Big bull Dorado caught by Ventura angler...while fishing in Cabo this week

The boys at the dock said this is about as big as they get, and I should send to IGFA. My first Dorado, for you Dorado experts out there, is this as big as they tell me it was? It was just under 5 feet long - 58.5" didn't weigh it, we ate it.

If so, anyone know any good taxidermy in SoCal that does replicas?
Thanks,
Jason

Yes, dorado have been caught in Ventura waters during El Nino years. During the 1997 El Nino we caught and speared dorado off of my boat on several occasions within three miles of Santa Cruz Island. That same year I caught Yellowfin tuna at Footprint reef, and have pictures of speared dorado with Anacapa Arch a mile behind us.

That's a real nice dorado. I don't guess weights well but I'd guess over 40 lbs. That's a good one!

But they do get bigger. 210 CM (over 82 inches) is the max. 40kg max weight.

Still, I see very few much larger than that brought into Loreto. Maybe because you guys down at Cabo get them before they get up here. :)

I was down in Cabo this past week at the WCBRT and saw many Dorado like this. The guess was around 40lb.s average.
Giant by our standards here in So. Cal. but they seemed to be abundant down there.
All that said, it's a great catch and certainly worthy of a mount!
Congratulations on a great catch!
Best,
John

Thanks for the info guys. I have been doing some research online. The world record Dorado is 87 pounds, caught in 1976 by a guy in Costa Rica. There are some reports of an 88 pound record in panama, but IGFA doesn't list that one. Last year in Cabo this Dorado

was supposed to break the world record at 90 pounds, the IGFA has since dismissed the claim because the scale was inaccurate...they think it was less than 90 pounds. It's length was 68 inches.

It this fish was 68 inches and close to 90 pounds. I'd say my 58.5" Dorado was over 40 pounds. My captains guess was 55 pounds. Others on the dock had it over 60 pounds.

Given that my new issue of Saltwater magazine has a Dolphin feature and the guide that has fished Dolphin for years has never caught a fish bigger than 54 inches, I think it's definitely worth a mount.

Just having fun with the title, you guys need to go Cabo and drink some tequila and lighten up! Anyone ever get a mount with this company that advertises in saltwater magazine, global fish mounts?
Cheers,
Jason

Thats a great fish. We used to catch many around that size in the 80s and 90s at San Jose Del Cabo before it grew up and became such a popular place. You could see the big Marlin Jumping but we couldn't bribe the panga skipper into going after them. I would just say lets troll for the Dorado and i'd use my Cona Clones. The Dorado ate them like candy.

Yes its a nice fish, but it would not be anything of record. Looks like 30-35. Like John said, we saw lots of bulls come on the boats down in Cabo last week.

Take a 60 lb barbell...coat your hand in oil and then do a military press overhead with one arm and move your arm 30 degrees away from your body. You'll find just how heavy 60 lbs real quick regardless of your strength. You can't hold a 60lbs fish like pic #1 overhead...just my opine. Beautiful fish nevertheless and great pictures. Thank you for sharing.
