An Obsevers Veiw WCBRT Cabo 2008....

It was a great experience to be a part of a tournament and a group of people that cared so much about the health of the Cabo San Lucas Billfish fishery.... The quality of the teams/crews was outstanding, I stood silently watching the best billfish guys and girls show how it's done Cabo Style.... No dragging lure patterns for hours behind the boat in a barren sea, NO....run and gun, sight fishing all day....incredible.. With 2 observers per boat I was able to focus on using my camera and capturing some of the great action taking place each day... And they were long days too, up at 4:45am and on the water till 6:30pm...... Observers from Australia, Florida, California and New York... Over 200 marlin released to fight another day... ACer's Casey and Todd on the Bull Rider....
Team Caliente...
Chris on the Reelaxe with film crew...
Sunrise...

Come on Neill, I know you took more.........I still need to down load mine that I took with the Brazilian Team on Yahoo and the Texas team on Crazy Horse. I did this tournament last year and had a great time also. The weather crapped out on Wednesday.

Great Pics Neil.....

Looks like you guys had a great time down there. With two observers for each boat, I'm sure you had some time to pic up some great tips with rigging, leadering and more (in addition to shooting some cool pics). Sounds like a great experiance...

Cheers, Bill

Dan- be careful of the pics from Yahoo- this is a family site..! Great pics Neil, I barely remember that one of me being taken....
Uh.....sure, family site! No Speedo shots, but I did get a few of the Bass Pro Shops coffee grinders mounted on conventional Penn 270C rods. Classic set up for drop back rigs for marlin! They actually did hook and release a marlin on that rig (but DQ'd).

I was sitting having a beer with the Aussie observers discussing fishing as usual when we got slightly distracted.....

But back to the fishing....:)

I cannot believe how long these baits survive....

The marlin is out of focus but look, it was throwing up squid.....

This was part of the reason the fish were "picky" throughtout the tournament, they were gorging themselves during night feedings....

Great pictures Neill, I didn't see that particular "distraction" though. We had a great time down there, although our free fishing day was a bit like "Victory at Sea", tough fishing in that stuff.

Dave,

I had a lot of fun down there, good to met your brother John too...

They say it was blowing 40 knots, and having 6-8ft swells at 3 seconds did not help...

I tried to get pics that showed the weather but it was hard, that was probably the roughest conditions I've ever been in...

That is Reelaxe in the trough and she was a big boat...

Rob,

Dave, John, Bill and I fished the observer tournament on the "Protocol", a 33' Rampage...great boat, crew and captain...

They were taking water over the flybridge on every wave for hours....

Neill, Sorry to jump ship on you guys on Protocol, but when Ez Duz It opened up, I knew the bigger ride would come in handy when the seas came up! The 4th photo is one of the Bass Pro Shops spinning set up used by one of the teams I drew, I won't say which team, but they were from Brazil...........they actually hooked a marlin on it.

Neil,

I had a great time as well! It was nice to meet you and all of the other observers. My brother Mark told me I would have a great time and he was right on!

I really learned a lot about marlin fishing from the Get Over It team. Had a fun time with the Santana and Pura Vida teams as well. The Pura Vida team was from Austin Texas and they knew how to have fun even though they didn't catch a marlin the day I was with them! They had the best spread of food I have ever seen on a charter.

I was on Dave's new Cabo 47 for the observer's tournament and I wished I was on a larger boat. I've seen worse conditions in Alaska but not much worse.
