Favorite Cow Knot ?
I have been wondering what the best knot to use on a fall 10 day I have coming up (my first) and I hope you vets have some input. Palomar, Triple Palomar, SD Jam knot, cinch or improved cinch etc. What has been most sucessful on the bigger models ? Thanks for the advise, Glenn I have a crimp kit that I plan putting to use. I just wondered what some guys out there think is the stongest knot with heavy line. Hoping for Da-iry.

RE: Favorite Cow Knot ?
I would crimp the big stuff (over 100). Up to 100, I likethe Trilene or the inproved Trilene (Fleck Knot). Has a much lower profile than most of the others.
Start practicing now so you get proficient at what feels comfortable to you. I keep line in my desk and keep my wife amused by some of my activities. "What are you doing with that Bag Balm"

RE: Favorite Cow Knot ?
Whatever knot you choose, practice until you can tie it blindfolded, and then destructively test it for confidence. My favo splice (for 100+) is the two turn Seaguar, and my favo terminal knot is a single SDjam or spring/crimp - once again test to destruction. On the boat, always test your knots/crimps severely on the tackle station rings.

When fishing for cows, I crimp. If you have to tie a fast knot (or can't crimp for some reason), I would (and do) use a double San Diego.

RE: Favorite Cow Knot ?
I like the double uni. It does not cut on itself like other knots after a long fight. Does not slip. Easy to tie and usually stronger than the line. Placed 2nd on the knot contest at San Diego on this knot at the Izorline booth a couple of years ago.
But I am limited to two sucessful cows in my fishing history and used the double San Diego for those two.

Where knot size is not an issue: double SD Where knot size is an issue: trilene, three wraps up, two back down Crimping is as much a learned skill as knot tying! Practice, practice, practice.

I landed 6 fish of 170 to 295 last year on a 3 turn double uni. I dont like the trilene on the bigger line becasue of the way it twists/burns the line.

RE: Favorite Cow Knot ?
I second the "double UNI", or the "Erwin". The Erwin knot is a lot smaller than the SD knot. We were using the Erwin up to 200# mono on the Shogun last year during the big bites.

RE: Favorite Cow Knot ?
Miller knot went 10 for 10 at cowtown last year. 9 on 150# and one on unknown #. A guy asked me to retie for him after he busted one off...
