San Clemente Island Fishing 3-2 with pics

We fished out at SCI today for rockfish. We left Newport at 0530 in calm seas until 10 miles out when white caps came up and spots of rain were outside of us. We kept on going in the capping seas and about 10 miles from the Island the ocean started to calm down. Wanting to fish the backside we kept going on and as we came around China Point the seas were glassy with just a small bump . Getting to our area we were to fish found us in very slow fishing conditions. We picked around for a couple of hours before we found a big spot of reds. The fishing was as good as it gets for rockfish. We were all using lite tackle and Lucanus jigs. The reds were averaging 5 to 8 lbs.,nice quality fish. Most of the time we never hit the bottom. The reds hit the jig on the drop with the 5 of us hooked up all at once most of the time. We finally had to drive away from them and headed towards home stopping on a couple other spots, scouting around a little bit. The ocean stayed nice and calm all day long, the sun came out and was nice and warm. It was great to get out there again, can`t wait to give it a try again. Water temp. was 61 and a clean blue.

Nice Reds Dave....gotta love the Luc....

I fish 'em on a Trevala TVC66M Butterfly rod with a Saltist 40H loaded with 65# spectra and 40# topshot sometimes,or not....
The soft tip works the Luc well & the reel & spectra get 'em up fast...

Can't wait 'till the wknd. after the Hall show....hope the weather is agreeable.Thanks for the report.
