Looking to replace my two batteries in the boat.

1. When people say group 27, 32 whatever, what does group refer to?

2. The area where my batteries are located allows me another 16-18 inches. In other words my batteries can be 8-9 inches wider each. I currently have 2 Trojan Dual purpose 27s

3. Who makes the best battery?

4. My batteries are both 3 years old.

Any suggestions. I don't mind spending $$$ for good stuff that lasts.

For a backup or main lighting system use a deep cycle marine(neptune) and the other would be the starting battery. You might try one of the NEW HD gell cells with a higher amp hour rating. Construction varys alot between brands so shop around to get the best deal. Weight is the key issue. The better the battery the more it weighs but construction will affect performance. How large is your boat?
