports are pretty good sources besides the landings themselves.
Await your moo-moo reports ....

re: Collecting Names of 'Kid Friendly' Public Sportfishing Boats
Hi fishloose2,
Thank you. In general, I've found that smaller boats that depend more on charter business than the daily, open-party 1/2 and 3/4-day boats to be more likely to center on family and kids that they take out !
That's not to say there are not unfriendly smaller boats just a generality that I'm found valid. Whatever the case ... a good boat is a good boat and regardless of size or operation .... it deserves recognition .... which I will on the next update.
thanks,
tsurikichi

Has anyone fished Kings Harbor lately out of Redondo? Wondering if they still rent the skiffs out of Rocky Point.

I'd add the Dana Pride (Dana Wharf Sportfishing) to your list. Personally, I don't like the boat (too crowded in the summer + lots of rent a rods = a mega-disaster anytime the boat fishes offshore or there's a wide open sculpin bite
But the boat is very comfortable, and the crew is professional, full-service, and kid-friendly (it's the only boat I know of where they allow a mackerel to be considered in the jackpot). For parents who don't like to fish, the galley sells white wine and margaritas, which I think is pretty unusual.
The boat does 1/2 and 3/4 day trips, with an occasional day trip (5-5) offshore in the summers.

Definitely! Tommy and George run a first class operation. I do agree with you that it is a cattle boat, but the crew is excellent, and the deckhands, Patrick and Marcus, are the best since a couple of guys 4 or 5 years ago.

The San Diego out of Seaforth. I took my nephew (10 yrs old) on an open party offshore trip in August. Slow day, I hooked an alby on the slide and handed it off to him. He got hopelessly tangled with a regular and the guy cut his fish off so my nephew could land his. The crew and regulars are kid friendly and my nephew's hooked for life.

SEAFORTH Landing - the 1/2 and the 3/4 boats.
I have taken neices & nephews on both . . . . took cub scouts on 1/2 day . . . took several families from work out on (non-squid) summer twilight and had a great time - adults were happy and kids were hooked - one adult was a pathologist and she and crew did a mini-autopsy/lecture about fish parts to the kids (who loved it ... "this is a 3 chamber heart, etc"...)
