SMB Halibut....06/03......

With the mixed up fish reports, both public & private and iffy weather,I left MDR with Juan not really knowing what to expect or do...
There were a few more trailers in the lot than normal as well as trailers full of equipment for next weeks Halibut derby. My friend Mike at the bait dock said a few nice ones were taken yesterday and we discussed some good areas,depths,etc......Wink

Still,I wanted to explore all options & watched were the various sporties,pre-tourney scouts & other boats went as I headed south almost to PV looking for signs of 'cuda, bass or 'butts......

Water was 63.5 and mossgreen in most areas, lots of flotsam/trash from confused wind/wave action...
1st stop was around Hermosa reef & Juan got a small sandie & this nice 5#'r on the plastic.....

The wind was already picking up & it was getting real tough to keep bottom on the leadheads.Threw out the sock to slow us down....

Juan gets bit again on his pink/Xmastree plastic and its a sand dab in 70ft of water.....?,really....?...on plastic...???...OFF the bottom...???

Made a little move north and we were doing drifts between 80 into 50ft using 6-8oz trap-rigged 'butt rigs with horse-sized 'dines from InSiene with no results.
All the while Juan keeps throwimg his little plastic........

In the middle of a drift Juan feels a little tug on his 17# P-line....

He pulls back.......

So does this...............

31lbs on my digital & taped out at 42-1/2in.......

On a pink leadhead swimbait....,OFF the bottom....,in 65ft.....Really

Think about it all you Derby guys....... Wink

'Till next time.......

Thanks for the report and the pics. I have just one question...

Pink leadhead...really? Looks like you have a tasty week of fish in front of you.

Catch'em, let'em go and catch'em again!

Man that must have been one sweet surprise when you saw color on that slab!WTG,by the way, more than once we've been in an area where we could catch nothing but sand dabs or sole on plastics every drop,70-90ft of water, after about 10 of em we'd leave.
Thanks for the report, hope to be out weds.

You know what, now that you say that, you're absolutely right. I've seen that on a twilight out of MDR years back. Those guys had a good night of catching. thinking about that makes me remember that was a fun night. I should jump on a twilight boat this season, its been too long since I've done that.

BTW I totally hear you about buying or fishing it. Wink

Hi rubble,

Nice Bass and Nice Halibut !! WTG Juan !! WTG rubble for puttin' him on the fish !! Gotta give private boat skippers lots of credit for hitting the targeted fish .... sometimes more than the lucky angler who caught the fish !!

re: SMB Halibut....06/03......

Appreciate all the kind words guys.....,

Juan was really happy & the best part is that even though I couldn't catch a COLD that day, puttin' him on one made my day......Shades

After fishing together so long...,we don't like to say ANYTHING when we're bringing in a good one 'cause we always seem to jinx ourselves & the fish comes unbuttoned.... surprise

When he called me over to gaff it my knees were shakin'knowing a bad gaff shot might lose it.Once on board, and after the mayhen of "calming down" the fish,we hi-fived & saw that I got 'em right in the guts..... Wink
