Giant squid

Got an email Fri night that there were giant squid off of Newport. Last time they were here, I couldn't get out and really wanted to catch one as I have never caught one. My cousin and I took our boys out sat night to try and find them. Since I haven't had the boat out in a while, took us a lot longer than we thought to get ready and didn't get to the area till about midnight. Found a sporty out of Newport that was just heading in...did't think they would have been out so late. Dropped the jigs and it was on. I was surprise how close to shore they were. Only about 2 miles off shore in about 600 feet of water. We were catching them at 200 feet. They proved to be a little too much for oursons, and after 7 or 8, we had had about enough. It was really fun to pull on something that hard for a change. I made the mistake of gaffing my first one and lifting it out of the water head first. If I had jumped in the water I would have been drier. This thing soked me with water and ink. Anyways, I have a cooler full of steaks and enough cut bait to last for the next five years. I have them steaked into about 6x6 inch square and they are about an inch thick. I also took the membrane off both sides before I shrink wrapped them. Now not sure what to do. I think I need to pound them before cooking? Maybe cut into thin strips, bread, and fry?

re: Giant squid

Prepare as follows:

Pre-heat pan with 1/4 inch garlic infused olive oil.

Lightly salt and pepper squid steaks.

Roll in cat litter (for extra crunchiness).

Fry on medium heat for 3 minutes per side.

Enjoy!

Note: Be sure to wear goggles to protect your eyes from the amonia during cooking and eating.

Seriously though, the strips do make great bottom fishing bait...

re: Giant squid

Calamari! mmmmm good, quite a few years ago, on the City of Redondo, with Rick Ofienger has skipper, we pulled up to the bait barge inside the Harbor! And Rick came out fo the wheelhouse and said hey anyone who wants to catch a giant squid, drop down right here! Well we never left the harbor, they were not as large as yours, maybe the biggest was 15-20lbs,Rick went back in the wheelhouse and came back out with raingear, and just enjoyed the show and never stopped laughing! Good TimesupAs mentioned thats was many years ago, and even so I kinda got my fill of pulling on those, I'll stick to the finny species now, glad you had a great time!

re: Giant squid

Good job and thank you for at least lessening the humboldt population by 8. up We need to rid our local waters of these voracious predators as they wreak havoc on our local fishing spots from top to bottom. Just read Corey's report from Mexico and you'll know what I mean.

re: Giant squid

Did you guys stay out all night? Or did you leave the squid on the boat, and come back later?

I'm just glad the squid aren't here during the Sand Bass spawn like a few seasons ago.

re: Giant squid

Sounds like you guys had a blast. My only concern is that you caught those at night and it is daylight when you took pictures with squids. My understanding is that if you don't clean and ice immediately they are not very tasty. Tell us how the eating part went.

We stuffed them in the bait tank while we slept, and they were all still alive when we started cleaning them. Infact the squid in the photos are alive. As soon as we steaked them up they went on ice

After I try it, I'll let you know if I agree. But I do have a ton of bait!

We caught them about midnight, went back to Dana Point and went to sleep around 3. Woke up at 7:39 and started cleaning. Left the squid in the bait tank so they were still alive in the morning.

re: Giant squid

Good job, that's a great way to store them until cleaning, alive! I've heard if you don't remove the stomach contents immediately the stomach acid leaks into the meat after death? I know restaurants in Mexico do a good job of preparing the squid, myself I have tried numerous recipes and none have worked out well?

Thanks for the report. Hook Up! Cory

re: Giant squid

Since, they were kept alive until filleted, they should theoretically have the best chance of being edible. I hope you post a follow up on how they tasted. If we can find a way to make these squids more edible, then more people will go after them and just maybe we will make a small dent in their population. With all these squids around, I can't help but wonder what is happening to our local fishery.

re: Giant squid

For 2 lbs. of squid. 4 teaspoons of baking soda disolved into 6 quarts of water. Soak for 4 hours in refridgerator. Rinse and wash. Soak in 6 quarts of fresh water 1 hour. Rinse. Pat dry and then air dry for a hour. Cook em up.

Baking soda will tenderize but also nuetralize it's strong taste. Do not use the box your wife placed in your refridgeratorToungue
