It looks like the fuel charges are something we will have to accept as the boats can't afford to run without them.I saw this on the Indy site which I think explains it well...

Hello fellow anglers, I would like to update the fuel surcharge info. The price's for the 2008 season were set about 9 months ago when fuel was about $2.80 a gallon, The trip price was based at $3.00 per gallon at the time. As of may 26th we are paying about $4.50 incl. sales tax per gallon and the fuel contuines to rise weekly as we can all see at the pumps. The indy burns on average 600 gallons per day based on this ratio The surcharge is $5.00 per person per day for every .25 cents. We hope there is an end in sight to the fuel sky rocketing but we cannot say for sure what the cost of the fuel surcharge will at the time of your trip. Please feel free to call the office for the latest price per day but know it has changed every week on us. Thank You for your support in this time of crisis, Owners/Operators Mark Pisano and Paul Strasser.

At 4.50 to 5 bucks a gallon it explains the charge..

Not trying to be a smart arse, but call your boat. With the prices of fuel, we can't expect the owners taking the blunt of the pain for us to enjoy our sport. Going on a 8 day in few weeks an was told between 20/25 a day plus the normal fee for permits.

2150.00 trip
200.00 fuel surcharge
85.00 permits
350.00 tip
50.00 JP
60.00 galley
50.00 parking
100.00 hotel
100.00 wine & booze for trip
25.00 snacks to bring on board
100.00 dinner & breakfest day before trip in SD
200.00 misc. un-necessary stuff (fluoro etc etc)
300.00 fish processing
100.00 gas to an from

total 3870.00, can round it out to about $4000.00

EXPERIEMCE? PRICELESS

I like the Indy's honest approach here. They stated what fuel was when they made the schedule. I'm sure if you wanted to, you could research that and find it's true.
Then they said what they average burning a day. That could be researched and checked out as well.
Finally, they say what they are going to charge for each dollar amount per gallon.
I think that's about as clear cut as can be.
If you want to complain about it, I think you need to complain at a higher level. Not at the boat owners, not at the fuel dock.
We all put gas or diesel in our cars, right? We know what the score is.

Like David said, complain to higher ups. We all know our limits an what we can spend an how to spend it with commen sense. If you think its high now, wait till it gets over 6 an close to 7 a gallon.

"Oh my God--What did they get?" The trip receits?" THE TRIP RECEIPTS?"

"WORSE--THEY GOT THE FUEL SURCHARGE!"

Many San Diego boats traveling to Ensenada during off days to fuel up for 1/2 the price. So is the fuel surcharge is a scam or reality - Ghostboy!
I do not fish long range, but some of my buddies do, and they were all talking about how the boats switched and were buying fuel in Ensenada for $2.+ a gallon...
I saw a couple of them today, and they were discussing this very subject.

How do the boats make a 18 hour trip (6 hrs down..6 hours back and 6 hours to take fuel on) when they only have 5 hours of turn around time..?? It's reality......

Yes, the Excel did that exact thing for us on our Joann Mikkelsen 17 day trip, and that helped us only suffer a $10 a day fuel surcharge, versus what surely would have been a $25 or $30 a day fuel surcharge.
Now, the reality of it is they cannot do those Ensenada fuel runs on days when they have turn around trips.
So, Ghostboy is still hitting the pipe!
