New Years 'Butts!

What's up y'all? OCHarvz (Rich) here... Wow, I haven't posted on this board in years. We moved to the east coast a few years ago and I spent some time overseas, but I'm back now...

This board used to be really active and while I recognize a few old names (Charlie, Jscrib) I'm surprised at how little posting goes on anymore on the surf page. What's up with that? Do you guys still have allcoast get-togethers like we did in the old days? I remember a few good outtings back in the day, and I swear there was a lot more posting...

Anyway, got out for the first time this year and headed up to Long Beach for a shot at the Halibut I've seen on the board recently. I started throwing swimbaits for a while, walking up the beach for 1/4 mile or so with no luck. Headed back to where I started and switched to a drop-shot fluke, fishing it static and just teasing the line. I farmed my first good bite after a few minutes before landing a little fly-swatter sized 'butt a couple minutes later. A few casts later I got nailed on the drop and started getting spooled. I was fishing 4 lb. test so I started getting nervous because I was getting hammered for a minute or so. I knew it was a hali by the fight so I let her run me a couple more times before finally wearing her out and coaxed in a decent legal fish.

I'm usually a catch & release kind of guy, but decided this one looked good for the grill. Smile

Just thought I would share and try to stir up some more activity on this board. I fish 50-75 times a year and I used to get my motivation from reading other peoples' posts here. I understand concerns about giving up secret squirrely spots, etc. but c'mon guys! I'm always looking to hook up with anyone else interested in getting out and getting a line wet. I'd also love to see this board return to its former glory!

Drop me a line if you are ever looking for someone to hit the surf with in OC or elsewhere...

Nice hali....

You should try the seal beach jetty (far south one...near the big fish tackle shop) Theres lots of halis there...but most are shorts. The bite pretty much all day long there. And theres perch there too...never get any but I always see other guys getting lucky is that small area.

re: New Years 'Butts!

That Hali looks dee-lish! And kudos on killing it with 4lb. I too hope these boards pick up, and I'm gonna try to post on here more as well. My only New Year's resolution this year is to use every function of my fishing license possible. Stamps, cards, tags, everything. Hell I'd better get my $$$ worth with what they're charging now, Holy Shnikeys.
