The Dalton Boys will be heading over to the island this Saturday afternoon. We are contemplating getting a mooring in Avalon. Does anyone know the probability of getting one on Saturday. I would think in the middle of Winter we should be able to procure one, but to be honest I have no idea. Our plan is to head over and do some fishing before sunset and after that we are going to try to make squid, that is if we are unable to get some from the bait barge (Nacho). Does anyone have any info and where we can make squid? In addition, we're going to take over some hoop nets, but I have to admit we are clueless as to where to place them. We would like to load up on some mackeral or bonito for bait anyone have a good tip on where they can be found. If we had more time on Saturday, I'm sure I could find them, but unfortunately our time is limited because of baseball practices. Any help and information would be greatly appreciated. If we can get a mooring in Avalon, we might abandon everything and spend the evening in Avalon. If anyone is heading over you should be able to reach us on Channel 68/70. Thanks again for your input.

A mooring will be no problemo this time of the year. Squid are all over the place right now, however word has it that they are thickest on the back side near the vees. Lobster like rocky areas near kelp forest. Drop your nets on the outside of a kelp line and let them soak for 30-50 minutes. Most of my bugs come from 30-60 feet of water.
Hope this helps. BIG TENTACLES OUT !!!
As BT said, mooring should be available. Find light boats around the island and you will find squid (you can't miss the light boats as you can see them for miles at night). Bring some squid jigs and snag'em up in case they won't float for you. Good luck.
the squid charged the boat at long point for me and macs were thick at Italin gardens good luck

Thanks to all those who responded and a special thanks to Blackfish. I think I've got all the info necessary to get the job done. Thanks again and I'll post a report next week. Take care and have a good weekend.
