Well after Jeff's crazy post yesterday I went out in my local water this morning to get in on some of this wide open perch fishing. I didn't find it quite as wide open, but did manage about 15 perch over 2 1/2 hours, all pretty much in one spot using sandcrab flies. They just wouldn't hit anything else.

That's a really good session for me. Here is the jackpot fish today, a healthy 12-incher that got on the reel and pulled out drag.

See you all out there tomorrow.

Would you happen to have a picture of a sand crab fly? I'm just curious with the different saltwater flies you use, but if you are concerned others will copy yours, I'll understand if you don't want to show it.

I think salt water shore fly fishing is cool and would like to get into it myself.

These were all store bought. Here they are, in my hat. The one in the upper left was by far the best producer. I buy these from His and Hers Fly Shop in Costa Mesa (no affiliation). ...although the slab took the one in the upper right, which I bought at Bob Marriot's Flyfishing in Tustin.

Nice report and thanks for the picks. It is nice to see what others use in the surf. In addition to clousers and sandcrab fly patterns I like to fish gummies. When the dredge pipe was in place I landed some nice YFC and a few fish that were beyond my abilities escaped 8* Tight lines, Steve

Way to go with the long wand. That's a nice perch.

His and Hers is a great shop. (also no affiliation) They are well versed in local saltwater feather flinging. They used to organize float tube fishing trips in Newport Harbor. I recall drifting with the tide and a chase boat for safety...much like floating a river in a drift boat. Good times.
