2-26 Friday Bassin

It looked like a break before the storm was gona hit us so I called Rich-Taxfree because he still is boatless !! Left Cerritos at 5:00 to Davies launch at almost high tide. Decided to make the run South to Newport Reef and the Pipe area. A beautiful Red sunrise and the bass were hungry , a fish almost every cast for 2 hours !!!We had just passed a large rock and I threw olong side of it and worked the clear redflake swimbait slowly along side. WHAM , i,m hit hard and I,m not gettin much line on the reel. I told Rich it was BIG-very big-probably a black seabass. Took awhile and finally got it up and Wow, a nice halibut !! It was 20 lb on the Boga grip .
The bite kept goin with Rich gettin the largest bass of the day, a nice 6 lb sandy . Lots of fish between 3 and 4 1/2 lbs with small calicos mixed in !! The drift was offshore when we started but turned from the West at a raging 3-4 miles an hour !! Only a 1-2 ft swell and almost glass all day. Finally died down so we made our way up to Izors for 4 fish in the next 3 hours !! Called it a day at 2:00pm and still glass with NO current. Just another great day on the water with friends and a bowl of shrimp, NICE !! BTW , we had a casuality on the boat-both of us was fishing 2 rods and we had many triples and quads, while Rich was reeling one in the other rod got bit and pulled into the water-Darn-an old calcutta 400 and rod gone !!! Around 70-80 bass total all released except the halibut !!

Awesome, Lal! Fish tacos at Lal’s! Toungue

Bummer about the lost rod, but, glad you both had a good time.

Meanwhile, I’m stuck at home, gluing down hardwood flooring. The only thing I’m going to catch this weekend ….is a buzz Roll

Nice Flatty Lal.When I was diving a couple weeks ago I saw a couple halibut laying on a big pile of rocks next to a sandy bottom. They blended in to the rocks real well.Good ambush spot.Good call fishing the edge of the rocks.

re: 2-26 Friday Bassin

Lal buddy, we sure had a great day on the water. Calm before the storm. If I had to give up an outfit to the ocean master, I'm glad it wasn't my Curado300DSV. The reel I gave up was my Shimano CT400. It was my first wallbangin' reel. I caught alot of fish with it, including a 60 lb YFT on the Big Game 90 several years ago. It was a tough little reel, and I will miss it. I hope the fish that took it overboard is able to free himself from the Swimmie so he can tell all of his buddies what a puss of a fisherman I am!! LOL!!

That Halibut was such a pleasant surprise. We both were convinced that it would be a BSB that would come up. It saw the gaff coming and moved to fast for me to stick it the first time, so Lal repositioned the big dog and I stuck him on Strike TWO!! My family enjoyed some of that baby for Sunday dinner, along with a Sargo that Lal also caught. They were both delicious! Thanks Lal!! I'm not sure what the fish count was for the day(nor do I care), but we sure did have fun catching a bunch of fat Sandies and Calicos.

I'll be making my anual trek to the Fred this Saturday. I'll be in the front of the line, sitting in my chair at 6AM. My twin bro Rob will come along with breakfast burritos and orange juice at 9am. It will be our 57th birthday, March 6, and maybe we will get our picture taken like the one on our 40th, in 1993. We posed in front of the big Great White Shark that United Anglers brought to raise money that year. That was one of the best uses of 10 bucks I have ever done, as I get to look at how young we and our kids were along time ago. I sure wish they would come fishing with me once in a while.

Still boatless...See Ya......Rich on TAXFREE
