Christmas Yak

2666 Views 21 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  bassnet
i'm sure this is the wrong board, but what can i say, i'm VERY excited about this.

anyway, my girlfriend hooked me up with this for christmas:

ocean kayak drifter. it was a rental kayak from last season, and it came with one flush mounted rod holder already on it, and she had two more added to it. then my parents hooked me up with a bait tank and pump for it for christmas as well. so needless to say, life is GOOD right now.

however, being new to this whole tupperwear fishing thing, i need some help.

1. what should i use for a battery for the bait pump (hoping to, in a couple of years, add a depth finder and a gps to it)?
2. where can i find one in ora county (a battery that is)?
3. what should i expect to pay for it?

thanks in advance.

Very Nice Glen,

I hope you put her to good use and bring some table fare home that great girlfriend of yours.

Cheers, Bill

Merry Christmas Glendon, that's a nice kayak! :7

John.
Very cool.

Guys are using AGM batteries for their yaks since they charge well and don't have to be upright to work.

If you want some ideas on how to rig it your welcome to drop by the shop.

Jim
Merry Christmas Glendon.
Nice Christmas present.
Good luck in the new year with your new toy!

I tried the Yak thing once.(rented)
It was a fun day, with a few learning curves.
There is a Kayak tournament every year out of Dana.
You can really get some great ideas from the Yaks in this event.
I think it was in June.
Definately worth checking out!
I really enjoyed myself, and will probably do it again this year.
Actualy That tourney is in March Unsure of the exact date right now. But it is an event that has a very heavy turnout the first two years it has happened. Hope the third year continues the tradition.
Nice yak! I picked up a 12V 7.5 amp battery for 20$ and a charger for 10$ at a hobby store http://www.hobbypeople.net/ in Fountain Valley-
You're gonna love fishing from the Tupperware, it rules!
I'm jealous...all I got for Christmas was a velcro mullet and a Motorhead CD.
RE: Dana Kayak Annual Tournament

It's Saturday March 11th. 2006.
Here is the link.

I don't know Glendon - hard to picture you out on the water without at least a 200 hp on your tail! His and her yaks - sounds like fun.
That looks very sweet. Looking forward to reports of you killin' the YT's and WSB's with rig. Have fun.

By the way...don't let that girl go. That's an incredibly thoughtful gift.

she's been eating VERY well since we moved back down from oregon this summer. lobster, dorado, yellowtail, halibut, fish tacos, ect.... hopefully i'll be able to get into some LA Harbor butts in my yak and go from there. thanks for the response.

merry christmas to you too jimbo. i bet you and your wife had a blast watching your grandson open gifts on christmas morning?

thanks for the info on the tourney. i'll have to check that out. i rented last summer, and had been on kayaks a few times before that, but i've never fished from one. hoping to change that VERY soon. i got my girlfriend one as well, and although she won't be fishing from hers, it'll be a GREAT way for she and i to spend some time together outdoors.

thanks for the info bassnet, i appreciate it. i've heared that a 6V is better for running bait pumps though. and 12V are better for electronics. any thoughts on that?

who said it doesn't have a 200hp on the back of it? ;) it will definitely be different, but it'll be quiet and a LOT of fun to fish from. and CHEAP. free launch, make my own bait, no gas expense. should be a lot of fun. and i can fish LA Harbor with it very easily launching from seal beach. :)

and yeah, the his and hers part is AWESOME!!!!! we both LOVE kayaking and it'll be GREAT to be able to go for as long as we want not having to worry about getting back because of the rental fees. i can't wait.

merry christmas to you and marjie.

thanks aloharob. i'm not too sure about yellowtail and whiteseabass right now, but i'm hoping to get into some halibut this year in LA Harbor with it. i'll probably just start off fishing in huntingon harbor or newport harbor to get use to fishing on a kayak as i've never done it before. but i'll be posting all my reports. can't wait.

Not sure, I made some bait tubes out of PVC that hold 4 or 5 macs each and offer little to no resistence while paddling- I put the whole bait tank thing on the back burner while I test out the tubes, so far, so good- The graph works great on the little 12V-
I'm looking into a 12V submersable squid light, not sure how that will work out on the little battery- but I'll find out!

Glendon, found some sick halibut holes in OC, maybe we can hook up and do the yak thing for the flat white meat!
