I just wanted to add my "Me Too" to all the people saying what a great post this is. I'm going to be trying to do some surf fishing up in the puget sound area this summer and your post really changed my mind on what kind of tackle I was after. I'm from the Right coast (North Carolina) and "surf fishing" to me means a 10' rod heaving 5 oz pyramid sinkers 100 yards or so. Well that was many years ago. Time for a new game plan. Thanks for the well thought out and presented advice.

I fished Bodega Bay on 7-4 for a couple of hours. I sprained my knee a few days earlier so I elected to cast a hunk of squid out as far as I could. Sitting in a lawn chair driking Corona's was about as ambitious as I could get. Any way in the first 45 minutes I caught a smelt, a small sand shark, and a 26" striped bass. I am totally hooked on surf fishing and ca't wait to try your techniques, when I can hike around a little better.

hey guys how are you supposed to catch those stupid little sand crabs i can't ever catch them in very decent numbers or size-- do you use some sort of net i watched a guy use up in nor cal once on gold beach and catch hundreds of 3/4inch long sand crabs at a time or dig a hole reeeeeally deep so it is sort of a trap or what?

Very good advice for any one starting to surf fish. C2 I fish the surf on the Gulf of Mexico and many of the techniques work here also. I fish with a 12 foot spinning rod wrapped on a crappie pole blank with 6# test line. I have caught some big fish on it. I mainly fish with artificial lures but will tip a jig with a piece of fresh shrimp. I make my own. If I do fish with bait, I will use a fishfinder or a two dropper high/low rig. I mainly fish for Pompano and whiting but will really take what comes along. An added bonus to surf fishing is rod building and tackle making. It's frosting on the cake! I do have and use heavier rigs for the 'biggies', but it's fun to 'run and gun' with the long light outfit.C2

Great info. I use to surf fish a lot in Galveston Texas when I was a teenager. My brother and I would go down to the beach with our expensive rod & reels and throw Johnson gold or silver spoons. We caught our share of speckled trout and reds over those years. We have some great memories and funny stories. Love the great advice & info.
